Red-shirt protesters, at least 100,000 strong, occupied Rajdamnoen Avenue Saturday and more kept flowing into the capital from all over the Kingdom Saturday night.

<!-- Google Dtail Ads --> Arrivals quickly set up temporary shelters and cooked dinners in anticipation of a final bid to oust the Abhisit Vejjajiva administration and the old bureaucratic elite.
Makeshift toilets were being installed by the red shirts to supplement those provided by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, and many food stalls quickly sprang up.
As night fell some traded stories, while others went to listen to the main stage's speakers on Phan Fah Bridge, which became a sea of red shirts.
"The line of cars was really long," said one female red shirt to a male fellow protester. "Two hundred cars alone left Uttaradit," the man added.
Both ends of the lengthy rally site along Rajdamnoen Avenue - Sanam Luang and the Royal Plaza - soon became crowded car parks. At Sanam Luang, a stage was set up by little-known red-shirt members for them to take turns going up to attack the government.
"We can't lose this time. But if we lose, we can expect to stand as equals. The media and academics look down on us, but people with a Grade-4 education have brains too," said an on-stage voice.
Although the atmosphere was relaxed and full of buzz, some red shirts were feeling distrustful of the authorities and were worried that dirty tactics could be employed by the government to make it look like the red shirts had started violence during the night.
"We must keep vigilant tonight. They know more red shirts will arrive tomorrow and maybe they want to stop us tonight and create a situation to justify a clampdown," said one female red shirt from Bangkok, who asked not to be identified.
For the same reason, many red shirts decided not to park their vehicles at designated areas provided by the government for fear that weapons or bombs may be planted and the blame placed on them.
A 7-Eleven convenience store on Rajdamnoen, fearing drink-fuelled violence, put up signs stating it was not selling alcohol for the time being.
A staff member at the store said the ban would last until the protests were over, but confessed he did not quite know how to explain the situation to foreign tourists, who would also be denied beer and whisky.

<!-- end heading-panel --> Supporters of ousted premier Thaksin Shinawatra have reached the capital and gathered at Phan Fa bridge on Saturday night ahead of Sunday's anti-government rally.
122429.jpg

Police said early in the evening an estimated 12,000 protesters had already arrived at the bridge, which is their meeting point.
"The official number at the bridge now is 12,000, but 50,000 protesters and about 7,000 vehicles have gone through the checkpoints," police spokesman Maj Gen Prawut Thavornsiri said.

Red-shirts from all regions in the country began their journey to the capital on Friday Thousands of vehicles from the North and Northeast flowed toward Bangkok through Ayutthaya province on Saturday morning, causing heavy <leo_highlight style="border-bottom: 2px solid rgb(255, 255, 150); background: transparent none repeat scroll 0% 50%; cursor: pointer; display: inline; -moz-background-clip: -moz-initial; -moz-background-origin: -moz-initial; -moz-background-inline-policy: -moz-initial;" id="leoHighlights_Underline_0" onclick="leoHighlightsHandleClick('leoHighlights_Underline_0')" onmouseover="leoHighlightsHandleMouseOver('leoHighlights_Underline_0')" onmouseout="leoHighlightsHandleMouseOut('leoHighlights_Underline_0')" leohighlights_keywords="traffic" leohighlights_url_top="http%3A//shortcuts.thebrowserhighlighter.com/leonardo/plugin/highlights/3_1/tbh_highlightsTop.jsp?keywords%3Dtraffic%26domain%3Dwww.bangkokpost.com" leohighlights_url_bottom="http%3A//shortcuts.thebrowserhighlighter.com/leonardo/plugin/highlights/3_1/tbh_highlightsBottom.jsp?keywords%3Dtraffic%26domain%3Dwww.bangkokpost.com" leohighlights_underline="true">traffic</leo_highlight> congestion along the way.
122430.jpg

The influx prompted authorities to declare a security red alert, the highest level, in Bangkok late Bangkok afternoon.

National Security Council secretary-general Thawil Pliansri said he believed up to 100,000 protesters would join the rally due to begin on noon at Sunday.

UDD leader Jatuporn Promphan declared on a stage set up at Phan Fa bridge that the protesters would move to an important location 20km away if Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva refuses to dissolve the parliament soon.

Mr Jatuporn, an opposition Puea Thai Party MP, said the UDD will officially demand the government to dissolve parliament and will also unveil the new protest location on Sunday.
122431.jpg

"I believe we [the red-shirts] will triumph within four days.
"But if the government still clings on we will protest even more and the parliament will be dissolved within a week," Mr Jatuporn said.

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva earlier rejected the group's demands to step down.

"We should not be complacent because there are some groups of people still wanting to create violence and cause confrontation," he said.

The atmosphere at the red-shirt rally along Ratchadamoen avenue was peaceful. Leaders of the UDD took turns getting on stage trying to convnice passers by to join their campaign, while anti-government songs were played to stir up their supporters.
122432.jpg

Puea Thai Party MPs led by deputy leader Plodprasop Suraswadi showed up at the rally site late afternoon, claiming they visited the protesters because the party had received reports that the government had planned to crackdown on the protesters.

Puea Thai MP for Nakhon Phanom Paijit Sriworakhan expected the number of protesters to be around 500,000 by Sunday.
He said that about 200,000 red-shirts were coming from the Northeast, while Puea Thai MP for Phrae Worawat Ua-apinyakul said more than 80,000 demonstrators were travelling from the North and they should arrive in Bangkok around midnight Saturday.

Metropolitan Police commissioner Santhan Chayanon said earlier the day that he is concerned that a third party might try to incite violence and some protesters might be able to sneak weapons to the demonstration.

Authorities have deployed 50,000 security forces to patrol the city and to maintain peace and order.

ANALYSIS
Brinkmanship begins - who will blink first?

By TULSATHIT TAPTIM
THE NATION

<!--End PhotoName1-->
There was no phone-in on Friday night from their beloved hero, but rural red-shirted people seemed to hear an SOS from Thaksin Shinawatra, wherever he was. Yesterday was a big response compared to the lukewarm showing of their Bangkok counterparts the day before, and with red masses from upcountry pouring into the city, the game is now on.

Police put the number of protesters at below 100,000, but media estimates may be above that by a substantial margin.
A stage has been set up at the Phan Fah Bridge on Rajdamnoen Avenue, which will remain the key rally site at least for the next few days. With that, a very dangerous stand-off officially began and anyone who thinks Thailand's political crisis is nearing an end will have to think again.
This face-off may end quickly, though, as it's in nobody's interest for it to drag on. Protest leader Jatuporn Promphan - remarkably rejuvenated after looking like a fish in polluted water on Friday - gave Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva until noon today to dissolve the House of Representatives or the red shirts would up the ante tomorrow.
MODUS OPERANDI
The ultimatum will not be met, and tomorrow will see the ultimate game of who blinks first. Red shirts, sources said, would attempt to "provoke" the authorities but keep the aggression just below the level that could justify a crackdown. They will move around and surround some places, causing <leo_highlight style="border-bottom: 2px solid rgb(255, 255, 150); background: transparent none repeat scroll 0% 50%; cursor: pointer; display: inline; -moz-background-clip: -moz-initial; -moz-background-origin: -moz-initial; -moz-background-inline-policy: -moz-initial;" id="leoHighlights_Underline_0" onclick="leoHighlightsHandleClick('leoHighlights_Underline_0')" onmouseover="leoHighlightsHandleMouseOver('leoHighlights_Underline_0')" onmouseout="leoHighlightsHandleMouseOut('leoHighlights_Underline_0')" leohighlights_keywords="traffic" leohighlights_url_top="http%3A//shortcuts.thebrowserhighlighter.com/leonardo/plugin/highlights/3_1/tbh_highlightsTop.jsp?keywords%3Dtraffic%26domain%3Dwww.nationmultimedia.com" leohighlights_url_bottom="http%3A//shortcuts.thebrowserhighlighter.com/leonardo/plugin/highlights/3_1/tbh_highlightsBottom.jsp?keywords%3Dtraffic%26domain%3Dwww.nationmultimedia.com" leohighlights_underline="true">traffic</leo_highlight> chaos here and there and putting more and more pressure on the government. But they will do it in a way that if shots were fired or protesters were clubbed, state troops would be the ones looking like the bad guys.
The government's initial strategy was patience, patience and patience, and it was generally believed that the protest could not outlive the funding. Problem is, if the campaign is costing Bt30 million a day, as some have calculated, it's not much for Thaksin. A 10-day sit-in would just cost Bt300 million, or under 1 per cent of the assets his family is supposed to get back from <leo_highlight style="border-bottom: 2px solid rgb(255, 255, 150); background: transparent none repeat scroll 0% 50%; cursor: pointer; display: inline; -moz-background-clip: -moz-initial; -moz-background-origin: -moz-initial; -moz-background-inline-policy: -moz-initial;" id="leoHighlights_Underline_1" onclick="leoHighlightsHandleClick('leoHighlights_Underline_1')" onmouseover="leoHighlightsHandleMouseOver('leoHighlights_Underline_1')" onmouseout="leoHighlightsHandleMouseOut('leoHighlights_Underline_1')" leohighlights_keywords="the%20state" leohighlights_url_top="http%3A//shortcuts.thebrowserhighlighter.com/leonardo/plugin/highlights/3_1/tbh_highlightsTop.jsp?keywords%3Dthe%2520state%26domain%3Dwww.nationmultimedia.com" leohighlights_url_bottom="http%3A//shortcuts.thebrowserhighlighter.com/leonardo/plugin/highlights/3_1/tbh_highlightsBottom.jsp?keywords%3Dthe%2520state%26domain%3Dwww.nationmultimedia.com" leohighlights_underline="true">the state</leo_highlight>.
Informed sources last night said the government could decide to go down the risky road of declaring a state of emergency to boost the military's power in controlling the situation. This could affect the overall outlook. After all, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has looked totally non-confrontational over the past few days, basically thanking the red shirts for their peaceful approach to date.
Another important factor is Thaksin's whereabouts. If he has really been expelled from Dubai, his desperation must have naturally grown. And if he really plans to settle down in Cambodia, like news reports suggested, there will be ramifications domestically as well as bilaterally.
In his brief phone-in to supporters yesterday, he ambiguously claimed he had to leave Dubai because the United Arab Emirates government was "annoyed" by whining from Bangkok. He said he was in Europe at the moment and hoped to have a longer phone-in today.
Red leaders claim, or hope, that the number of protesters will rise to 400,000 today, four times the government's estimate. That would be a big number, but not a government-toppling number. As long as the government keeps things under control, that is.
Government advantages, administration sources said, include the military's better preparations compared with during the Songkran turbulence almost a year ago. But more crucial is the fact that the red shirts can't afford to run riot without justification this time. A repeat of the Songkran madness and they'd lose. This has led to all kinds of rumours, an outstanding one involving "fake red shirts" wreaking havoc to instigate bloodshed or provoke a crackdown.
Good news is, this stand-off is being dictated by both sides' unwillingness to look like a villain. But here's the bad news: it always starts this way.

I used to visit Thailand quite frequently for work or leisure.
Have not been for a few years now.
How is like to go there on business or holiday these days? Is it very tense and uncertain? Or is it as comfortable and pleasant as it was before?

The last time when you visited BKK, were both BTS and MRT in operation ? This will be the main difference as far as travelling around BKK is concerned.

As for shopping, Siam Paragon is a new addition. Again, it depends on what your last visit was.

Tense ? Well, just avoid Victory Monument, and Rajadamri Road where the Police HQ is located (when the Red Shirts are having their party).

One thing - the weather is freaking hot ! You can fry an egg on the bonnet of any vehicle out there.

<!-- Google Dtail Ads --> Red-shirt leader Arisman Pongruangrong claimed Saturday that some 20,000 Buddhist monks would join the protest organised by the Democratic Alliance Against Dictatorship (DAAD) next weekend.

He said the monks would come from temples like Dhammakaya, Kaew Fah and many others in the North, Notheastern and Central region of the country.

The monks would provide moral boosters to red shirts, he said, and would pray and chant so the demonstrators can defeat devil (mara). Monks will also remind police, soldiers and government to be mindful and to not harm red shirts.

Aside from monks, Arisman said some 5,000 farming families have began making their journey to Bangkok with stop over areas in Nakhon Ratchasima and Saraburi. He warned Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thueksubhan to not try to stop farming vehicles from entering Bangkok saying farmer would march by foot even if their vehicles were stopped.

Abhisit Vejjajive really should learn from Mr.lky and family, in the begining he should start to SUE and bankrupt all opposition leaders; must make sure to control justice system and leetizens' housing, things could be differently.

My friend in Bangkok estimated quarter million. No matter how much some people disagree with Thaksin, he's still the legitimate PM if there's still any sense of honoring democracy; he won two elections by popular votes but was ousted by force.

Some people mistakenly aliken Thaksin's TRT to Singapore's PAP. However, note that unlike in Singapore where the rich and powerful tend to side PAP, the poor people tend to side opposition. In Thaksin's case, it's reverse. The rich and powerful wanted him out and the poor and powerless supported him.

Poor Singaporeans complain ministers in power paying themselves millions and millions from taxpayers' money. Rich Singapore says it's OK, market rates. In Thailand, rich Thais accuse Thaksin of corruption and confiscate a huge chunk of his fortune, whereas the poor Thais accepted and defended Thaksin making his fortune the market way, not from the taxpayers but from the market in business. When in power, what did Thaksin do with taxpayers' money? He subsidised poor rural and farm regions heavily. The rich who paid most taxes are unhappy about it. They said Thaksin's using their money to buy votes. Thaksin abolished capital gains tax on M&A. Many rich Thais and companies jumped on it and made fortunes out of this law too. It's all debated and passed through in Thai Parliament. When Thaksin sold his Shin Corp to Temasek, they turn around and accuse him of abuse of power and evading tax. You go figure. Millions of Thais, however poor, have eyes and brains.

The lady in the video said "I'm here because I'm poor and want my voice to be heard." That statement is worth a thousand-word thesis. The rich in Thailand wants to maintain a lower class strata of poor Thais, so that cheap maids, laborers and prostitutes are in constant supply for their businesses and pleasures. That's the stark naked and ugly fact in the standoff.
