no falsifying nor misrepresenting. as usual you twist and turn again. first you said everyone gets detained, go to jail and has to serve ns. now you said that is after 2006. well, there have been cases after 2006 where fines without detention and or jailtime are being served, in fact as late as oct-2016. look up chidambaram brothers. prosecutors asking for jailtime overruled by judge. (you'll twist and turn again, but just give you enough rope for you to hang yourself.) by the way, i'm still in shock to hear about the $500 fine. in fact before they set foot in sg i advised them to prepare for detention at airport, that he may serve jailtime, that he may have to serve ns for 2 full years, to advise his u.s. employer about his long absence and he may have to quit his job, and the best they could wriggle out is $5000 to $10k fine plus ns service without jailtime. when they returned and told me it was only a $500 fine, i gasped and went into disbelief. it's true. don't need to fabricate this story. if you choose not to belief, it's up to you to research case with mindef. don't just outright deny, twist and turn just because your ego is hurt and credibility dashed. look at it positively that i'm giving you a tipoff about the $500 case. it's worth looking into and digging it out for your so called inside archives of wierd and seldom heard of cases.

The $500 fine is compounded, introduced in 2003 I think, for certain offences under the Enlistment Act / Regulations.

At that time, as a senior counsel with Harry elias, he can also work for the AG? That is some serious conflict and not happening. In addition, if he was still with the AG when he moved his kids to canada, he would have some explaining to do to his bosses at the AG, because he would have needed a police security check by the canadian consulate, The police would have checked him out before giving him the police check, and they would most certainly have tipped off the AG's office when such a senior lawyer has the Canadian consulate asking for a police check on him.

thank you very much. now it makes sense. in mitigation, the young chap is born in u.s., father registered him as sinkie citizen when he was less than a year old, he never step into sg until last december to settle his case, no sg nric, no sg passport; he travels with his u.s. passport; his brother's case was settled years ago without him going to sg as he registered for ns on time and sought deferment until 21 when he renounced successfully.

You conveniently put a short extract that was 10 years old which referred to previous 20years i.e. 30 years ago. I provided the link for the extract from Parliament and gave full context. You got caught out misrepresenting and making false claims.

Since the case of Melvyn Tan, the pianist that upset the country, there is no such thing as $500 fine for failing to serve NS and you are free to come and go. The fine is always a few thousand and jail sentence for defaulters and if they are below 40 years of age they still have to do NS. Where you are born makes no difference and whether you even entered Singapore makes no difference as you had the protection of the country as citizen.

Grandmother stories are plenty. Your is one of those.

It is not illegal for a public servant to apply for Police check to migrate. In fact the application ask you specify the reason for applying. Not everyone eventually migrate. However the authorities do refer sensitive post holders upwards and there is usually a "chat". Some are re-assigned but not demoted. SAF personnel while on overseas assignments such as Scottsdale, Perth etc who apply are sent back. Thought their post might not sensitive i.e. mechanics, engineers, etc, the SAF feels that they spent so much money and they cannot afford it becoming a trend.

Errol Foenander, former DJ1 and subsequently posted to AG and prosecuted Tharman under Official Secrets Act who had Cat A clearance as some of the testimony was under camera had applied for police check to migrate. After the case he retired and migrated.

in fact those days law faculty is dumping ground for those rejected by other courses or dept....... in fact for a couple of years there was NO first class hons............. even Justice Lai Kew Chye got second class hons only

If "defaulting on serving NS", you are referring to Enlistment for full-time NS (under Section 10 of the Enlistment Act), yes, it is not compoundable.
However, before we even talk about enlistment, one has to register for NS first (under Section 4), and then attend a medical examination (under Section 5). These are compoundable.

In the case eatshitndie mentioned, my guess is that the offence was for Registration.
