SINGAPORE - The director of a company has been charged for allegedly collecting $105,235 in kickbacks from 20 foreign workers, the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) said on Tuesday (Oct 11).

Ng Boon Cheng, 55, the managing director of Lian Lee Wooden Case Maker, allegedly allowed the company to deduct money from the workers' salaries between January 2011 and October 2015, as a condition for their continued employment with the company.

The collection of kickbacks or other benefits as a condition or financial guarantee for employment is prohibited under the Employment of Foreign Manpower Act.

If convicted, Ng could be fined up to $30,000, or jailed for up to two years, or both per offence. MOM may also permanently ban him from employing foreign workers in future.

MOM added that it has recovered the total amount collected and returned the monies to the affected foreign workers.
