The 21-year-old, Singapore's only medallist at the Rio Games, claimed the 100m butterfly gold and the $1 million award from the Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC) that comes with it, the first Singapore athlete to do so. Of this, 20 per cent will be given to the SSA for training and development, as stipulated by the SNOC.

Schooling will get about $661,650 after taxes.

$661k doesn't even cover all the investment made. Schooling should just swim for the US and reap the dough from endorsements there. A few million bucks could be easily earned.

Stay in another country to train and win the medal, get the reward locally, then go back to stay in another country.

When they give you a million dollars, it will be headline everywhere. But when they take back 20% and tax, it will be in very fine print. Plus the bragging rights and to parade you around in open-top bus to show you as their prize prey.

Every 5 years this happens and 70% falls for it. It just shows it works brilliantly every time.

I think Joseph doesn't mind as long as he is richer than many 70% sinkies. At age of 21 with half a million in his bank, he has nothing to lose. Once he graduated from America, his future is stunning and he can work in America and live there for good. I don't think he will marry a sinky. Singapore is too small a pond for him to swim, he need an ocean.

Yeah, am sure JS do not mind and just play along with them for the moments of being fretted over, and get some money from them.

Look at other medalists, who earns big money by endorsements, and sure JS will remain in US, probably take citizenship and earn as much as he can, thereafter be a swimming coach there.

You don't really need to win an olympic medal to emigrate successfully. I have many relatives & friends who did so & predict that many Sporeans will continue to do so with LHL & the PAP in charge. I don't see much hope in Spore if you don't have $ or family connections.

I think he will come back to do NS but as a white horse. Maybe after the Tokyo Olympics .

This has already been mentioned he won't get the full million. He needs to donate 20% to the swimming assosciation and taxed a certain percentage so he's left with around 600k at around 60-70% of themillion

More likely only when he is in his 50's as mediacorpse's actor for swimming coach in 3rd remake of 'flying fish'....

Why? Remember, from now on (early 20s) he will be in his prime $$$$ earning period, with Tokyo 2020 coming along and just maybe 2024...cheepee mediacorpse will not be willing and able to match his fat product endorsements....that is, if he is lucky and sensible enough to be able to skip slipping down the celebrity drug debauchery path....

....so if he lucky, he will be able to milk $$$$ for the next 15 - 20 years , give and take 5 years....lazing around after swimming retirement, enjoy life and by the 50s, just enough for him to remember that he once came from Singapore. Finally, make a nostalgia trip back....and cheepee mediacorpse or successor company will just be in time to snag him for an appearance.....

Singapore is just too small and without the potential $$$$ opportunities to hold him, whatever he and his parents are sprouting about serving ns ...... :*:
