How can a Prime Minister of a country owing its success to political stability over 50 years now say that the younger members of cabinet will decide among themselves who will be the next PeeM? before his father stepped down, every one already knew way in advance that Wooden will take over. And when wooden was stepping down everyone already knew way in advance that gay loong will take over. But now, when he steps down, we have no idea who will be the one? This introduces a huge element of risk and uncertainty to the whole country. What message does it send to the investment community and to the political leaders of other countries when they do not know who they will be dealing with in the future?
This is worrying on many fronts. Its tells the world that no single member of the cabinet has distinguished himself from the others. that they are uniformly all so bad that he himself cannot decide who to anoint as his successor. If he does not know who is to be the successor, then how does he spend time grooming them? He himself was groomed for many years by his father and then by Wooden. Everyone knew that he will take over eventually and effort and time was spend on him preparing him for that day. But by saying he does not know who will be the next leader, and even worse, abdicating responsibility for that choice, then who will he groom? Will the chosen one take over the post of PeeM cold turkey? With no experience at all? The logical step would be to identify who is the next potential leader and then groom them by making them DPM. He has 2 of them. Tharm and Teo. If they are not going to succeed him, then why are they DPM? Why not give the DPM to one or 2 of the younger cabinet ministers so that they can have some experience. The lack of preparation and leadership by him on this matter borders on criminal negligence.
My other big worry is that now, he has basically thrown a big juicy bone to the dogs and ask then to fight each other over it. Over the next 5 years until the next GE, all the cabinet ministers will be jockeying for position and backstabbing each other to be the next PeeM. will they have time for any work to be done? They will be busy lobbying for themselves, and busy forming alliances and allegiances. Instead of creating an atmosphere of co-operation and teamwork, gay Loong will foster one of suspicion, mistrust, and deceitfulness. Many people in the world say that Singapore is run like a big company, if that is so, which CEO will tell his Senior management team to decide amongst themselves who will be the next CEO when he retires. U can count out Ong and Ng because they are the junior members of cabinet, having been elected only last year. Keechiu was elected 2 elections ago in 2011, as was Tan Chuan Jin, and Lawrence Wong. So by default, it appears that the next PeeM will come from one of these 3. Not keechiu I think, as this moron seems to me like an intellectual lightweight. It will be a low day to see the Prime ministership held by an intellectual heavyweight such as LKY just 2 generations ago, degenerate into a post held by an autistic like Keechiu.
