SINGAPORE: SingPost has appointed Paul William Coutts to the position of Group Chief Executive Officer and non-independent director effective Jun 1, 2017, ending a year-long search for a new CEO.
The post has been vacant since Dr Wolfgang Baier resigned a year ago.
The appointment has received all required regulatory approvals, SingPost said.

Mr Coutts, 60, joins SingPost from Toll Global Forwarding, one of the five divisions in the Toll Group, where he was CEO since February 2013 in a global role based in Singapore. He has more than 20 years of experience in C-suite positions at major global logistics and postal companies, SingPost said.
Mr Simon Israel, chairman of SingPost said of Mr Coutts: "Given his seniority and the experience he brings from an extensive logistics and postal career including global leadership roles, Paul is well positioned to provide overall leadership to the transformation of the Group, integrate SingPost's eCommerce logistics platforms and build out a globally competitive business.”
Mr Israel has acknowledged that SingPost's reputation and share price have suffered from a very public crisis surrounding its board governance. In the past year, chairman Lim Ho Kee and director Keith Tay exited the company, as well as deputy chairman Goh Yeow Tin. Professor Low Teck Seng, who was to take over from Mr Lim, also turned down the appointment as chairman-designate.
The Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority also launched a probe into SingPost over possible breaches of the Companies Act. The company has since adopted recommendations for management succession, conflicts of interest and disclosures, and processes for mergers and acquisitions (M&A) and market disclosures after a corporate governance review.

Think about this. You are chosen at a young age for "stardom". Ordinary mortals in the organization make way for you. Yes, you have to battle other "stars" for leading roles, but there are really no shortage of parts, so unless you do something stupid , you will not crash out. Oh, and all parts are generously paid. Here's the catch, you are starring in the neighbourhood theatre, grand as it is. Throw you on the international stage. You have two disadvantages. One, you are not prepared for people who do not play by the rules you know. Two, you think you are better than you are. Aren't you a stunning success so far ? No a recipe for great success in a real business.

In the space of a year, Singapore-based logistics group SingPost has lost almost its entire top management team. News just came out that its COO, Sascha Hower, has resigned to “pursue new opportunities overseas.” He will leave in August.

This development is unremarkable on its own. But consider these:

  • Its CFO, Daniel Phua, announced in July 2015 that he will leave the group to “pursue other career aspirations.”
  • The CEO, Wolfgang Baier, announced in December 2015 that he has also resigned. Deputy chairman Goh Yeow Tin was appointed as executive chairman for 12 months.
  • SingPost said in the same month that it failed to disclose board director Keith Tay’s interest in an acquisition deal.
  • SingPost chairman Lim Ho Kee stepped down in April after his intended successor declined to take up the post. Another successor was eventually found.
  • Keith Tay stepped down in May.
  • The deadline to finalize its deal with Alibaba was pushed back for the third time, to October this year.
  • This month, it introduced new policies to govern its board directors.
  • Goh Yeow Tin to step down in the same month just half a year into his tenure as executive chairman, in order to “devote more time to his other commitments.” He holds directorships in 10 other firms.
SingPost has not yet announced a new CEO. Despite these changes, the group posted positive results in financial year 2015, a sign that its shift from a mail carrier to a logistics company was working. Its annual revenue hit US$840 million, up 25 percent year-on-year. Net profit jumped 58 percent to US$181 million.
These upheavals, however, could put a spanner in SingPost’s progress and cause shareholders to be jittery. Listed on the Singapore Exchange, its share price took a dive after Wolfgang Baier announced his resignation.
