Two teens held for having gun

GEORGE TOWN: Two teenagers who may have been involved in several armed robberies in the state were arrested at a cyber cafe with a semi-automatic pistol and five rounds of ammunition in Bandar Baru Air Itam. The duo, aged 17 and 18, were spotted acting in a suspicious manner by a police team led by ASP Mohd Syukry Mohd Ali that entered the premises.

George Town OCPD Asst Comm Gan Kong Meng said the teenagers tried to flee and put up a struggle but they were overpowered during the 4am incident on Monday. “The team had earlier laid an ambush after seeing one of them in the premises. They only moved in when the other accomplice turned up a short while later.

“The suspects, who are school dropouts, have since been remanded until Sunday pending investigations. One of them is unemployed while the other is an odd-job worker,” he said. Police are now trying to establish links between the teenaged suspects and 15 armed robberies reported in the area. The firearm has also been sent for ballistic tests.

Sources said that police were also trying to ascertain if the firearm was smuggled here from a neighbouring country. The case is being investigated under Section 8 of the Firearms (Increased Penalties) Act 1971.
