SINGAPORE: Singapore's manufacturing output rose for a sixth straight month, rising 58.6 per cent on-year in May.
That's higher than the 51 per cent increase recorded in April.
Releasing the data on Friday, Singapore's Economic Development Board says excluding the biomedical cluster, manufacturing output grew 30.6 per cent.
The headline number beat analyst expectations for an increase of 32.1 per cent on-year.
Figures from the EDB showed that output grew across all segments.
Output in biomedical manufacturing grew 117 per cent, largely driven by the pharmaceutical segment which expanded by 121.8 per cent in May.
Electronics output climbed 51.8 per cent, with all the segments within the cluster recording better performance on the back of strong export demand and a low production base last year.
EDB says precision engineering saw a rise of 40.5 per cent on year on the back of strong demand for semiconductor related equipment and industrial refrigerating and air-conditioning parts.
Meanwhile, the chemicals cluster grew 19.6 per cent due to a 50.8 per cent gain in petrochemicals.
General manufacturing rose 18.5 percent on-year in May, while transport engineering segment returned to growth after a decline last month, rising 0.3 percent in May.
This came as the land transport segment expanded 84.4 per cent with higher production of parts and accessories for vehicles.
On a seasonally adjusted month-on-month basis, Singapore's manufacturing output increased 5.2 per cent in May versus the 24 per cent gain recorded in April. - CNA/jy
