The numbers don't add up in the article. It says that he is 87 years old, which means he is born in 1930 give or take one year. Then he says he joined the INA in 1943, which would have made him only 13 years old at that time. INA don't take 13 year old boys. They were made up of volunteers from the 44,000 Indians captured by the japs after the fall of SIngapore, they were not as desperate to recruit 13 year olds. Maybe he is getting senile in his old age?

Not true. The Malay Regiment distinguished itself in the Battle of Bukit Panjang before being overwhelmed.

I did some research into the INA. Its appears that the whole thing was mostly a ploy concocted by the Japs. The Japs offered captured Indians an opportunity to fight for independence. Independence from the Brits. They were to be armed and supported by the Japs and fight with jap units against the Brits. Once the Brits were defeated, they can run their own country, and the INA will be the official Indian army. Many Indians soldiers who weer captured during the fall of singapore joined the INA on promise of fighting for their country's independence. the alternative was continued imprisonment by the Japs torture, staevation, disease, etc. So, many joined up just to survive. Does not mean that they believe the Japs. Many were actually send out as labourers by the Japs which made a lot of INA recruits defect. The INA did fight some engagements against their former employers the British army but were largely ineffective. The Japs took a big risk arming these former enemies and putting the INA next to their own units.

u know what is the funniest thing?the japanese steamrolled thru malaya and singapore slaughtering malays and chinks left and right in a matter of 55 days and 2 weeks,but post war,singapore and malaysia loved to talk to each other like as though we are conquerors and empire builders.

ultimately i think the defense of singapore is reliant on malaysia,they have a huge hinterland to try to slow down and stop the enemy before they penetrate too far,whereas by the time the enemy reaches singapore it will be too late,they are right at our doorstep.its like russia declaring war on germany and the next day the russians are outside of berlin,by then the game is effectively over.if u live in a huge country like lets say china,u could shift the government inland and create a huge buffer between u and enemy forces....which is why the road to shanghai is a long way from taiping.

Times have changed, when the Japs invaded, the only truly indigenous race was the malays. Most of the Indians and Chinese were first generations who were either brought to Malaya for the railway, rubber, or tin mines. Although some had started families in malaya and had made money in malaya, their allegiances were not to the malaya country but to their homelands in China, India, etc. that is why they just relied on the Brits to protect them and did not do more to defend the country. The Japs knew all this and played the race card very well. They counted on the malay mistrust of the chinese economic invaders and exploiters of their land's mineral resources to get them to spy on the chinese and to act as policemen.

They used the Indians to also do the same thing and enticed them to join the INA. Today, malaysians are more patriotic and would resist any invaders going down the length of the peninsula. It would be much harder for such a small force to achieve what the japs did. In any case, Percival was a very poor general. He could have won against the Japs if he knew what to do. The scary thing is that our scholar generals are not half the man that Percival was.

first of all the Japs were invading ur homeland,u think the m&ds wouldnt stand up and fight?also the chinks shared a common hatred of the japs for what the japs have been doing to china since the first sino war in the 1890s,there were massive drives for the war effort against the japs in china in the second sino war.tan kah kee himself raised over 10 million for the war effort(200 million in today's dollars),also i dont think the chinese were first generations,the brits have been importing chinks for a long long time since william farquar days......i mean tan kah kee was already in singapore in 1890s,and he sure as hell wasnt the first chinks.....tan tock seng was in singapore in the 1850s...

Yes, but weapons are all controlled by the Brits and were not released to the population. So, how are the local population supposed to resist? That is why they never buried caches of weapons and ammo even when they knew they were defeated. Today, any invasion of malaysia and singapore, will find that large numbers of the population will have weapons in their hands. Especially in singapore.

Why should thailand mess around with japan? If they want free access for peace, might as well give it to them. Today, japan one of biggest investor in thsiland.
