PETALING JAYA: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has taken a swipe at the Government for allowing the sale of huge tracts of land for properties to be “built for foreigners”.

Believed to be aimed at investments from China, Dr Mahathir vowed that such a move would be reviewed should Pakatan Harapan take over Putrajaya.

Dr Mahathir, who is the Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) chairman, said this would only be**nefit foreigners and have little impact on locals.

The land occupied by these mega-rich foreigners, he said, would be fully developed, dotted with skyscrapers and further created in**equa*lity between Malaysians and foreigners.

“The sale of huge tracts of land to foreigners to build properties occupied by them will be reviewed by taking into consideration the long-term political impact on the country,” he said during the PPBM’s official launch at Stadium Melawati on Saturday night.

In his hour-long speech, Dr Mahathir did not mention China specifically but had previously raised concerns that companies from China were snapping up pro*perties in Johor.

Malaysia, he said, should not resort to the “easy way” of selling land to outsiders, adding that they must learn from history that such a move would only bring harm to their country in the long run.

“Our heritage is being sold and there will be nothing left for our grandchildren – to the point that they become destitute in their own country.

“Singapore was our territory but not now. If we think a little bit, this is happening again,” he said.

Dr Mahathir also claimed that the sale of land to foreigners taking place in Kuala Lumpur, Johor, Malacca and Penang was being classified as foreign direct investment (FDI).

“Selling parts of our territory to foreigners is not FDI. If selling our ancestral land is FDI, why don’t we sell off our country?

“Take a look at the number of foreigners who have bought pro*perties in Singapore. Are the Singaporeans in that tiny island republic worried? No, they are not and they, in fact, welcome affluent expatriates there. “Here, we have Dr Mahathir creat*ing fear, using race, just to fulfil his political motives. He’s not stupid, he’s just selfish and opportunistic,” he said. http://www.todayonline.com/world/as...ahathirs-fearmongering-over-chinese-investors

Are you sure that Sporeans are not worried

I see a concern about the rising costs of property. If Spore has a zero or negative population growth, why are property prices in Spore so high:confused:

We usually have good thoughts about the country in which we received our education.

In Dr Mahathir's case, it was the opposite.

I read somewhere that as a medical student in Singapore, he was once mistaken for a lowly delivery boy and was told to use the servants' entrance instead of the proper entrance. He never forgot the slight.......

Mahathir replies Johor Sultan on Forest City issue http://news.asiaone.com/news/malaysia/mahathir-replies-johor-sultan-forest-city-issue

Looking back to 1819, when Sultan Ali of Johor did not lease Singapore to the British, the Temenggong signed the lease. And look at Singapore today. A part of Johor is now a foreign country - well developed no doubt, but a foreign country. There will be in all more than a million foreigners living in JB Forest City and the 60 other deve*lopments. These new places will not become a foreign country but they will have an inordinate percentage of foreign people. If they stay long enough, they will be entitled to become citizens of Malaysia.

when foreigners buy land, there is not even an inflow of capital. Much of the money will be borrowed locally. And they can do their business with their own banks. Whatever foreign companies earn will be expatriated, and will result in outflow of capital. When the scheme is introduced wherein you can buy property in China and get one flat or house free in Malaysia, no profit will be made in Malaysia, therefore no taxes will be paid to the Malaysian Government. Let all transactions be transpa*rent. Publish all documents about the investments, the number of workers, their home countries, the buyers, the banks which finance and all expatriation of funds. Do this honestly. No hiding.

In the short to medium term, yes, it'll bring economic benefits. However, in the long term (over 20 years), the Bumis are going to lose out because they may eventually be outnumbered if the incumbent government is still in rule. Then you'll revert back to the Chinese grossly domineering over the Malays again, just like the last century.
