Let's not lose our empathy and compassion. Sinkapore is a true blue country, yet you left it.

Many immigrants chose Canada because of its social programmes. Then when they are in, they support tax cuts and expect no change in the programmes. Our foolish they are. If they want to live in a low-tax country with little social programmes, they should stay in Asia or head to sinkapore.

I left Singapore because it was a small country with limited land. Sooner or later that will limit its progress severely. I never left Singapore because of politics.

I have no issue with paying taxes and supporting programs. However, I would like the government to spend the money wisely and not let it be open to abuse. Economically I am definitely blue.

When it comes to healthcare I am red.

People who need help should be helped but I think a limit should be put in place. After some time, you can tell whether the person is there just for the help or has used the help and moved on.

Alberta while being pretty much the bluest in Canada is still red in comparison to Singapore. Having said that, social programs were not what attracted me to Canada. It was the large open spaces and abundant resources.

Those who had interacted with me back in 2003 will remember I never banked on relying on social programs in planning my move to Canada.

Congrats! Did you check out the Sasketchewan government offer to doctors who will be willing to work in the rural areas? It is open to local and foreign-trained doctors. I have the opinion that it is easier to get register in Sasketchewan.

Thanks. I never really expected to go back to medicine and it wasn't something I was dying to get back to either.

I had made my mind up that I would rather live in the city and do something else than to go to the rural areas and be a doctor. I have not looked too much at the Sask program frankly. But I have read that there are many unhappy IMGs asking why Sask would go to India to recruit family doctors there when there are thousands of IMGs trying to get it and many are from India as well.

I don't know the situation in Sask but I heard from a colleague that there are many south asians in Sask. I don't say this with any opinion, but just factually that perhaps south asians dominate the immigrant scene there.

Even if I did not get residency in Calgary, I would probably have just continued my career and pursue land agent license than to go to Sask to be a family doctor in a rural area.

Sasketchewan always had a problem getting people to live there. Until the commodity boom in the last few years, that province was losing people. Perhaps the IMGs are not willing to relocate to SK.

They have been the major source of immigration for the last decade. I suspect the Conservative government has changed the rules to make it harder for them to come qualify, after all how much curry can Kenny eat to court their votes.

There are always going to be people abusing the system. The issue is then will you throw the baby out with the bath water because of that or just try to reduce the abuse?
So, are you the Wildrose type or Red Tory?

Many immigrants came here for the space and the programmes. That's why when the economies in their homeland boom, many chose to move back for the dough. Canada is not the place if you want to make big money.

Definitely not Wildrose! No no no.

Red Tory I suppose. Although when I look at the PC I can see so many similarities between them and the PAP back in Singapore. Political party synonymous with government because of being too long in power...... Oh well nothing new to us really. Haha!

Indeed Canada is not the place to make big money. There is also estate tax which helps to balance things at the end. I think it is good so that some of the riches a man accumulates goes back to society and not just concentrated with his offspring.

With regards to abusing systems, I am actually not for a forgiving sort of justice system. People can commit murder and get off in a very short couple of years. I don't support that. Does that make me someone who will throw the baby out with the bathwater?

Reducing abuse? In my line of work we deal with First Nations Bands and I can see where the abuse allegations come from.

Definitely.
I came to Toronto with 2 suit cases and $1,500.00.
But I started at the bottom, or below bottom, because other articling students get their share of work, whereas during my first few months, I was asked to do photocopying and hand delivery of letters and envelopes (couriers not as plentiful at that time).
I am still not financially successful compared to my schoolmates who are in Singapore.

Oh I know for a fact that many IMGs apply to Sask. Actually for the record, the IMGs I have met are mostly from south asia and the middle east. There are very very few other types of IMGs.

Saskatchewan doesn't seem very enticing to me. Mostly flat ground. And my family likes to ski. Already Edmonton is kind of far away from the Rockies. Sask? No thanks.

My relative who is staying in Vancouver now has 6 kids. When he first arrived in Canada he only had kid:smile:

If iCanada was as expensive as Spore, there is no way he could have afford to have all those kids.

Hey how are you John Boy..Anyway I feel Canada is way better for those who are in the blue collar type work and not afraid to get their hands dirty or sweating it out. Can't really comment on PMET type jobs as I have never work these kinds of jobs before. The sinkees I met in retail and the FnB sector in peesai would definitely benefit working and living in Canada as to peesai. Working long hours in peesai does not mean anything. In fact you only spend more then you earn. End of the day no one going to take care of you when you are sick or have medical problems due to the long back breaking hours at work. Have a few friends of mine now having severe back problems due to their work.

Also I would also like to add that those white collar workers whom had to leave their jobs because of health or whatever reasons in peesai will be in for a shock if they wanted to work part time as a sales staff or service staff because of the pay and long hours. My cousin in Canada got retrenched in his comfy job as an exec and to make ends meet he worked in a office supply store for awhile. The pay was of course far less but at least it could sustain himself and a family of 5, a mortgage, a car loan and other stuff. In peesai he would probably be working an equivalent to Popular bookstore. I dont really think staff at Popular bookstore are paid well enough to have a family of 5 and own a car in peesai.

One of my other cousin worked at now defunct Blockbuster videos during his uni days and got promoted to manager within 2 years. He bought a house and a SUV.
Back then, I do not recall seeing any video stores jobs in peesai that paid enough for a sinkee to live that kind of life my cousin did.

Sure there is no guarantee of good jobs in any cuntry, but in peesai there is no guarantee of anything even if you have a job. People are scared out of their wits in peesai, not knowing whether they will be replaced by cheap FTs. With flats and home prices on the rise, I feel peesai going to have a huge number of bankrupts in the future. How to have kids in a cuntry that will sell you out leaving you high and dry. No one wants that for their kids man.

Sure my kids may or may not be successful in in their jobs but at least they have a shot for a successful life in places like Canada or OZ. Cant say the same about peesai though. If your workplace in peesai have more and more FTs each day working beside you, your number is kind of up. From the looks of it now, even PMET jobs are under threat. No sector is safe in peesai. Some already lost like the FnB sector and retail.

Have you bother to find out why?

QUOTE]

Yes, I have tried to find out the reason for the 25%-40% higher prices in Canada compared to the US. But I have never figured out why. People I asked always scratch their head and said different things. Some say it is the retailers price gouging, some said it is the wholesalers cornering the market.

Others said that it is because the Canadian dollar has appreciated versus the US dollar but the retailers have not adjusted the pricing down to reflect the appreciation.

If you know the answer, please tell me.

It is the lack of competition. Walmart and Target in the US sell same product at much cheaper price than in Canada. Yes, some items have higher duties in Canada but for the most part, the price differential is attributed to lack of competition. A market of 33 million cannot be compared to a market of 330 million.

I share your view. I like the death penalty when a life is lost even in the case of automobile accidents. I believe there are more deaths associated with automobile accidents than homicides. However, there are societies like Canada that believe in the sanctity of life. Most of the time, a murder conviction will be 25 years of jail time with no parole. Is that light?

]Reducing abuse? In my line of work we deal with First Nations Bands and I can see where the abuse allegations come from.
Have you seen how first nation folks are being treated by the general population? And that stereotype is perpetuate by the Federal government. The First Nations should just declare war on Canada and keep their land. Why should they be treated like beggars? In the majority of cases, funding for public services for First Nations is below the level in the mainstream, yet when programmes fail, like schools, the accusations are always directed at the First Nations.
Look at successful First Nations like the band that host the cyber casinos. When the First Nations can control their own destiny, they have dignity and are equal to the whites.

But how do you explain the fact that prices of the exact, identical, same items are about 60%-70% cheaper in Singapore as compared to Canada?

Singapore has a population of 5 million compared to Canada, which has a population of almost 40 million.

Ever try going to places like Longo's or Sobeys to shop? They charge C$7 for a very small strip of uncooked chicken breast.

The same strip of chicken breast can be bought in SG for less than S$2.

How do you explain that?

And how do you explain the sky high telco charges in Canada? People pay C$60-80 for very basic barebones wireless plans in Canada.

Don't exaggerate lah.

I live in Bedok North and the wet market here can sell you small strips of chicken breast for less than S$2 per strip if you ask nicely.

Go Canada for a week and see if you can survive the ultra sky high prices in Toronto/Vancouver.

Then you will know what cry father cry mother means.

Hi there,

The locals in Edmonton are extremely friendly and warm. You can see it from the way the majority drive on the roads. I can't say the same from my experience driving in Calgary. So this varies a lot from city to city, county to county etc. Generally the smaller the community the warmer? The less foreigners the better?

There was one instance when we were waiting to cross a road. We were not at a crosswalk. But the cars stopped for us. So we crossed. As we crossed, someone from a Ford F-150 truck in the line of vehicles that stopped shouted "Next time go to the crosswalk!"......

When I was in Edmonton a long time ago, even though I already had a Spore license I decided to go through the driver education program run by the Alberta Motor Association. I was surprised by what I learned there. I was taught that as a motorist my responsibility extended to protecting pedestrians:eek: For example if I saw a pedestrian crossing the street, I should use my car to protect the pedestrian. Such quaint ideas:smile:

However I do agree that Calgarian drivers can be very impatient. Driving there is almost like driving in Spore:wink:

Many Sporeans don't understand that blue collar workers in Canada can make more than white collars. Heard of an asian female white collar worker who got promoted because no one else wanted the promotion because it mean't more work.
Sometimes it's not about $$$ but more about the quality of life. Heard of many stories about new arrivals from Sporean working at a higher pace before they start to relax & take the oppurtunity to spend more time with the children, relax, get a hobby,....

Serious Bro.

The ultra sky high prices and taxes in Canada is no joke.

And if you add to that the passive aggressiveness and unfriendliness of the locals, you got a very bad, fatal, killer combo, like in Mortal Kombat.

Actually, Canada is the PERFECT place on earth, it is just that the people on it are messed up. It is a vast land with a variety of climates and almost infinite resources. Everything about it is perfect except for the people and culture.

You seem to be a perfect target for rip-offs. Time to get out of your hole.
