THE recent food poisoning incident at the Geylang Serai market shows how poor hygiene can have a wide impact on public health, said Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong on Saturday.
During a community event to welcome new residents of his Marine Parade GRC, he urged Singaporeans to view hygiene as part of gracious behaviour.
'If you have poor hygiene, spitting in public places, littering, food all over the place, rats running around the market, that's very ungracious behaviour,' he said.
Mr Goh also extended his condolences to the families of the two women who died after eating rojak from a stall in the Geylang Serai Temporary Market, in what is possibly Singapore's worst case of mass food poisoning. The market is located in Marine Parade GRC.
[COLOR=_______]Some 150 people also fell ill and four are still in hospital.[/COLOR] Mr Goh said he hoped they would recover quickly. He said the incident suggested that something was amiss but stressed that Members of Parliament for the area were quick to respond and were not absent as some rumours had it.
Dr Ong Seh Hong, the MP in charge of the Kampong Ubi-Kembangan ward where the temporary market stands, was at the site 'very early on' after news of the food poisoning broke, Mr Goh said.
'He also visited the family of the deceased, who happened to be a constituent in the GRC,' he said, referring to Madam Aminah Samijo who died last Monday.
'But it's off the news because you don't expect people to follow you when you pay your respects to the family.'
Dr Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim, MP for the GRC's Kaki Bukit ward, had also visited the site, while Dr Fatimah Lateef, MP for the GRC's Geylang Serai ward, did not as she was abroad. [COLOR=_______]'Otherwise, she would also have been there,' Mr Goh added. Dr Ong, who spoke to reporters at the market last Friday, had also refuted rumours that he was not to be found after news of the incident broke.[/COLOR]

So whats the governments role

If they want to regulate everything and charge Sporeans for this & that, where is the responsibility of the gov't

They are making $$$ from the worker levees on new Sporeans which now outnumber Sporean citizens. Why don't they take responsibility for the reality they created?

Have they expanded the number of health inspectors? Responsibility of the gov't extends to regulating hygiene & not only collecting the rent. Have they even bothered to checks on the health of people entering Spore?

To date the gov't hasn't taken responsibility for any of the problems their policies have caused & its obvious that they will continue to hip hop as long as they don't have to answer to us "lesser mortals"

70% fault lies in the Gov, they pay themselves well and claim that world most efficient civil service, stupid people fear and trust them for taking care of their lives.

20% lies on the people who choose to eat at dirty establishments, with rats running around, you can still bring you family there, then you have no one to blame.

10% on the hawker, he should not show a "B" when he is actually "C"

This is not new since day 1. It is a well known fact. This government's policy is to be blameless.
If a hygiene campaign fails it is because the citizens didn't support it.

Why would anyone go to a dirty establishment?

What I notice is that many hawkers in the food court have a "D" rating. What I'd like to know is if this is their fault or the gov't fault? Can a hawker meet all the food hygiene guidelines from a tiny stall?

If you want a tidy place you must have the necessary space right? So are the stalls too small

'My customers have a good relationship with me and we do business based on moral consciousness,' said Mr Leow, 44, in Mandarin. 'If I can eat it, I can sell it. If anything happens, I am the first to die.'

The Sunday Times visited 23 food centres last week and while we saw many C-grade stalls, we could not spot any with a D rating. Some of the C-grade stalls were cluttered, had wet floors, were dimly lit and had black, oil-stained walls.
Some hawkers claimed that certification alone does not indicate their stalls' hygiene conditions.
'As long as customers look into the stall and judge its cleanliness for themselves, that's okay. The cleanliness certificate may not be able to reflect everything about our stall,' said stall helper Yu Hua, 40, of Wang Jiao Vegetarian Food in Haig Road Market.
Mrs Lee Guat Hoon, 55, owner of Jia Ping Coffee and Tea stall in Bedok South Road Market and Food Centre, said: 'Of course we want to improve and get an A, but this certificate is just a rating given by National Environment Agency. We are not very concerned with it. As long as we feel that it's clean, it's enough.'
But some C-grade hawkers have stepped up their hygiene standards.
'After we got C, the boss told us to tidy the place. We cannot leave things lying around any more,' said Mr Quek Lai Soon, 38, a stall helper at Ban Seng Huat Carrot Cake in Bedok South Road Market and Food Centre. He also wears gloves now.
In any case, Singaporeans don't seem too bothered by a stall's rating. A Sunday Times poll of 100 diners showed that two out of three do not think twice before ordering from their favourite hawker stall even if it does not have a good rating.
'I don't think the cleanliness certificate is accurate. I judge a stall based on my gut feeling,' said assistant engineer Ralph Seah, 28, who was eating at Bukit Timah Market and Food Centre. He once found a fried cockroach in his fries at a western food stall but 'I'm still eating their fries to this day'.
In fact, how delicious the food is at a stall does not necessarily correspond with its hygiene rating.
The Makansutra Food Guide on the best hawker food on the island features 72 stalls with the six-chopsticks 'die, die must try' rating.
The Sunday Times visited 52 of these stalls last week and found that 17 had an A rating, 32 had a B and three had a C.
Heng Gi Roasted Goose & Duck Meat in Tekka Temporary Market, for example, is raved about in Makansutra, and despite its C grade given out last August, sees a steady stream of diners.
Accounts manager Steven Teo, 59, was all smiles as he bought duck rice from the stall. 'I've been looking for this duck rice ever since the food centre shifted here. I don't care about the grade because the duck rice is so traditional and authentic. You can't find this anywhere else,' he said.
Mr K.F. Seetoh, Makansutra's publisher, felt that some of these ratings are not fully accurate.
'Most street hawkers in Singapore have a basic level of hygiene,' he said.
'Even a stall with an A rating doesn't look much cleaner than one rated B or C. Perhaps stalls rated D were rated at a wrong time,' he said, noting that stalls are not at their optimal state of cleanliness during peak operating hours. 'People don't eat from a stall because it's A, B, C or D. As long as they have trust in the hawker, they will still go back.'

Many moons ago, a similar case cropped up in Peasantpore and the culprit was traced to a filithy commie chink in a cake shop.

History points out the overseas Chinks are among dirtiest race in the world who eat anything that walk, swim or fly except cars, boats and planes. SARs hit both Peasantpore and another chink port city, HK.

Woody Goh seldom go to Marine Parade GRC at all. Kampong Ubi and Gayland Serai is famous for dirty coffeeshops and hawker centres. Haig Rd, Kampong Ubi, Eunos Cresent and Gayland Serai's hygiene is of C class as I have seen. The reports of around 100 rats caught in Geyland Serai market during the mass cleaning has raised questions about the hygiene in the food centres. They are also favourite spots for the PRC prostitutes and peidu mamas. I when to Kampong Ubi to have a look and wasn't pleased with the cleaniness of the estates.

The final outcome would be, more $$ will be collected from new measures implemented by the govt with the consumer paying the brunt of it whilst not necessarily getting any marked improvement in food safety, quality or value for money.
