India to buy 300 fifth-generation fighters

New Delhi, October 08, 2010

Agreement in place for joint development and production of aircraft.

India's Defence Minister A K Antony on Thursday declared India would buy 300 co-produced fifth-generation fighters (FGPA) --- equivalent to the US Air Force's F-22 'Raptor' --- from Russia in an unparalleled military joint venture.

The air force hopes to induct the FGFA, making a massive quantum leap in air power for the Indian Air Force.

India is expected to fork out an estimated $30 billion towards inducting 300 fifth-generation fighters.

"All issues pertaining to the FGFA programme have been discussed and resolved with Russia. The agreement is in its final stages and only some technical formalities need to be completed," Antony said after meeting his Russian counterpart A E Serdyukov.

The two countries also agreed to modalities for the joint design, development and production of the FGFA at the 10th meeting of the India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Military Technical Cooperation.

The 30-tonne FGFA will be a swing-role fighter with extensive stealth features to increase survivability in combat, advanced avionics, smart weapons, top-end mission computers and 360-degree situational awareness.

Air force chief Air Chief Marshal P V Naik said the fighter aircraft would have supercruise ability, allowing it to fly at supersonic speeds for extended periods without kicking in fuel-guzzling afterburners.

The FGFA will be based on the Russian Sukhoi T-50 PAK-FA design.

And they will forget to include a maintenance package, resulting in having 300 planes which cannot be serviced. Then blame it on corruption and incompetent politicians.

Indian goverment are really don't know how to manage the country only try to siphon money. Country so poor still want to buy 300 plane at US$100m/pcs. That have to add in maintenace cost, pilot, fuel, airbase............. will tripple the amount to maintaining the fleet for next 20 year. That would be about US$100b for total cost in 20 year.
They should have use the money to improve basic need eg. water, electricity and cheap housing maybe 3 room in Indian cost only SG$12k~$25k except central city.
The money can bulit 3million home for US$30b budget.

Indian really can talk. Without any solid data.
Even US said that they manage to land man on Moon. Many don't believe because of the conspiracy. All the photo after carefully check have a lot loop hole. And a lot of data missing.
Landing man on moon is easy but bring back alive very complicated. US just try to con everyone. Very soon our history book need to rewrite again. Maybe China will the 1st bring back man a live from moon. Or Indian maybe they will proof it.

The Indian claimed that they were on the moon spiritually, when ancient guru meditate the soul leave the body and they float to the moon...no space suit needed.

This is not a stealth aircraft, except maybe in the frontal aspect. many features of a modern VLO aircraft like the F-22 or F-35 are missing. At best, this is equivalent to a F-18E/F SUper Hornet.

I thought they were buying F16 from USA? Did Pakistan object to sale?

Russian warplanes are great but much of it depends on reliability and maintenence. Russians do not have a strong industrial complex so what is good on paper may have issues in execution.

Malaysia bought a bunch of Russian planes and had issues with maintainence

Also what happened to the indigenous Indian warplane?

The LCA and these Sukhois are 2 different airplanes. With the LCA, the Indians are trying to produce a modern Ajeet, i.e. a small jet with limited capabilities, but cheap to build and operate. These Sukhoi Pak 50s are much more advanced and a more offensive weapon. Current Indian equipment is way behind China and even Pakistan. They need to do something about it. The LCA is probably 15 years behind schedule, it was meant to have replaced their Mig-21s long ago. But they are definitely going ahead with it. They want a hi-lo mix of aircraft in their inventory, like we have in the RSAF.

The maintenance issue is a different matter. I guess it depends on the age of the aircraft, and the type of aircraft. The indians per se don't have bad maintenance, and if they are building the plane in India at HAL with Russian help, they should not have any problems with spare parts either. You never hear of accidents from the Indian Fleet of Mirage 2000, but than you hear of Mig-21s dropping like flies. But the Migs are much older than the Mirage, and depending on the quality of the flight crew and the maintenance crew, its possible that the more expensive planes get the better pilot and ground crews, and the Mig squadrons are manned by lesser ability personnel. The combination of less qualified personnel and older planes is a recipe for accidents.

No accidents maybe the Indian pilots never learnt to fly the planes!
