Residents repair their damaged shanty houses along the coastal road in Paranaque suburban Manila, on July 14, after Typhoon Conson hit the country's capital late on July 13.

Three Philippine fishermen survived on a diet of seaweed and raw fish while adrift at sea for six days after a typhoon damaged their boat, the coast guard said Friday.

Fellow fishermen rescued the three men six days after huge waves stirred up by Typhoon Conson disabled and partially submerged their vessel, a coast guard statement said.

"The three fishermen stayed on board (the damaged boat) and for them to survive, they ate floating sea grass" as well as uncooked fish, it added. They were later taken to a hospital near Infanta on Luzon island's Pacific coast.

Conson killed at least 79 people when it hit the Philippines on July 13. The coast guard is still looking for 74 other people, most of them fishermen missing at sea.
