When the U.S. Navy deploys a battle fleet on exercises, it takes the security of its aircraft carriers very seriously indeed.

At least a dozen warships provide a physical guard while the technical wizardry of the world's only military superpower offers an invisible shield to detect and deter any intruders.

That is the theory. Or, rather, was the theory.

Song Class submarine

American military chiefs have been left dumbstruck by an undetected Chinese submarine popping up at the heart of a recent Pacific exercise and close to the vast U.S.S. Kitty Hawk - a 1,000ft supercarrier with 4,500 personnel on board.

By the time it surfaced the 160ft Song Class diesel-electric attack submarine is understood to have sailed within viable range for launching torpedoes or missiles at the carrier.

According to senior Nato officials the incident caused consternation in the U.S. Navy.

The Americans had no idea China's fast-growing submarine fleet had reached such a level of sophistication, or that it posed such a threat.

One Nato figure said the effect was "as big a shock as the Russians launching Sputnik" - a reference to the Soviet Union's first orbiting satellite in 1957 which marked the start of the space age.

The incident, which took place in the ocean between southern Japan and Taiwan, is a major embarrassment for the Pentagon.

The lone Chinese vessel slipped past at least a dozen other American warships which were supposed to protect the carrier from hostile aircraft or submarines.

And the rest of the costly defensive screen, which usually includes at least two U.S. submarines, was also apparently unable to detect it.

According to the Nato source, the encounter has forced a serious re-think of American and Nato naval strategy as commanders reconsider the level of threat from potentially hostile Chinese submarines.

It also led to tense diplomatic exchanges, with shaken American diplomats demanding to know why the submarine was "shadowing" the U.S. fleet while Beijing pleaded ignorance and dismissed the affair as coincidence.

Analysts believe Beijing was sending a message to America and the West demonstrating its rapidly-growing military capability to threaten foreign powers which try to interfere in its "backyard".

The People's Liberation Army Navy's submarine fleet includes at least two nuclear-missile launching vessels.

Its 13 Song Class submarines are extremely quiet and difficult to detect when running on electric motors.

Commodore Stephen Saunders, editor of Jane's Fighting Ships, and a former Royal Navy anti-submarine specialist, said the U.S. had paid relatively little attention to this form of warfare since the end of the Cold War.

He said: "It was certainly a wake-up call for the Americans.

"It would tie in with what we see the Chinese trying to do, which appears to be to deter the Americans from interfering or operating in their backyard, particularly in relation to Taiwan."

In January China carried a successful missile test, shooting down a satellite in orbit for the first time.

The Chinese Navy now has more diesel and nuclear attack submarines than America does, a US Navy admiral told lawmakers. Some of them are “fairly amazing” and Beijing is exploring new ways of projecting its power on the seas.

The Chinese are experimenting with new geographic location, length of missions and new weapons, Vice Admiral Joseph Mulloy, deputy chief of naval operations for capabilities and resources,toldthe House Armed Services Committee's Seapower Subcommittee on Wednesday.

“They may not be the same quality, but their submarine forces are growing at a tremendous rate. They now have more diesel and nuclear attack submarines than we have,” the admiral told the lawmakers. “They are producing some fairly amazing submarines and they are actually deploying them.”

The Chinese naval missions included at least three deployments into the Indian Ocean, Mulloy told the committee. They can also send strategic ballistic missile submarines on missions lasting for 95 days.

“We don't think they have nuclear weapons on board, but we've seen them producing the missiles and testing them,” the admiral said. "We know they are out experimenting and looking at operating and clearly want to be in this world of advanced submarines.”

The US Navy reported having 71 commissioned submarines. The Chinese, according to Pentagon estimates voiced last year, has 77 principal surface combatant ships, more than 60 submarines, 55 large and medium amphibious ships, and about 85 missile-equipped small combatants.

Despite having world largest defense budget, the US has been looking wearily at other nations building up their armed forces. China is investing heavily in new technology, seeking to project its military power in the Pacific region.

Washington has repeatedly criticized Beijing, saying it’s using its military to put leverage on other regional players, including US allies like Japan and South Korea, in territorial disputes.

After nearly 40 years, they gave up and thru a HK businessman who used much of his fortune to buy the Russian aircraft carrier. They are now copying that to build their second one.

Full scale Wars are seriously getting out of fashion. By the time China comes up to speed, the rest of the World would have given up on flaired pants and bell bottoms.

Chinese UN peacekeepers "abandon posts" as S. Sudan rebels raped aid workers

Although several departments within UNMISS received information about the attack shortly after it broke out, and a Quick Reaction Force (QRF) was ordered to respond, “no QRF ever tried to leave the UN House gates, however, with at least the Chinese and Ethiopian battalions refusing to go,” the report said.

The group added that although UNMISS secured assistance from South Sudanese authorities to help the QRF navigate the Sudan People’s Liberation Army positions on the road, “the contingents still were unwilling to try to intervene.”

At one civilian protection site in Juba, Chinese peacekeepers “abandoned their posts entirely withdrawing into the core UN House base,” the report revealed.

“With nowhere inside civilian protection site to shelter from gunfire and no protection from the peacekeepers, approximately 5,000 civilians fled over fences and barbed wire into the core UN House base. There, UNMISS forces struggled to manage the situation.

According to seven independent witness accounts, on the morning of July 12, UNMISS fired tear gas on the civilians with little or no warning.”

China invaded and KO Vietnam until there is no longer any significant Viet Troops to stop Chinese from taking their capitol city Hanoi. This was the stage at Liang Shan ???

China invasion of Vietnam was meant to be a limited punitive action and not a full scale invasion or to force Vietnam to withdraw it forces from Cambodia. If it a full scale invasion, China would need more troops than the 300k they deployed.

Many people saw China eventually withdrawal as a sign of defeat but that a misconception. Do remember that China also withdrew from captured territory despite winning the war against India in 1962.

PLA was too kind to Ah Neh in 1962. They released the Ah Neh POWs and Captured Arms without much sufferings, in fact had fed the Ah Neh POWs good meals.

孙立人活埋1200个日军


孙立人（1900-1990），抗日名将，字仲伦，安徽舒城人。1923年毕业于清华大学土木工程系，同年赴美留学，就读于印第安纳州普渡大学土木工程系，1924年毕业，获理学士学位。后又考入弗吉尼亚西点军校，攻读军事。1927年毕业，应邀游历欧洲，考察英、德、法、日等国 军事。1928年回国，在国民 党中央党务学校任中尉队长。1930年入陆海空军总司令部侍卫总队任上校副总队长。1932年调财政部税警总团任第二支队上校司令兼第4团团长。

1942年2月，中国组成远征军，下辖第5军、第6军和第66军。4月，孙立人率新38师于抵达缅甸，参加曼德勒会战。4月17日，西线英军步兵第1师及装甲第7旅被日军包围于仁安羌，粮尽弹缺，水源断绝，陷于绝境。孙立人奉史迪威之命亲率113团星夜驰援，18日凌晨向日军发起猛烈攻击，至午即攻克日军阵地，歼敌1个大队，解除了7千英军之围，并救出被日军俘虏的英军官兵、传教士和新闻记者5百余人。

仁安羌之战是中国远征军入缅后第一个胜仗，孙立人以不满1千的兵力，击退数倍于己的敌人，救出近10倍于己的友军，轰动全球。之后，蒋介石给他颁发了四等云麾勋章。罗斯福授予他"丰功"勋章。英王乔治六世则授予他"帝国司令"勋章，孙立人是第一个获得这种勋章的外籍将领。

1942年10月24日，新编第38师112团开始攻击前进，29日即占领新平洋。当被俘的日军被带到师长孙立人将军的面前时，孙立人厌恶地皱皱眉头，不假思索地命令参谋："这些***的！你去审一下，凡是到过中国的，一律就地正法。今后都这样办。"命令被迅速执行。日军第18师团曾在中国战场上犯下累累罪行，这些俘虏手上沾满中国人的鲜血，当然在劫难逃。

结果，缅甸会战中投降的1200名倭寇士兵以及倭寇军官，统统被孙将军以活埋的方式杀掉。唯一生还的倭寇是一个叫山田进一的下士。因为经过审讯孙将军得知他是台湾人。

活埋1200名倭寇的事件是二次大战中比较大的杀降事件，此事被美国报纸披露震惊了世界，美国方面大为恼火，认为这将使日军此后更加顽强的抵抗。然而其结果却是倭寇一旦闻得新一军的威名，皆望风逃窜，1945年春，新一军兵不雪刃占领仰光，缅甸全境光复！孙立人将军名震全球，成为二战中与张自忠将军齐名享有世界声誉的中国将领。
