SINGAPORE: Flash floods caused by heavy rain on Wednesday morning left a trail of damage and disruption in parts of Singapore.

In just three hours, between 8am and 11am, 100 millimetres of rainfall were recorded.

That's 60 per cent of the average rainful for June.

Hardest hit were the downtown areas as businesses came to a halt, people scrambled for a way out, and the authorities swung into damage control.

Like at Liat Towers, nothing was spared.

The impact on businesses was obvious. At Lucky Plaza, retailers, particularly those at the basement, are picking up the pieces.

Some roads were impassable as cars and buses sit helplessly in the flood waters.

Some passengers stuck in buses and vehicles and had to be brought to safety by civil defence officers.

Such scenes of damage and disruption were repeated across town and in other parts of Singapore.

Yap Kheng Guan, 3P Network Director, PUB, said: "In 1984, when we expanded the Stamford Canal, it served us this area and served us very well. So we have to really get down to this root of today's flooding."

By noon, the waters had subsided.

But the PUB has advised the public to be careful as flash floods may happen again if there is heavy rain.

A flight of stairs can prevent rainwater from overflowing into MRT stations underground.

PUB said such anti-flooding features are being built into MRT stations based on the highest flooding level ever recorded in the past 20 to 30 years. - CNA/vm

News article is flawed. Who cares if it is 60% of June's rainfall. Number 1 June is lowest month of rainfall and your drainage infrastructure is there for whole year.

December rainfall is 300mm. So 100mm is only 1/3 of Dec rainfall.

So don't blame weather lah. Instead try and see how to improve drainage.

Hit the nail on the head already?! Billion dollar world class drainage with some 3rd world Ah Beng maintenance?! Which minister must resign for this? Culvert choked? Choked with what? Choked of CORRUPTION or INCOMPETENCE or both?

Ministers are demigods. They must not be made to look like fools. Get some minion CEO to go out there and tell some story. This is to test the market. If crowd dont like it, at least Minister still gets second chance to correct or exculpate himself. Cannot use up the silver bullets. Maybe even 3rd chance, if he gets the MoS out there as second line of defence.

That is the way to play the high stakes game. Cannot convince, confuse; cannot lie, fudge. Or just blame some fall guy.

i dun see that in say, Japan, or USA etc. something goes wrong there. ie the top man would come out and apologise. most recent case, BP incident, Obama the top man in USA came out and said, it's his matter.

what's happening here? why ain't no top man coming/stepping up?
