POLICE have arrested a 34-year-old male Indian national in connection with the murder of a Filipino woman who was found stabbed in a rented room at a Bencoolen Street lodging house on Monday. Police, working tirelessly round the clock over the last three days, tracked down the suspect and nabbed him at about 4 pm in the vicinity of Kitchener Road in Little India. He will be charged in court on Friday with murder, which carries the death penalty, if convicted. The Filipina, identified as 30-year-old Roselyn Reyes Pascua, was stabbed several times in the chest. The caretaker of the building found her at about 3am in a black top and panties, lying face up on the floor of her unlocked rented room.

DNA of the Indian national accused of murdering Roselyn Reyes Pascua was found on nine items in the room the Filipino woman was stabbed to death in March last year.

Testifying on Wednesday, forensic scientist Kee Koh Kheng said that among other objects, the DNA of Bijukumar Remadevi Nair Gopinathan was found was on a 'pink lacy brassiere', on a pair of denim hot pants and the inside of a brown wallet found between the headboard of the bed and the wall.

His blood was also found on a sanitary pad left on the dressing table.

When cross-examined by defence counsel Shashi Nathan, Ms Kee of the Health Sciences Authority said that the DNA of four unknown men had also been detected in two used condoms and among eight pieces of tissue paper found in the room.

Punched, stabbed, and left to die
    Lianhe Wanbao

A murder trial today revealed that a prostitute died after a brutal knifing.

The deceased is Filipino woman Roselyn Reyes Pascua (aged 30), who was found lying in a pool of blood at Peony Mansion in Bencoolen Street, in the wee hours of 15 March last year.

Working as a prostitute, the Filipina was stabbed 16 times altogether, including 10 times in her chest and abdomen, once in her neck, and twice in her vagina.

She died only after 30 minutes as a stab wound to her heart drained the blood from her.

The woman was unable to cry out for help in her last moments due to a very serious neck wound.

Bruising to her face and cuts on her lips also indicate that she was punched repeatedly in the face.

The suspect currently on trial for her murder is Indian national Bijukumar Remadevi Nair Gopinathan.

The suspect does not deny carrying out the brutal attack but claims it happened after a fight with the deceased, as well as grave and serious provocation.

Forensics however, found no defensive wounds or marks on the deceased's arms and legs to indicate a fight before she died.

In addition, the murder weapon used in the attack has yet to be found.

If found guilty of murder, the suspect faces the gallows.

Indian national Bijukumar Remadevi Nair Gopinathan, 36, was convicted of the murder of Filipina Roselyn Reyes Pascua and given the mandatory death penalty on Wednesday.

Justice Choo Han Teck said that the prosecution had proved its case against Gopinathan beyond a reasonable doubt.

Ms Pascua was found in her room at Peony Mansion, Bencoolen Street on March 15, 2010.

She was stabbed multiple times in the chest, abdomen, neck and in her genital area, but the fatal injury was a stab that went through her ribs and into her heart.

Gopinathan did not deny stabbing Ms Pascua, who he said had solicited him for sex, but contended that he had acted under grave and sudden provocation.

The appeal of an Indian national against his conviction for murdering a Filipina was dismissed on Thursday - but Bijukumar Remadevi Nair Gopinathan still has a chance of escaping the hangman's noose.

The Court of Appeal upheld only his conviction under Section 300(c) of the Penal Code, for homicide that is carried out with the intention of causing bodily injury which would ordinarily be sufficient to cause death.

If proposed changes to give judges discretion in murder sentencing are passed in Parliament, the 36-year-old may escape the death sentence.

In April, Bijukumar, a shipyard worker, was convicted of murdering Ms Roselyn Reyes Pascua, 30, in March 2010. Her body was found in her rented room at Peony Mansion in Bencoolen Street with multiple stab wounds.
