Hong Kong preview Wednesday September 15

RACE 1 - REPULSE BAY HANDICAP

Million Darling (3) put up a game effort in defeat in each of his three Valley sprints with betting support, including a hard fought third off a deep trip over the 1,000m to close the campaign, and looks clearly the one to beat here. Yuan’s Fortune (8) was never better than sixth in three runs last term, but never was far off the finish and did travel well in a grass trial last month. Charmgold (2) was more disappointing than not last term but is attractively rated off his best form, including a trip third behind Tai Sing Yeh in February, and is hard to ignore. Value Choice (10) was given too much to do off a deep trip when resuming off a big weight in Class Five after a dismal campaign last season but is worth considering for a minor slice with a fitness edge on a few of his rivals over a preferred Valley track.

RACE 2 - REPULSE BAY HANDICAP

Karbridge (3) had been hard to recommend on his overall form to date with a single trip win from 16 starts but travelled much more genuinely when returning to action last Wednesday with a cozy 1,000m win off a light weight. A tougher test but remains a definite top-three threat. Fishking Glory (5) had excuses in his final three starts after coming up third best over the 1,000m in two of three earlier runs and did trial well over this course for his new trainer. Sugar On Top (8) raced consistently well last term, chalking up an overdue win in May in Class Five and four placings, including a good neck second behind Showtime at his final run. He’s had the benefit of a nice trial over this course and must be considered. Par Excellence (2) ran home second best in five of 10 runs last term, including his opening three runs over the 1,000m and two others over this course and distance. He must be kept safe.

RACE 3 - STANLEY HANDICAP

My Way (4) worked home nicely for a course and distance third behind King’s Choice at final start last season in this grade and looks to be on song following a stable change. He’s an each-way chance. Dr Union (8) caught the eye when flashing home late a distant second behind All The Winners last Wednesday over this trip and will be running on late. Planet (2) failed to make any sort of impression on his final four runs after a closing third over this trip in April but is coming along nicely for his new trainer and will relish the drop in grade. Good Job (5) was scrubbed up late to place second at his final start last season over this trip and appeared to need the run when getting home sixth best in that All The Winners race.

RACE 4 - SOUTH BAY HANDICAP

New Idea (3) resumed after a solid season with a ground covering fifth behind Fionn’s Dragon on opening day over the 1,400m for his new trainer and will be fitter for the outing. He’s ideally drawn and has definite claims. Win A Dozen (6) relished the removal of the visors in December, making all for a trip win in March and also make the frame in six other runs. He’s the one to catch. Viva Guy (5) came to life with blinkers in December for an eventual course-and-distance win in June and was also six times placed. He merits consideration, despite a tricky gate. Oasis Davis (10) had his season cut short by a suspensory problem last term but did made good ground late when resuming on opening day at Sha Tin, despite a tonne of trouble in the run. He has a gear change and is a place chance.

RACE 5 - THE HONG KONG MANAGEMENT ASSOCIATION 50TH ANNIVERSARY CUP (HANDICAP)

At Moment In Time (2) made an impact in the finish in five of six runs over this trip last season, winning in May before making the frame in his final two runs, despite a tardy jump. He’s one of the main chances. Grand Dragon (1) remains a question mark this course but did work home well to place in his first five starts last season before the hard runs took its toll at his final four starts. He’s capable of sprinting fresh off a nice rest and will be suited by the tempo with the claim well used. Star Of Fame (4) is at a new high in the handicaps but raced consistently well all season long over the 1,200m at the Valley for two wins and three placings, finishing up with a close effort behind Turf Magic. He’ll likely be ridden cold from his gate but can run on late. Our Pegasus (6) got the better of At Moment In Time in his Class Three debut in February before failing off a higher mark in his next four runs, though does look an improved runner during the break for his new trainer and needs to be kept safe.

RACE 6 - SHEK O HANDICAP

Mr Topaz (8) has caught the eye in his past two runs with a shadow roll, a season ending third behind Bouncer over this trip before coming back on opening day with a good run for fourth behind the boom sprinter Good Words over the 1,200m. He’s an each-way chance. Sleep Well (11) has come alive following a stable change late last season for a third over the Sha Tin mile before chalking up an easy win over this trip in his season finale and has caught the eye in training. He looks dangerous off a light weight. Floral Picasso (1) made it home on top two runs back over this trip and didn’t disgrace when fading late in his final run in Class Three. He trialed nicely over this course and will given a keen sight. Vanquish Delight (4) failed to strike at his final four runs after staying on well for an 1,800m win over this course in Class Three but did make ground in a recent trial over this track and is attractive in this grade.

RACE 7 - CHUNG HOM KOK HANDICAP

Mr Vigorous (3) put his best foot forward in April to bounce off a rating bottom with two come-from-behind trip wins on a wet track and two placings. He responded well enough in a Sha Tin trial and will be hard to keep out of the finish. Windicator Returns (6) was a much-improved runner following a stable change last season and resumed last Wednesday with a game third behind Golden Bauhinia on a soft track. He’s proven over this trip and can figure. Sea Prince (10) was a model of consistency with a top-five result in 10 of 13 starts, winning his opening run over the 1,400m and capping the season with a nice second behind Flying Supreme. He doesn’t mind this Valley trip and must be a chance. Go Fay Fay (9) came alive late last season in Class Four for a 1,000m second behind Vintage Hussler before ending the campaign with a good late effort to win a rich Class Four over this Valley trip. He’ll make it close at the line.

RACE 8 - MIDDLE BAY HANDICAP

Best Military (6) appears to have made some progress during the break after a luckless fifth over this trip last Wednesday behind Fun Rider when completely held-up for a run in the stretch drive. He gets Douglas Whyte for this run and must have claims. Happy Ambassador (7) didn’t have things go his way at his final three runs last term but has terrific first-up stats, winning last season over this trip, and is coming along nicely in his work. Packing Friend (12) showed good consistency in six of seven runs, including a win and second over this trip, and can be forgiven for his final run on a yielding track in this grade. Keep him safe off a light weight. Hold Hands (1) failed to get his picture taken last season but is capable of a big run, including a close Class Three second over this trip and a Class One third behind Irian over the 1,800m in two June outings.

Moreira edges closer to record
Michael Lee

Sunday, October 03, 2010

Leading rider Joao Moreira inched closer to becoming the winningest jockey at Kranji when Fuku Ichiban rang up win No 103 on Sunday.

The Brazilian jockey, who is well clear in the premiership and all but guaranteed of being crowned champion at the end of the year, is now only three wins short of Noel Callow’s record of 106 wins established in his bumper year in 2007.

Fuku Ichiban ($26) hit the front at the 300m of the $65,000 Restricted Maiden (2&3YO) Panasonic Laser Multi-Function Printer Stakes (1400m) to open up a three-length lead, which was eventually cut back to 1 ½ length by Gold Streak (Nelito Cunha) who made up ground to finish a meritorious second. Third was Biggest Chief (Saimee Jumaat) another length away. The winning time was 1min 23.81secs.

Joao Moreira guides Fuku Ichiban to victory in Race 2 on Sunday.

“He’s still very green and did everything wrong in the race,” said Moreira. “When I put pressure on him, he hung in badly and I had to stop riding him for a few strides.

“But he did finish very strongly. He will surely improve from that run.”

Moreira rode the Black Minnaloushe three-year-old to a barrier trial victory back in June, but was picked for Sunday’s ride - his first in a race - at the right time.

“He was even more green then. Mr Yusof gave him to other riders and waited till he had settled better to put me back on,” said Moreira.

“I think the blinkers helped him focus better. All credit to Mr Yusof.”

The Singaporean handler agreed the King Villa-owned galloper still needs more exposure despite the breakthrough win.

“At one stage, I thought his saddle slipped. He was a very difficult ride,” said Yusof who was at his 12th win, six short of his 2009 score.

“If another jockey was riding, I don’t think he would have won.”

Fuku Ichiban came to Singapore as an unraced two-year-old originally named Ahmadinjad and was a NZ$30,000 purchase.

Moreira takes another Major Step with MRA record

Michael Lee

Friday, December 03, 2010

Singapore champion-elect jockey Joao Moreira made another entry in the record books by equalling the Malayan Racing Association record of most wins in one season with his 115th winner aboard Major Step on Friday.

Moreira, who has already rewritten the record books when he bettered Noel Callow’s 2007 score of 106 aboard Luckyatsuccess on November 12, said he was aware of the new MRA mark, but said records are meant to be broken and he did not expect to stay on top forever.

“It’s just a number, but still, I’m proud of what I’ve achieved,” said the Brazilian jockey.

“I didn’t expect to break all these records as the competition is so tough here. I'll say it again, I wouldn’t have done it without the trainer’s and owner’s support.”

Joao Moreira guides Major Step to a commanding maiden victory on Friday.

Moreira now shares the absolute winningest tally with nine-time Singapore jockey Saimee Jumaat, whose haul was however achieved in 1998 between Singapore and the three Malaysian racecourses, including four home-based wins.

The Douglas Dragon-trained Major Step ($49) was at his second start after showing early speed before finishing down the course at debut over a Polytrack 1000m race on November 5.

The Brocco three-year-old was one of the best away from his outside gate, but Moreira allowed even-money favourite A Certain Smile (John Powell) to boot up on the inside and take the lead.

A Certain Smile greeted the judge the first at the point of turn, but it soon became obvious Major Step was travelling a lot better on his outside. Once Moreira let slip some reins, the race was all over in the blink of an eye.

Major Step pulled away to bolt in by seven lengths from A Certain Smile who battled away to hold Haizum (Mohd Zaki) off for third by 1 ½ lengths. The winning time was 1min 12.52secs.

“I worked him last week and I could tell he had improved a lot,” said Moreira. “He jumped so well today but when I saw John Powell push his horse to hold the lead, I didn’t insist.

“When he turned for home, he gave me his best. I was quite surprised by the way he won.

“On that win, I think he should win more races.”

Dragon also said he was a little taken aback by the pulverising win, but said he had been expecting a forward showing second-up nonetheless.

“He was very green at his first run, but he showed us on that day he had plenty of gate speed,” said Dragon.

“He was a lot fitter with that run under his belt. He ran a good barrier trial the other day.

“I wasn’t too concerned by the wide draw as I knew he would jump well and put himself in a good position.

“I didn’t expect him to win so easily, but I’m not getting too carried away either. It was just a Restricted Maiden race.”

Major Step is raced by the DOC Stable and cost only A$11,000 as a yearling.
