  • SINGAPORE: Lim Chu Kang Road will be converted into a runway from Thursday (Nov 10) to Monday, as part of the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) exercise to increase its aircraft take-off and landing capabilit

Codenamed Exercise Torrent, the alternate runway exercise was last conducted in 2008, and is now in its seventh edition.
The conversion of Lim Chu Kang Road will take about 48 hours and involves 110 RSAF servicemen. Public road fixtures such as lamp posts, traffic lights, bus stops, road signs and guard rails will be temporarily removed.

BG Gan Siow Huang, commander of Air Power Generation Command (APGC) and exercise director, said Exercise Torrent has been challenging internally and externally.
"It takes a lot of cooperation within the RSAF - with the ground crew and the air crew. Externally, for this exercise, we also have to work very closely with national agencies such as the Land Transport Authority, the National Environment Agency and Singapore Police Force," she said.
She added that the RSAF also had to engage farm businesses in the vicinity so as to "minimise disruption".
RSAF's F-15SG aircraft will be making their debut in this year's exercise. Other jets featured include the F-16C/Ds and F-16D+s. These fighter jets will simultaneously take off and land using both Lim Chu Kang Road and the Tengah Air Base runway.

A simulated emergency using hook wire engagement by a Mobile Arrestor Gear (MAG) on the F16 jets will also be conducted. The eight-tonne MAG is a mechanical system that rapidly decelerates an aircraft after it touches down. It can be used for short or temporary runways or in situations where the aircraft has difficulty stopping on its own due to faults.

ME6 Jerediah Ong, Air Force engineer and member of the team overseeing the conversion of the road said they also had to focus on the removal of all foreign objects on the road, such as stones and nails, as these pose risks to the engines of the aircraft.
"Up north (of Lim Chu Kang Road), there are actually a few recycling plants, recycling locations. So, the big trucks go by and they do drop items on the road in the process," he said.
Lim Chu Kang Road will be closed until 6pm on Monday, to facilitate the road transformation and exercise.

Hardly news. It was part of the plan to keep Tengah airbase operational in times of war even if it lost a runway. The first exercise was way back in the early 90s.

Aren't the majority of RSAF jets basde overseas?

So by the time they get back to Spore there won't be much left of our air bases. Even if you can land on the roads, where will they go to refuel & rearm?

Tengah has underground hangers.

48 hours in today's internet age is like eternity!

In WW2, how many days did the Jap overrun SG on foot and bicycles?

And 1 bomb, be it planted by terrorist prior to war in that road, the run way will be rendered unusable.

Another nice wayang to show off muscles of air force. Practical in real need is another story some other day.

Lim Chu Kang is a decoy. We will land on the NS highway. At t-5 our red berets will have infiltrated mudland defence w strategic cups of Teh Tarik and able to secure a stretch of the highway necc for landing.

48 hours? The country would be bombed many times by enemies already. why can't they automated these farking things? have to manually remove them instead of flipping a switch, everything folds down by itself in seconds? Bunch of brainless SAF retard scholars.

Yep, its all wayang. At least, last time when they used ECP, all they had to do was removed the big potted plants in the middle of the road. Now have to remove lighting, railings, bus stops, etc. how fucking stupid. MINDEF never talks to LTA, i supposed. Is it too difficult to design the road without putting railings in there? How about a bus stand instead of a bus stop? In 48 hours, every potential 5th column spy from Malaysia, PRC, Indonesia, etc will know that you are prepping Lim Chu Kang road to take aircraft landings.

MINDEF donch talk to LTA mah, each of them run by scholar generals more interested in protecting their own turf then to co-ordinate on national defence. Wait long long for WP to raise this in parliament.

If 5 PRC spies working here as bus drivers or lorry drivers, drive their vehicles thru the road blocks and ram thru, then set their vehicles on fire in the middle of the runway, it will put it out of action for hours if not days. Or did MINDEF not think of that?

This is a Harrier. Used mostly in marines. I build a model from Airfix in the 70's.

Believe it's still in combat operation, mostly from aircraft carriers.

Btw, what happen to the ECP section that's for such scenario? Abandoned already or forgotten?

The potted plants in the middle of the highway are still there,
but they are surrounded by a low corrugated metal fence. This is the long and straight stretch near the airport. I supposed this stretch can still be used by the removal of these plants. No railings or bus stops need to be removed. But the trees have over growned the sides of the road and need to be trimmed back. The ECP was tested out for A-4 Skyhawk and F-5E operations. But since these 2 aircraft (A-4 is retired) and not very commonly used, there is not much that can it can be used for. I think for the take off run of a fully loaded F-16, the ECP is too short. A loaded F-15SG needs and an even longer runway. Additionally, Lim Chu Kang road is adjacent to Tengah airbase where the F-16 and F-15s are based. After landing, they can be towed to the airbase and service and re-armed if need be. Changi is now essentially a civilian facility. A F-16 or F-15 landing there still need to have its support brought up from tengah.
