Minister Chan Chun Sing subsidise labour costs of shipping companies
written by Admin December 2, 2016

Through the Singapore Organisation of Seamen (SOS) union under the National Trade Union Congress (NTUC), Minister of State and NTUC chief Chan Chun Sing said that he will commit S$3 million over two years to subsidise the labour costs by paying in part for the accommodation, medical and training needs of seafarer employees.

This is second generous government subsidy offered by NTUC after a S$300,000 commitment to subsidise the hotel room costs from NTUC’s Singapore Maritime Officers’ Union.

Minister Chan Chun Sing made the announcement to subsidise the shipping corporations last night (Dec 1) at the Resorts World Convention Centre:

“The Government, the industry and the labour movement will do what we can to not only preserve the status of Singapore as a global maritime hub, but more importantly, also grow our capabilities.”

Singapore’s maritime industry is currently in a downturn and its prospects is diminishing as China announced a S$14 billion investment in Malacca, aiming to compete with Singapore as a trading port.

Psa says good times ahead still building mega port in Tuas

It is to accommodate China's newly minted warship in years to come. I think we get Supreme leader Xi to spend a night at the new stronghold in Singapore. That will appease the leader. In turn, he might get 1000 Terrex from us.

Offer us this Meg deal. What is 100 Terrex to 1000 when China need more arms then USA.

Very few singaporeans are sailors nowadays, so when they say they will pay for the training, accommodation and medical for these seafarers, they are saying they will pay for the Pinoys, Indians, etc FT sailors that work for these shipping companies. The fucking PAP is really a traitor to singaporeans. it seems every FT gets a better deal then a sinkie.

Agree, why use our tax payers monies to pay for foreigners!
The subsidy should only be given to local seafarers-again will WP MP's open their mouth in Parliament?
