SINGAPORE: A 37-year-old man was killed on Monday morning (Dec 19) after another driver allegedly went against the flow of traffic on the Ayer Rajah Expressway (AYE) in the direction of Tuas.

The incident, which occurred near Tuas West Road, caused a multi-vehicle collision involving four cars, a motorcycle and a bus, according to the police.

The man was trapped in the driver’s seat of his car, and had to be extricated by Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) personnel using hydraulic rescue tools. He was pronounced dead at the scene.


Channel NewsAsia understands that the accident took place after the other driver made a U-turn and went against the flow of traffic.

A 53-year-old man has been arrested for causing death by a rash act, the police said, adding that investigations are ongoing.

The penalty for causing death by a rash act is up to five years in prison, a fine, or both.


SCDF said it was alerted to the accident at about 8am, and dispatched four ambulances, a fire engine, a Red Rhino, two fire bikes and a support vehicle.

Two men and two women, aged between 34 and 53, were taken to National University Hospital with unknown injuries. The SCDF said it alerted the hospital to be on standby to receive those injured.

When police asked why they went against traffic he replied because he was God.

The 37-year-old man who died in the accident along Ayer Rajah Expressway (AYE) near Tuas West Road on Monday morning (19 December) has been identified as a media personality, according to a report by Today.

Liong Kuo Hwa has appeared in local films, TV programmes and commercials, according to his personal website.

A 53-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly making a U-turn and driving against the flow of traffic along the AYE towards Tuas Checkpoint on Monday, killing a man and injuring four others, police said. The injured were conveyed to the National University Hospital.

A Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) spokesman said that the victim was trapped in the driver’s seat of his car and was extricated with the aid of hydraulic rescue tools. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Today report said Liong – also known as Jackie – was travelling with his wife in his Toyota Vios when the accident occurred. She was among the four injured who were conveyed to NUH.

“I am in hospital. I think I am not in the position to talk so much … I am being attended to for my injuries,” said Liong’s wife, according to the report.

Between 2008 and this year, Liong appeared in local and regional feature films including “Mooncake” and “Pickles”, local TV shows including “Code of Law”, “Point of Entry”, “C.L.I.F” and “Just for Laughs Asia”, TV commercials and print advertisements, according to his website. He was also an emcee at various corporate events.

Yee Chang Kang, 44, Director of Shooting Gallery Asia, who has worked with Liong in various commercials, told Yahoo Singapore that he was shocked and saddened by Liong’s sudden passing.

“Jackie has always been a wonderful guy to work with. He took directions well and was a great actor. He’s always giving his best on set and I have never seen him grumble during our shoots. Always put on a smiling face to cheer everyone up.

“It is really shocking to hear about his passing on social media. I am very sad. He was still very young. Too young to have gone away just like that,” Yee said.

what kind of a fucked up law is this? people died and this is not considered manslaughter but another tragic accident? somewhere there's a fine line between willfully creating mayhem that will cause loss of lives and limbs and unintended foolishness that leads to an accident. this one is the former, and the law in sg treats it as the latter. sg laws do not have adequate deterrence to prevent this kind of willful mayhem. but they have very powerful and enforceable laws against activists holding signs in the streets (signs selling sex posing as massage are exempt). truly fucked up. criminals should feel safer in sg.

UPDATE: A 53-year-old man has been arrested for a road traffic accident on the Ayer Rajah Expressway (AYE), said the police in a statement on Monday (Dec 19) night. The incident involved four cars, one motorcycle and one private bus along AYE (Tuas) before the underpass leading to Tuas checkpoint.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect was travelling along AYE towards Tuas checkpoint where he was believed to have made a U-turn and drove against the flow of traffic.

He then collided into several vehicles, which resulted in the death of a 37-year-old man. The victim was pronounced dead by paramedics at the scene. Four others were conveyed to the National University Hospital (NUH).


The Traffic Police also appealed to the public not to circulate photos or videos of the deceased out of respect for his family.

Anyone convicted of the offence of a rash act causing death can be jailed up to five years, fined, or both.

Police investigations are ongoing.

An accident on the Ayer Rajah Expressway (AYE) on Monday (Dec 19) morning left one dead and three others injured.

Two contributors sent videos of the accident, which occurred at about 8am, to citizen journalism website Stomp.


According to an eye-witness, the accident that left a trail of destruction on the expressway was caused by a driver of a Mercedes who allegedly drove 120km against the flow of traffic.


In the videos, a severely damaged silver-coloured car can be seen next to a wall of the AYE. The car's bonnet was completely smashed. A few metres away, there was a fallen motorcycle beside a stationary car surrounded by debris.

A woman was lying in front of the motorcycle. She looked to be conscious, and was being tended to by a man. The video then shows a flipped car on the road shoulder. Debris was strewn all over the vehicle as other motorists rushed to check on what had happened.

Further along the expressway, Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) personnel can be seen attending to a black-coloured car that was also involved in the accident. A fourth car also had its bonnet severely damaged following the carnage on the expressway. Walls behind the vehicle were also destroyed.

The short story is that he snapped out of the sudden. He is a relative of an acquaintance. His son n wife were also in the car when he did and they were so shocked that they couldn't do shit. Why he snapped I dunno, super stressed perhaps.

For the whole journey towards the Tuas Checkpoint, his wife had been nagging him and telling him how to drive. When he went into the motorcycle lane, his wife yelled at him , calling him a stupid driver. He was fuming inside and tried to figure out how to get back on to the car lane. He finally managed to get onto the car lane , but the wife reprimanded him , " Don't go into the bus lane this time ! ". He was boiling , but he managed to keep quiet and kept on driving , making sure that he would not drive into the bus lane.

All of sudden, the wife exclaimed," Shit! I forgot to bring all our passports ! Left them on the dining table. Hey ! Old man, go back now to get the passports ! ".

He snapped.
