New Straits Times

KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA: About 500 units of closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras will be put up in crime-prone areas by next April.

Deputy Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Hamzah Zainuddin said the government was looking for a company to undertake the RM75 million ($31.3m) project.

"We will install 32 units in Johor, the most in the country," he said at the launch of the World Habitat Day at the ministry yesterday.

Hamzah said the 496 cameras would be placed in areas where it will be visible to the public to thwart would-be thieves or robbers.

The cameras would have a visibility range of up to 200 metres.

"The cameras will be connected directly to the police station and the local councils in each state for monitoring," Hamzah said.
