[h=1]Singapore confirms 41 cases of locally transmitted Zika virus[/h]Singapore has confirmed 41 cases of locally transmitted Zika virus, mostly among foreign construction workers, and said it expected more cases to be identified.
All but seven of those infected had fully recovered, the Health Ministry and the National Environment Agency said in a statement on Sunday. The seven remain in hospital.
On Saturday, authorities confirmed a 47-year-old Malaysian woman living in southeastern Singapore as the city-state's first case of a local transmission of the virus.

Zika, carried by some mosquitoes, was detected in Brazil last year and has since spread across the Americas. The virus poses a risk to pregnant women because it can cause severe birth defects. It has been linked in Brazil to more than 1,600 cases of microcephaly, where babies are born with small heads.
Singaporean authorities said they tested 124 people, primarily foreign construction workers employed on a site in the same part of Singapore. That site has been ordered to halt work, and workers' dormitories are being inspected. Seventy-eight people tested negative and five cases were pending. Thirty-four patients had fully recovered.
Four Singaporean men had developed symptoms of the virus in the past week and were hospitalized on Saturday. It was not clear where the foreign workers were from or when their cases were detected. Singapore hosts a large contingent of workers from the Asian subcontinent.
None of those infected had traveled recently to Zika-affected areas. "This confirms that local transmission of Zika virus infection has taken place," the statement said.

The ministry "cannot rule out further community transmission since some of those tested positive also live or work in other parts of Singapore," the statement said. "We expect to identify more positive cases."

The World Health Organization said in a statement on Sunday that it did not know "which lineage of Zika is circulating" or "what the level of population immunity is to this lineage of Zika in Asia."
"It is important for countries to remain vigilant through surveillance for cases, to continue vector control, to inform people about Zika and how they can protect themselves, and to have the health system ready to supply the services needed to prevent and manage Zika and its consequences," the group told Reuters.
Singapore, a major regional financial center and busy transit hub, which maintains a constant vigil against the mosquito-borne dengue virus, reported its first case of the Zika virus in May, brought in by a middle-aged man who had been to Brazil.

CLEANUP

Singapore deployed about 200 NEA officers to clean drains and spray insecticide in the mainly residential area early on Sunday to counter mosquito breeding grounds, and volunteers and contractors handed out leaflets and insect repellent.
All medical services in Singapore had been alerted "to be extra vigilant" and immediately report any Zika-associated symptoms to the health ministry.
Singapore said there were "ongoing local transmission" cases in Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam. Other countries in the region to have detected the Zika virus since 2013 include Bangladesh, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Maldives and the Philippines, according to the WHO.
[h=3]Also In Health News[/h]
Malaysia said on Sunday it stepped up surveillance at main transit points with Singapore - handing out leaflets on Zika prevention and having paramedics ready to handle visitors with potential symptoms of the virus.

In Thailand, where close to 100 cases of Zika have been recorded across 10 provinces this year, the Department of Disease Control was screening athletes returning from the Olympic Games in Brazil, but was not otherwise changing its prevention measures.

"Every country in this region has Zika transmission cases," said Prasert Thongcharoen, an adviser to the DDC. "Thailand has, however, managed to contain the problem through early detection."
A Foreign Ministry spokesman said Indonesia was "following developments". Oskar Pribadi, a Health Ministry official, said there had been no recent Zika cases in the country.
Vietnam has to date reported three cases of locally transmitted Zika infection.
The current strain of Zika sweeping through Latin America and the Caribbean originated in Asia, where people may have built up greater immunity.

Explanation is needed on why -

1 Sudden huge number?
2 Why the delay in reporting?
3 What exactly are they doing to prevent further rise?

Are having another "SGH lapses" and "MRT trains fear of panic late report" again?:mad:

Zika is a minor issue and hardly newsworthy. The Olympics have come and gone and nobody died and nobody's head shrunk.

Get over it.

Good one!
Let's wait until every one come and gone. Nathan has really gone, hope that it was not Tony and Disgraceful that brought the "virus" from Rio with the Olympic.

http://theindependent.sg/opposition...-up-in-timing-of-zika-announcement/Opposition politician alleges cover-up in timing of Zika announcement
By The Independent - August 28, 2016 7610

Secretary-General of the People’s Power Party, Mr Goh Meng Seng, said in his Facebook that the 41 cases of locally-transmitted Zika virus is “apparently a cover-up”. He alleged that it is no coincidence that the Singapore Government declared its first locally contracted case soon after Hong Kong declared its first Zika case on 25 Aug. The woman was eventually tested negative for the virus and was discharged from the hospital the day after.

Mr Goh contested against the Health Minister and his team in Chua Chu Kang constituency in the last General Election. He challenged the Minister, Mr Gan Kim Yong, to a debate on healthcare policies which Mr Gan declined.

In saying that he was surprised by how fast the 1 Zika case became 41 cases overnight, Mr Goh suggested that the Singapore Government covered up the outbreak because it did not want to showcase Singapore as a worse-off place than Hong Kong, which it considers its competitor. He said that important information of public interests are only secondary to this Government.

In fronting the media this afternoon to announce the 40 more Zika cases discovered since yesterday, Mr Gan rubbished any talk of cover-up.

http://theindependent.sg/wp-prompt-public-notification-of-zika-important/WP: Prompt public notification of Zika important
By The Independent - August 28, 2016 3138

The following is a media release by the Workers’ Party.

The Workers’ Party notes with concern the confirmation of 41 cases of locally transmitted Zika virus infection. We express our solidarity with all persons affected by the Zika virus and we wish all patients a speedy recovery.

Prompt public notification of Zika cases is important so that members of the public in the affected areas can take the necessary precautions and so that stakeholders can take vector control measures.

As a matter of process improvement and learning, we call on the government to clarify the time-line for public notification of these cases as follows.

1. For all of the 41 cases of positive Zika infection transmitted locally, was it the case that all were not tested positive until after 27 August, which was when the news was released about the 47-year old Malaysian female patient who tested positive?

2. Was the same criteria in terms of number of tests and degree of evidence applied to the case of the one Zika patient notified to the public on 27 August as for the other 40 cases notified today, on 28 August?

All residents of Singapore need the same degree of care and protection from Zika. We would also like to express our strongest support to public sector workers undertaking vector control.

By the way, there is an on-going war between Salma Khalik, the Sr health correspondent and MOH since she challenge over the failure to identify the people over the worst contamination in Singapore's history in SGH which led to the death of 8 patients and lack of knowledge of the affair by the Minister over many months. MOH has already issued a statement in its Facebook over the "misreporting" by SPH over the private doctor who levied 2 sets of charges for the same visit.

MOH, SPH and the establishment has to come clean on the timelines. So far 2 political parties, one independent (TISG) and few netizens have expressed interest and bewilderment over the timelines which seemed to have been "missed" by the prostitute press within 24 hrs.

Some Zika Cases Detected

Some new Zika cases have been detected yesterday and today. The patients are now quarantined at CDC, TTSH.

Will pap come clean and let us know how many cases there are and not conceal them under the guise that they dont want to alarm Singaporeans by revealing the truth

PAP has been coming up with lame excuses when they decide to hide the truth

Zika is a minor illness. Influenza is a far more serious disease.

Only 20% of those infected actually get sick. The other 80% just go about their normal lives without a care in the world.

For those who are affected the symptoms are mild. Slight fever, rashes, joint pain and Conjuntivitis are all that you have to worry about.

3. Zika
4. SMRT train crack issue

I don't see why singaporeans need to know the gory details about such matters.

All countries have problems but Singapore is fortunate enough to have a competent and capable government that will fix the issues as they arise. There is no need to upset the population with unnecessary details as this would be counter productive.

My dad faced serious financial issues during Singapore's formative years but he kept this to himself so that I could concentrate on my studies and my future. It was only years later that I found out how close we came to bankruptcy. I appreciate the fact that he withheld the information and I know he had my best interests at heart.

"Does anyone in the Worker's Party read? Or understand what they read?
These are the important parts of the timeline regarding Zika.
Aug 26: The woman, the only female among all 41 cases to date, visited the same GP and was referred to the CDC.
Aug 27: The woman was confirmed by the CDC to have the Zika virus infection. She was warded. As she was assessed to have been infected in Singapore, NEA was notified and they commenced vector control (anti-mosquito breeding) operations. Members of the woman's household were screened. Tests were conducted on 123 people who were recently or currently symptomatic. This includes 118 construction workers of the nearby construction site.
Aug 28: MOH and NEA hold a press briefing during which it is announced that 41 locally transmitted Zika cases have been identified, with 34 patients making a full recovery. The remaining seven are recovering in hospital. The authorities say more cases are likely.
Finally, 4 in 5 do not have symptoms. Of the 1 in 5, if symptoms are mild, it is difficult to tell if it's Zika unless tested.
Politicising something as serious as Zika is really low. Come on."

"No cover up.
Our healthcare professionals working as fast as they can.
I understand lab professionals worked through the night last night to verify the cases. As soon as results were out, MOH notified the public promptly.
Please share MOS Chee Hong Tat 徐芳达 's post."

"Some people have been wondering why the number of locally transmitted #Zika cases increased from 1 case on 27 Aug to 41 cases on 28 Aug. A few even asked if there had been attempts to cover up these cases. This is certainly not true.

My colleagues in Ministry of Health and National Environment Agency - NEA have been working hard over the past few days to provide timely updates on the latest developments and to coordinate with residents, community leaders and healthcare professionals on the follow-up actions. This includes colleagues from the laboratories who are doing confirmation tests for suspected cases - they have been working till way past midnight to complete the tests, so that the results can be announced in a timely manner.

Channel NewsAsia has published the timeline of events, starting from the first notification of a possible cluster of viral illnesses by a GP clinic in the Aljunied area to MOH on 22 Aug, to when a patient saw a GP with symptoms fitting Zika on 26 Aug, to confirmation of the 41 cases on 28 Aug (http://bit.Iy/2bPjx2W). You can see from the timeline that MOH and NEA have been proactive in engaging the different stakeholders to identify possible cases, conducting screening and testing to identify the confirmed cases, and promptly announcing such cases to the public once they have been confirmed. Our healthcare institutions are also taking care of the Zika patients to help them recover as soon as possible.

As Zika is generally a mild disease and 80% of patients do not show symptoms, it is possible that more people may have been infected by the virus but they are not aware. To reduce the risk of further spread of Zika in #Singapore, we need to work together to prevent mosquito breeding in our homes and protect ourselves from mosquito bites by applying insect repellent regularly. -- Hong Tat"

"Hi, just to clarify... Since 34 out of 41 cases are already recovering, does this not mean that hey have already been identified prior to 28th Aug?"

"No. Prior to 27 October, no reason to believe that the fever and other mild symptoms they had was Zika. Once 27 Aug Patient A was discovered, MOH went back to test all cases with similar symptoms and discovered that indeed some of these mild fever cases were Zika. By the time they were tested, already recovered."

"You know how LKY said Singaporeans are more educated but not more intelligent ? After looking at the comments on FB, maybe he is right again.
Zika usually has mild or no symptoms. If you only have a fever, you go to a doctor for fever, the doctor gives you medicine for a fever. You won't get tested for Zika unless you exhibit other symptoms or have gone to a known Zika infected area.
After the one case yesterday, the authorities went back and tested people who had some of the symptoms who lived around the area, and discovered that some indeed had Zika but the majority have recovered.
There is no cover up.
It could be many more have Zika, given that often there are NO symptoms.
Regardless, that's the scary part of Zika. One could have it and don't even know it.
I predict that the birth rate is going to drop further until a vaccine is developed, given that Zika's greatest risk is to pregnant women. People may put off getting pregnant."

Mistakes will always be made. This has nothing to do with incompetence. It is all about being human. We are not a perfect species and things will go wrong as long as the sun rises.

The PAP has a track record of getting things fixed. Just relax and let them do their job.

Why is it so hard to explain these in clear english. None of the official press organisation can write a decent article to save their lives. The epicentre is the construction site at 60 Sim Drive where 90% of the cases are linked. No basic journalist approach - questions such as what is there, which construction site, why that construction site etc. If they let people run around like headless chickens the govt has only itself to blame. LWL is right - its the least transparent of the 3 govts whether intentional or otherwise.
