Customers book MBS hotel room for $70 due to website glitch

The New Paper
Wednesday, Dec 07, 2016

Does a night's stay at the Marina Bay Sands (MBS) for $70 sound too good to be true? It is.

Several people who had booked rooms at that price were left disappointed after MBS informed them via e-mail that the price was an error.

Instead, it offered them the rooms at $450 per night with a $100 credit on their final bill.

Mr Joel Tan, 25, a project manager, is angry at the increased cost of his reservation. He said he found the deal on MBS' website on Nov 28. He immediately booked a stay for March 31 to April 7. He received a confirmation e-mailthe same day but was informed on Monday about the change in price.

"I am disappointed that MBS is not honouring its obligations. It has to take responsibility for the mistake," said Mr Tan.

He told The New Paper he had booked the room for friends who are flying here in March.

He has yet to let them know about the change in price as he is waiting to see if MBS will do anything else.

Another customer, Mr Clarence Chen, 28, had booked a room from March 31 to April 7 for his family.

Mr Chen said he was disappointed when he received an e-mail about the new price.

He said: "I am now thinking of selecting another place for my staycation because of the way MBS tried to resolve and downplay its error in pricing."

When contacted by The New Paper, an MBS spokesman said the room rate error "arose in connection with a promotion for stays ending March 31, 2017".

"Only guests who booked through this promotional page and planned to arrive on 31 March were affected," said the spokesman.

She said no credit cards were charged upon booking. MBS is investigating the cause of the error, and it apologises for the inconvenience to its guests.

The spokesman added that MBS' terms and conditions state that the hotel has the right to correct the rate or cancel a reservation (after directly contacting the person) if the rate has been incorrectly posted.

The Consumers Association of Singapore (Case) told TNP that as payment was not made at the time of booking, the hotel is likely to dispute the validity of the contract. It also noted that in MBS' terms and conditions, any reservation is subject to its confirmation.

NEGOTIATE

But Case added that consumers can attempt to negotiate for an amicable resolution since confirmation of the booking was received by the consumer.

In a separate case in December 2014, Singapore Airlines allowed about 400 passengers to fly business class although they had bought tickets at economy-class prices due to a pricing error.

U know why mbs don't honoured it, because the sinkies are running the show. That is how sinkies behave.

Stay away from sinkies and sinkieland and all will be good.

Good riddance! Cheapskates in the hotel will cheapen the experience for other guests! Furthermore, it not likely cheapskates will be able to afford being repeat customers.

In US,they would probably honour it as its free promotion if it comes in the papers. No need to advertise. But then, MBS probably running at almost 100% occupancy, so they can be arrogant on who gets to stay.

I doubt they will be running at 100% because it's still 3 months to go. But yeah.. they should use this to generate good publicity. The number of cock ups that have been reported is embarrassing. The CIO should be sacked.

Whoever in marketing should be sacked.
It's not worth the bad publicity.

In the US they would look at it as an oppurtunity for free positive publicity. The hotel industry is a service industry & the hotel would not be losing anything tangible by giving the cheaper rate. They already have the staff in place & I doubt occupancy is a problem because Spore is facing economic problems

Obviously the hotel is run by bean counters. The same type of person like Ms Saw who caused all the problems at SMRT.

Sporeans who would pay $450 per night in Spore are idiots. You can stay at some very nice hotels in Thailand, Indonesian, Malaysia, ... AND have more things to do than in Spore:o

aiyah. not 100% true. it's actually half truth.

http://loyaltytraveler.boardingarea.com/2012/08/20/why-i-dont-publish-hotel-rate-mistakes/

Why I do not publish hotel mistake rates or Best Rate Guarantee claims.

1. Hotel rate mistakes are far less likely to be honored than airline mistake fares.

In my observations obvious hotel mistake rates generally are not honored. Only occasionally is the mistake rate honored or a higher rate, and generally still a good bargain rate, is offered to those who booked the mistake fare.

The main difference I think that makes airline mistake fares more likely to be honored is ticket prices fluctuate wildly among airlines and consumers have a valid reason not to know what the fair market value of a plane ticket is on any given day. One day an airfare sale may offer a ticket for $200 that goes up to $600 the next day. The consumer is used to seeing really low rates for airline sale fares and it can be difficult to tell a mistake fare from a sale fare with airlines.

Hotel rate mistake fares are much easier to detect. Particularly when the mistakes are for a room like the W San Francisco 31st floor WOW suite at $15 per night when a standard room at the hotel is over $200 per night. That was a mistake rate I picked up in 2004 when the rate was supposed to be $1,500 per night for the WOW suite.

The W San Francisco is one hotel mistake rate I booked. In the years since I have been writing Loyalty Traveler blog my attitude to mistake fares with hotels has changed.

It has been about five years since I flew my last airline mistake fare with a $500 Delta Business Class roundtrip ticket from Buenos Aires to New York.

The amount of money I have wasted on airline tickets getting gouged by ticket change fees leaves me with a different attitude for airline mistake fares.

I am more lenient in my ethics about airline mistake fares. Airline nonrefundable tickets are the only way the average traveler can afford to fly. Airline tickets that allow changes are exorbitantly priced. Once you have booked an airline ticket, you have usually made a nonrefundable purchase. Airlines collect significant revenue in fees charged for changes to nonrefundable tickets. The airline ticketing model is a consumer-unfriendly model of sales.

In contrast, hotels have low cost flexible reservation policies that do not force the consumer to book slightly lower prepaid, nonrefundable rates. I don’t have the same urge to “stick it” to hotels in the way the airlines generate that feeling within me through their system of pricing and price-fixing airline fares.

In Spore there are no consumer protection laws. We only have the political body known as CASE. As I've saif there is no consumer protection in Spore:wink:

With social media people can now easily vent their anger in public. Savvy businesses know this & are mindful of how they handle customer complaints.

aiyah again. in u.s. hotels can tell you to f.o. if you think they will honor their mistakes. what has that got to do with consumer protection? a fare mistake is never under consumer protection.

MBS is a Spore hotel & I didn't want to comment on the US because it is in a different country. However I've been to places like Las Vegas where the prices vary depending on time of year, day of the week, & time of day.

i'm also responding to post #11 because you mentioned u.s. hotels. las vegas of course have various rates including cheap rates, but depending on hotel. bellagio and a few other hotels will never drop their price below $300 for fear of losing their high class and exclusive branding. if these top hotels mistakenly publish $69, they will not honor it. big difference between intentional and honest mistake.

Vegas serves a very large market, people who live there & international visitors. There are also many richie rich who wouldn't give a second thought about spending $$$. When I drove down there on a weekend, I experienced this 1st hand how popular the place was & there were zero hotel rooms available.

However it is different in Spore because you won't find many locals who would be interested in paying $450/night. I also doubt that there are that many rich tourists coming to Spore? The casino is probably what sustains their business.
