Foreign workers are treated fairly and well, replies Taiwan

TAIWAN'S foreign workers are well-protected by law ('Taiwan's labour pains'; Monday). They are treated equally before the law and entitled to the same protection as Taiwanese workers.
Foreign workers are protected by Taiwan's labour benchmarks, such as minimum standards for working conditions, workers' rights and interests, employee-employer relationships and social and economic development, insurance, welfare and occupational accident protection - all of which are no different from the protections accorded to Taiwanese workers.
Taiwan has enacted laws to safeguard the welfare and interests of workers regardless of their nationality, such as the Labour Standards Act which mandates that every worker is entitled to a minimum wage of NT$17,280 (S$725).
Our Privacy Protection Act is aimed at protecting individual privacy and dignity.
Problems related to foreign workers are isolated and were resolved swiftly when they happened. We recognise the valuable contributions made by foreign workers to Taiwan's economic development and will continue to treat them with kindness, compassion and fairness. We respect their culture and dignity.
Taiwan is committed to safeguarding the welfare of foreign workers and while there have been cases of maltreatment, all reported allegations of irregularities will be thoroughly investigated and those caught violating the law will be penalised.
We are confident that through government efforts, educating employers and helping foreign workers to integrate with Taiwanese society, and providing better support and services, we can solve the problems they face in the future and reduce cases of maltreatment.
