HAWKERS are a scourge and greedy bastards in this country!

Since the GST raise, then the scare of rice price increase which never happened, hawkers had been raising its food prices and NEVER come down.

Now, for a bowl of mee pok, it can be either $3, $3.50, $3.80, $4.00, $4.50, $4.80.

Now, for a cup of kopi-O, it can be 70c, 80c, 90c, $1, $1.10, $1.20, $1.50

Kopitiam outlets across Sinkiepore is one of the most sinister culprits of this raise in food prices that never comes down in these times of recession.

To the hawkers, where got recession? They are smiling and making loads of money, at the expense of the GST raise and last year's rice price hike scare.

I believe hawker prices are pegged to rental, GST, petrol, gas, water and electricity prices. When all these come down, hawker prices will come down.

landlords for retail and F&B places are not reducing their rent. that might be the main problem. wealthy land owners still control most of us.

Why are things and rental so much cheaper only 3/4 mile away in Malaysia. Why are things so much cheaper in Indonesia, Philiphinnes, Thailand, Vietnam, China, IndoChina?

What is average wage of Malaysian? Or Filipino? Or Indonesia? US$100 can employ 10 maids in Indonesia. A single maid here earns more than US$150. Doctors in Phillipines prefer to come to Singapore to work as nurses becaue they earn much more. Of course their cost is cheaper. What talking you?

My family owns a hawker stall and I can tell you its not as simple as U think.

First off Rental and utilities cost a bomb. The typical electrical bill for one of those stalls easily exceeds 1K+ - 2K add rent to that and the number of helpers they need to hire, thats a lot of money. And we all know rentals can only go up but never goes down.

The price of the ingredients have been steadily going up

Prices of other things like Rubber Bands, Disposable Chopsticks, Plastic Bags have more then doubled over the last couple of years. A lot of pple do not take think much of this items but these things add to the cost of each and every item they sell

Hawkers usually do not rise their prices to take advantage of the situation, many of them do so because they have not choice. Many of them are afraid of losing regulars(who are the ones keeping them in business) just because they increase the price by a lousy $0.10. A lot of them have seen dipping profits for years before they dare rise prices. Of cause there will always be pple trying to take advantage but the vast majority of them only do it because they have to.

Everyone is a target these days.

Hawker Centre food high:

1) whack MIW for GST
2) whack business men who rent the stalls
3) whack the farmers for escalating raw material cost
4) whack the diner for being cheap
5) whack the FT that clears the plates later for robbing singaporean jobs
6) whack the low pay of these jobs

Some of them under pressure from high rental, which points us back to our good old greedy gov.

BTW, there's a coffee stall I know still sell coffee at 70 cents, I go there all the time to support him.

Hawkers are not the problem. Few days back, KOPITIAM bidded more than $500K per month for a plot in Sengkang or punggol to build a wet market and hawker center.
That is more than twice the amount of the 2nd highest bidder.

So inevitably, the tenants will have to pay the rentals and pass it down to the customers.

The only solution is to boycott these places, making the landlord suffer so that they will not bid so high in future.
