SINGAPORE - A scion of the family that founded retail giant Metro Holdings appeared in court on Friday (Feb 3) morning to face drug-related charges.

Ong Jenn, the 41-year-old grandson of Metro founder Ong Tjoe Kim and the son of its former group managing director Jopie Ong, is represented by Senior Counsel Tan Chee Meng.

Ong was first charged on Nov 1, 2014 with trafficking in cannabis, as well as possession and consumption of the drug.

He is currently on trial for two of the eight drug-related charges against him.

Ong is accused of engaging in a conspiracy with a man known as Mohamad Ismail Abdul Majid to traffick a controlled drug.

Ong faces the possibility of jail time and caning if he is found guilty of the various charges he faces.

Mohamad Ismail was allegedly found to be in possession of a block of 92.68g of vegetable matter later found to be cannabis near a bus stop along Jurong Port Road at around 4.20pm on Oct 30, 2014.

Mohamad Ismail was also allegedly found to be in possession of one block containing 385.1g of fragmented vegetable matter later found to be a cannabis mixture.

Ong's remaining six charges have been stood down.

According to his online profile, Ong has been a business development manager at Metro Holdings since 2003. He attended Boston University's School of Management from 1996 to 2000.

He is also the founder and director of Tompang, a peer-to-peer retail platform operator. Metro Holdings was founded in 1957 by Mr Ong Tjoe Kim. It started out as a textile store at 72 High Street and
is today a property development and investment group with a turnover of $145.8 million and net assets of $1.4 billion as of March 31 2015.

Ong's father, Mr Jopie Ong, was group managing director from 1973 until his death in February last year. It was under his leadership that Metro grew from a two-storey shophouse into a retail behemoth
and, later, a substantial property player with interests in China, Japan and Britain.

SINGAPORE: When Ong Jenn left his Metro Holdings office at noon on Oct 31, 2014 to meet his regular drug dealer at a taxi stand nearby, he had no idea he was delivering himself to the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB).

Ong, 41, was arrested and S$2,000 in cash, meant to pay for a supply of cannabis, was seized by CNB officers.

Ong is the grandson of Ong Tjoe Kim, the founder of Singapore’s iconic Metro department stores, and the son of its former group managing director, Jopie Ong, who helmed the company for more than 40 years until his death last year.

Metro’s latest annual report lists Ong Jenn as a “substantial shareholder”.

In a statement taken after his arrest, Ong candidly admitted he was supposed to meet his dealer, “Mike”, to buy two blocks of weed for S$2,000.

He also admitted he was a habitual drug user. “I smoke weed every day,” Ong told CNB officer Senior Staff Sergeant Jeffrey Lim.

Though Ong admitted he bought weed from “Mike” – whose real name is Mohamad Ismail Abdul Majid – “more than 15 times”, he insisted the drugs were for his personal consumption.

At the opening of his trial on Friday (Feb 3), Ong denied he conspired with Ismail to traffic in a Class A controlled drug.

Ong faces a total of eight drugs charges. The current trial will deal with two of those charges, with the remaining six stood down. The two charges relate to 92.68 grams of cannabis and 385.1 grams of cannabis mixture, which deputy public prosecutors Ong Luan Tze and Michelle Lu say Ong and Ismail conspired to traffic.

The sting operation resulting in Ong’s arrest in 2014 was set in motion the day before, when Ismail was arrested along Jurong Port Road with two bundles of drugs in his backpack.

Ismail told CNB officer Senior Staff Sergeant Wilson Low that the drugs in the backpack were meant for someone known to him as “Yo”. He gave the officer “Yo’s” mobile number, which SSSgt Low then traced to Ong.

SSSgt Low instructed Ismail to message Ong, and when Ong replied, the officer pretended to be the drug dealer and set up a meeting with Ong at Ngee Ann City to pass him the cannabis.

When Ong appeared, he was placed under arrest.

Ismail was sentenced to 22 years’ jail and 18 strokes of the cane in September 2015, after he pleaded guilty to three drugs charges with another four taken into consideration.

He will testify against Ong on Feb 20.

Ong’s trial continues. He is represented by Senior Counsel Tan Chee Meng.

If convicted of conspiring to traffic a Class A controlled drug, Ong faces at least five years’ jail and five strokes of the cane.

That's the trouble when you have laws that incorporates presumption based on quantity. If the guy was an ordinary person and not a rich man's son he would have no hope.

Not quite true.
Potheads will tell you smoking weed actually makes you hungry BUT that said a daily user like him would know ways to counter this (sipping water etc) and would also have developed a tolerance level already.

cannabis can cure cancer.

MSM Finally Admits It, Cannabis Can Cure Cancer, It’s High Time We Stop Arresting People for It

Atlanta, Ga. – In a surprising move, CNN is reporting that marijuana may be a potential cure for certain types of cancer after numerous studies have shown the viability of cannabis as a potential cancer treatment. The report of marijuana being a potential cure was less surprising than the fact that it was covered prominently by a mainstream media outlet.

The stunning admission comes as Dr. Sanjay Gupta, CNN’s Chief Medical Correspondent, has gone on record stating,
“It’s time for a medical marijuana revolution.”

The research, cited by CNN, was conducted in numerous preclinical studies on mice and rats, as well as human cells. It has shown “that cannabinoids may inhibit tumor growth by causing cell death, blocking cell growth, and blocking the development of blood vessels needed by tumors to grow. Laboratory and animal studies have shown that cannabinoids may be able to kill cancer cells while protecting normal cells,” according to the

National Cancer Institute at the National Institute of Health.

Additionally, the National Cancer Institute reports that a study in mice “showed that cannabinoids may protect against inflammation of the colon and may have potential in reducing the risk of colon cancer, and possibly in its treatment.”

In another “laboratory study of delta-9-THC, human liver cancer cells showed that the substance damaged or killed the cancer cells. The same study of delta-9-THC in mouse models of liver cancer showed that it had antitumor effects,” according to the National Cancer Institute.
Positive signs were also shown in studies regarding breast cancer as “a laboratory study of cannabidiol (CBD) in estrogen receptor positive and estrogen receptor negative breast cancer cells showed that it caused cancer cell death while having little effect on normal breast cells. Studies in mouse models of metastatic breast cancer showed that cannabinoids may lessen the growth, number, and spread of tumors.”

The preliminary research is extremely promising and holds hope for numerous new treatments for numerous different types of cancer. The problem is that the U.S. federal government treats possession of marijuana as a criminal act.

Even the National Institute on Drug Abuse, a US federal government research institute whose mission includes “bringing the power of science to bear on drug abuse and addiction,” has officially admitted that marijuana extracts can kill cancer cells.

Currently, however, the U.S. government classifies cannabis as a Schedule I drug, meaning that the government considers it to have no acceptable medical usage or value. Other drugs classified as Schedule I are LSD, heroin, ecstasy (MDMA), and peyote.

To do research on marijuana, scientists need approval from numerous federal departments and approval is extremely rare. Subsequently, this designation has prevented researchers from conducting clinical trials of cannabis as a treatment for cancer in humans.

Imagine the possibilities if possessing this plant wouldn’t get you kidnapped and locked in a cage, or killed.
The system is laid out in such a way that it creates a dynamic where physicians refuse to even consider cannabis, despite seeing evidence that it works. Without it being legitimized through clinical research and practice standards, doctors fear professional repercussions and potentially losing their license to practice medicine.

The potential benefits from research into the medical uses for cannabis know no bounds. We could quite possibly be at the precipice of one of the greatest medical breakthroughs of our collective lives. If only the federal government would get out of the way and allow science to study this potential cure for cancer.
The time is now for us to make the changes we want to see happen; a medical revolution is taking place before our eyes. Please share this article with everyone you know to help awaken people to the potentially life-saving properties of cannabis and the cutting edge research that is proving it.
