Canadian PR

I'm new to this forum and am hoping that seniors out there will help with my questions

1) I submitted my Canadian PR application in Aug 2007 under the skilled worker scheme. Now after waiting for almost 36 months, they still have not requested for me to submit documents. Furthermore my occupation is not among the 29 under the new list anymore. My fear is that there will be a longer wait time. Anyone out there in a similar situation?

2) I intend to quit my job soon and work on a freelance (self employed?) basis. Will this affect the outcome when they process my application?

Thanks in advance!

Have you done your IELTS? It's mandatory now. If not, time yourself to take the IELTS. The validity of the IELTS is one year. CIC wants to see your IELTS result together with your document update. I expect CIC to contact you for document update by the end of this year. You are under the old simplified system; not affected by the latest NOC 29. If your total points is 67 or more, and your documents are in order, you should get your Canadian PR around Aug. 2011. Make sure that you don't get any criminal record(e.g. impaired driving etc.) before your PR approval because you need to apply
for police clearance ceritifcate(s) for all the countries that you have lived for 6 months or more. CIC will make exhaustive security and background checks.
If you have applied under the federal skilled worker under the old simplified system, the job experience is based on the last 10 years before the date of your application(Aug. 2007).

You should consider yourself lucky as you have applied in Aug.2007. Now under NOC 29 federal skilled worker category, the annual intake quota has been reduced to 20,000, and under each category of the 29 categories, maximum 1,000 approvals only. Now, there is a mad rush of applications.

Good luck and don't keep Canada waiting.

Thanks to Asychee and Hock for you prompt reply,

It's certainly helpful to learn more from relavant forums. That's just too much of information and misinformation to digest. The wait is killing me and I need to know where i stand.

I certainly did not know about the mandatory IELTS. Was thinking that having a 'A' level cert and local degree is sufficient to prove our English proficiency.

Is it a must to submit original documents? Even things like birth cert and marriage cert?? or will a certified true copy do? CIC didn't make this clear in the document cheklist.

I know there's a huge backlog under the old simplified system. Those who applied under the recent system actually gets processed faster despite a lower intake!

Nonetheless, i'm keeping my fingers crossed and getting my documents ready.

I sent originals to CIC only for police clearance certificate and
IELTS result(sent by British Council), and the rest notarised true copies.

I will be living in Calgary as a PR, and my S'pore passport will expire
in Oct. 2011. How do I go about renewing my S'pore passport?
I was told that the S'pore embassy in Canada has ceased operation.
Is it true?

Hi Whistler,

Thanks for the information. How about renouncing my S'pore citizenship
3 years later so that I can withdraw my CPF money? Is it download the forms from ICA website, fill up details and send to ICA together with notarized copy of my Canadian citizenship. And, ICA will inform CPF to release my money to me?

Bak Wa specialist? I didn't know Bee Chun Heng also immigrated to
Canada. I will give you a shout if I bring my family to visit West Edmonton
Mall.

I read many condo developers went bellies up, empty condos aplenty, and
mosquito nuisance in Edmonton.

Hock, just be cautious there hor, tornado touched down in Calgary

Tornado touches down northwest of Calgary

CALGARY - A tornado touched down near Sundre, northwest of Calgary, on Friday afternoon.

There are no reports of injury or damage, said Dan Kulak, a meteorologist with Environment Canada.

Several people called the agency to report seeing the twister touch down about 25 kilometres west-northwest of Sundre at about 3:20 p.m. MT, he said.

The thunderstorm cell responsible for the twister weakened less than an hour later. The tornado dissipated, but the storm, which was tracking east at 20 km/h is still capable of producing large hail, heavy rain and strong winds, said Environment Canada.

A tornado warning for the counties of Mountain View and Clearwater has been downgraded to a severe thunderstorm warning.

Most of Alberta is under severe thunderstorm watches or warnings on Friday afternoon.

Very wise choice to choose Calgary, sales tax in Alberta is only 5%

Other provinces, you have to pay more than 12%

Alberta sales tax =0, federal sales tax=5%(lower than Sinkapore)

Hello Canada!

It is amazing that the Albertan government can function without a sales tax, the oil revenue must be good.

Look at:

Alberta - GST = 5%
BC - HST = 12%
Ontario - HST = 13%

The worst place to go to is Prince Edward Island, PST + GST = 15.5%

It appears that the Province of Alberta has royalties from oil and gas, and that is has no debt. Whereas, the the economy of the several Atlantic Provinces are not as diversified, in fact not much for Prince Edward Island.

I believe that the personal income tax rates in Alberta is compararively lower than the other major provinces.
