To think that these shopping malls create jobs mostly for foreigners-Pinoys in retail/PRC's in food outlets and Malaysian in others -I do not pity them.
However at the macro-economic level it is a wastage/misallocation of resources as these billions could be channelled to other industries that create jobs for locals and widen the economic base of the economy.

Yes, pap must boost purchasing power.

Increasing taxes and rentals without increase workers is a deadly recipe for business because Singaporeans dont have money to buy anything

Cathay Mall is the mall that also houses Cathay Cinema.

When it reopened, there were at least 2 interesting tenants that drew an interesting mix of customers: a dance school / club and of course, Cathay Restaurant. Both closed down because the greedy landlords jacked up their rents to unsustainable levels.

Rent-seeking Cathay seemed to be ignorant of the fact that these tenants drew in customers for their other shops.

Cathay is that forsaken mall next to Plaza Sinkie??
Why is that at CBD?

Stagnany domestic earning power cannot match ever increasing merchandise prices, malls can just wait and die if they think they can depend on tourists to come here and buy all these overpriced imports.

Likewise, anchor tenants in many shopping malls have quit their malls because rental have been increased to unsustainable levels. John Littles quit Tiong Bahru, etc

The last Gramophone outlet was also located there. The landlords of Spore are really dumb. What is the point of increasing rents until you start losing your tenants:confused:

Wouldn't it be better to collect less rent but be fully occupied, so that more customers would visit the malls?

Gramophone and borders is dead internationally and bankrupt, why blame it on the reits?blame it on the cheapo sinkies that prefer to obtain their entertainment illegally from pirated vcds and torrent, and prefer korean dramas than the books and arts.

If you go to MBK in Bangkok there are stores selling original DVDs, music CDs,.. etc. DVDs are also available in department store in Siam Paragon. In JB the Popular bookstore there carries music CDs, VCDs, DVDs,.. They also sell them in the Spore stores but only a very limited number when you compare to the Popular store in Malaysia.

In Spore I think the only stores you find in the malls still selling CDs/DVDs is Poh Kim?

So it is not that CDs & DVDs are going out of fashion but rather whether there is enough profit margin to be made in selling them. If you visit Orchard Road the store there are mostly selling branded clothes & accessories with high mark ups. You need the high markup to cover the rentals in Spore.

John Little has quit Jurong Point as well, I heard they might also exit Plaza Sing.

Yes, John Little closed its stores at Specialist Centre, Tiong Bahru, Jurong Point, White Sands, Marina Square.

A huge sales is now on at its store at Plaza Sing. This is likely to be a closing down sale before it quits Singapore.

No thanks to the silly and unwise PAP, many big stores are leaving Singapore. Will Isetan and Metro quit too?

well those countries arent as advanced as singapore,we mustn't mistaken singapore as the template for the rest of the world.thailand's internet penetration rate is only 29 percent and not all of it is high speed or unlimited bandwidth.so vcds and dvds are still highly relevant in their society just like it was in singapore ten, fifteen years ago.nowadays most of our entertainment come off the internet or cable, and our internet is fast enough to support streaming at 1080 dpi.

The internet n online shopping trend is not unique only to singapore. The only way to counter is to have uniqueness n using internet to leverage. Good n services for example still have to be delivered n consumed on site. There is only so much food panda can do esp it cannot replicate ambience n service.

Fashion for example - physical shops can be for testing or trying before consumer purchase online. Or it can be for alteration or after sales purpose.

Your argument about Internet penetration doesn't apply.
You can find pirated VCDs, DVDs for 150 baht in MBK & it maybe even be cheaper if you are a local & know about the local stores in Thailand.

The fact is that Stores selling genuine CDs, VCDs, DVDs, .... can coexist alongside stores selling pirated CD/DVDs. However in Spore even the legitimate music stores cannot exist because of the high rentals.. In Spore the problem is with the licensing & distribution costs. High rentals is part of the distribution costs.

Why do you think the PAP made it illegal to bring in CDs, DVDs,... from Malaysia:confused: It's the same reason for the 3/4 tank rule for Spore cars going to JB. It's all about money. Same reason rentals are so high in Spore.
