Law Society - Thinking out of the Box

This is in reference to the insight article in today's ST. 19 Jul 08

Obviously after the Francis Seow affair over legislation on press laws, the intention of the Govt is to make the law society a sterile and compliant body.

Instead of wasting time and space, and pushing the barrow uphill on the clear restrictions placed by the Govt on the Law Society via Sec 38(1)(c) of the Legal Profession Act, lawyers should consider setting up a separate body to articulate their concerns.

There is nothing to stop the 3,500 strong practising legal fraternity to set a separate body to articulate society concerns even if it encroaches into the realm of politics. The PAP and the Govt will be hard pressed to place similar restriction as these do not govern conduct of legal practitioners in their vocational field. Lawyers in view of their expertise in the management of society rules are better placed than most to contribute on its impact to the man in the street and to society as a whole. As part of the intelligentsia (loosely described), their views are needed and needed to be heard.

If you can't hold a tennis tournament during the rainy reason, you either build a covered stadium around the venue or schedule it during the drier months of the year. Its pointless praying to the gods to stop the rain and the gods in the Istana are no different.
