But reading the posts I realize that I have been fortunate to have many forumers encouraging me all this time to get back into medicine in Canada.

Just a refresher and an update to my journey in Canada.

July 2010 - Moved family to edmonton
August 2010 - moved myself permanently to Edmonton.
September 2010 - 1st job in PVC window frame company as general assembly line laborer
Nov 2011 - Passed MCCEE exam
Jan 2012 - 2nd job as Land Administrator at Surface Land company in oil and gas industry
    May 2012 - Passed MCCQE1
    Oct 2012 - Passed NAC-OSCE
Dec 2012 - Passed MMI exam
Jan 2013 - Promoted to Project Manager handling big oil and gas company account
Feb 2013- invited for interview with U of C Family Medicine Residency Program
March 2013 - accepted into Land Agent (Landman) course in Alberta
March 2013 - successfully matched to U of C Family Medicine Residency Program via AIMG Program
April 2013 - commenced 3 month Externship program with the AIMG Program
June 2013 - Successfully completed Externship
July 2013 - Commenced Residency training in Family Medicine (2 year program)
Oct 2013 - applied for Canadian citizenship
Feb 2015 - Passed Canadian Citizenship exam
April 2015 - received Canadian Citizenship
May 2015 - Passed CCFP and LMCC Part II exams
July 2015 - Attained Certificate Registration with the Medical Council of Canada (LMCC), Certificant in Family Medicine with the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CCFP), Granted full independent practice permit with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA).
July 2015 - started independent practice at a clinic in Calgary and taking new patients.

It's been a few days since I started and it sure feels good to be free again. 2 years residency was a chore. It's like having to drive with the driving instructor with you all the time for 2 years! Now I am free to drive on my own.

Fully booked everyday so far. Clinic is mainly serving chinese/cantonese speaking patients. This was actively my choice and intention, leveraging on my language abilities and familiarity with the cultures. I observed that some Family Practices have been rather quiet and empty. Each year the residency program graduates about 70-80 new Family Physicians. My analysis was that Mandarin and Cantonese speaking doctors were a rare commodity. I was right. There are so many Mandarin speaking patients currently looking for a family physician that speaks their language. While they can speak English, they much prefer a doctor who can communicate with them in their native language. It's working out very well for me.

and for all those friends here who kept telling me and encouraging me to get back to medicine, I thank you wholeheartedly. I understand why now. It is much closer to how I have always wanted to practice medicine and help people. at the same time be well rewarded for doing so.

Another chapter has closed and a new one has opened.

And for Time2evacuate.....if you are reading this.......yes I am fully licensed now. But I do not have an MD. I have an MBBS. But it doesn't matter anymore. I am free to apply to any province and Territory to work as a specialist family physician. (all family physicians are considered specialists in Canada and I totally agree it is rightfully so having undergone their training)

The old delphiforums sammyboy had a more lively emigration thread. This Canada thread was doing well for a while but then individual spats somehow curbed the activity. A friend in Vancouver asked me what reasons I thought the thread here has died? I don't know. Is it less Singaporeans looking at Canada now? Honestly I don't really care if Singaporeans want to move here or not. But I hope my story is testament that dreams do come true.

Good luck and thank you to all the forumers in this thread. Hope you come back and chat once in a while.
Congrats, doc. So glad that you didn't give up your dream of practicing medicine after moving. It has been a long road but you made it. Life is good again. Best of luck.

NDP Government is good for Alberta. A federal NDP government would be excellent for Canada.

The Canadian government has veered so much to the right that Canada is no longer as highly regarded as it used to. It is seem as belligerent, pro-Isreal to the tee and a climate change denier.
Look at the audit of charities and ngo that criticised the government, I am reminded of the PAP.

If you want a one party system like sinkapore, it is time to move back to Sinkapore.

I hope that Canadians will recall the NDP government in Ontario, led by Bob Rae (who later joined the Federal Liberal Party),
which I believe, incurred budget deficits, and probably caused Ontario falling into the "debt trap."

Albertans may regret that they voted for an NDP government.

With respect, I hope that Canadians will not vote the NDP to form the next federal government.

You also forgot about the severe recession that happened during Rae's time. A good government take on deficit to counter the slack in demand and go into surplus during growth era. Please lah, be objective. That's why I hate right-wingers.
What did Harris give Ontarians? A 407 sell-off that continues to piss Ontarians. Harris cut welfare but had no problem paying Accenture big bucks like $250k a year for an admin assistant.

Tell me ...all the right-wing crap for the past 10 years of Harper rule ...how has that benefit Canada? 6 years after the Great Recession, Canada is still having anemic growth. Where are the jobs that are supposed to be created from the $60 billion tax cuts? The trade offs from those tax cuts ...there is less money left for national programs like health care, university education, child care.

Albertans may regret that they voted for an NDP government.
65 percents of Canadians already regret a right-wing federal government.

With respect, I hope that Canadians will not vote the NDP to form the next federal government.
Only the NDP can deliver a country more like the Scandinavian model. If you like the American style government, you can easily move to the US.

My Canadian friends have absolute disdain for the Harper government and express it vocally. I was a little taken aback by how vehement they were as I'm still learning about the various parties.

At the present time, I believe that none of the three parties (Conservatives, Liberals, NDP) can execute and implement the appropriate policies to improve the economy, reduce the deficit, reduce the unemployment.

There is no need to make allegations re: that I forgot the recession during Bob Rae's NDP government in Ontario, American style government).

How can the economy be improved when the focus is on tar sands? Nothing else matter. Denying dutch disease. Ontario's manufacturing was decimated by the high Canadian dollar.

It was not an allegation; it was based on your post. You blame Rae for the deficit but chose not to mention the context. If you showed objectivity, I would have accorded you respect.

Well, you'll never see the Straits Times cover a report against the government the way Globe & Mail does. The freedom of the press here is so refreshing compared to Singapore and I appreciate the diversity of opinions and coverage.

LKY-lite is learning from sinkapore. There are still many ex-sinkees who wish Canada to be like sinkapore in governance. Wonder why they still hang around here after their kids have already benefitted from the education system.

megathrust warning for the pacific northwest including british columbia and vancouver and seattle areas in particular. magnitude can be as high as 9.2, and it's about time or overdue. sell your vancouver properties and get the shit out of there. my seattle tenants have done so and moving out while the market is hot.
