Are you implying that previous NDRs actually had substance?

When the late LKY spoke during the National Day rally...there was substance & anything that came out of his mouth & carried out later, had SUBSTANTIAL impact on the direction of Singapore, not nowadays, we have a "captain" of a boat...trying to navigate through CHARTERED waters & having a well educated, well trained crew, who is constantly checking the instruction manuals & do not have clue, where it should be heading
...

THAT WAS THE SUBSTANCE back then....the telly at home was always on, when LKY spoke.....:roll eyes: it is always off, when I had my own home & telly.....whenever "mee siam mai hum" or any spoke....the hand automatically reaches for the OFF button ......that is having no substance or had in any?

Frankly I think they are indeed exhausted. They have been chasing their tails on so many issues that they have lost controls of the organs of State. We get so much publicity on AHTC, SMT, foreigners, loss of jobs for locals, lift breakdowns etc not because they are all important but the failure of the govt to steer the ship.

Can you imagine the PM wondering every night if Temasek has become such a hot potato and how he can handle it without upsetting members of his own family and keeping a straight face during cabinet meetings. No human can take such a strain and this man has the best medical care.

When old man delivered his NDR, you can tell that he was full of adrenalin and every comment he made and every point he made however controversial just increased his adrenalin.

Look at the NDR yesterday - it was flogging a dead horse - no ideas at all. Look at the main points - he wants Singaporeans to count our blessings. WTF. We are in a hole the size of it we never had before.

Precisely, they think they are they are best. You should count your blessings. Don't fucking blame us ( PAP ) when things go wrong. Count YOUR BLESSINGS. CCB . We have downgraded to count your blessings.

Yes, LKY had substance. Whatever he said will be done. Civil servants dare not make mistakes. SG grew and prospered under LKY. Singaporeans had good life under LKY. That's why LKY was respected.

Now under LHL. Misdeeds and mistakes are condoned. Civil servants get away eith poor performance and mistakes. This is due to poor leadership. That's why SG is in such sorry state.

Just look at the bad management of YOG. I am sure VB's head will roll under LKY

Just look at the National Stadium. I am quite sure, VB's head will roll under LKY

Just look Victoria Hall dustbin. I am sure, Grace Fu's head will roll.

Just look at mismanagement of SMRT. I am sure RL's head will roll under LKY.

Because VB's head didnt roll for YOG's mismanagement and RL's head didnt roll for SMRT's mismanagement, we get the badly designed National Stadium and Victoria dustbin saga.

LHL's lack of leadership has bred poor performance in the ministries. Will we see more cock-ups like the National Stadium, and wastage of public funds like Victoria Hall dustbin?

They should be counting their blessings, that they have us....who toil with our BLOOD, SWEAT & TEARS working hard to pay the heavy indirect taxes to substantiate their well beings....have he ever thanked us? the answer is NO....so, does he expect us to wish him well?...still that bloody, arrogant..p@#^$# b@#%%$# beneath that veneer of geniality that is being portrayed. "a Leopard never changes its spots"....don't be fooled.

Hold the pap accountable for the mistakes they commit. A mistake is a mistake whether honest or not. A dishonest mistake must result in prosecution

LHL is blessed to have such a submissive population. Yet, that submissiveness reveals LHL's incompetence

We have a family friend that helm a ministry that was once LKY pet project....that person has now retired, you can see the effort & the impact of the work done by that ministry decades ago & we are reaping that benefit today....& this came from LKY vision & steadfastness in getting things done...."head rolled" when things go wrong...not that I like LKY....but...a "spade is a spade".

I agree. During LKY's era. Ministry Heads were diligent and proficient unlike the many mistakes we see nowadays. PM must strike fear in the ministries. But a blur PM cant do much because he is not competent

No check and balances on TH

The check & balances was LKY....who had people in MOF, MAS etc...who were damn thorough on the job but the downside was, he created an "immortality" or 'gods' that, no one could ever question or bring them to task, when things failed...that was one of the things I don't like about him. Remember LKY was once asked about, GIC & TH?....what was his answer?

How could we have any Check & balances, when the same people that does the checking is being fed by the same people who employed them to do the checking...they are either, "married to" ( meritocracy?), connected to ...how could they be INDEPENDENT.

In the past, we have people doing the job of checking & balancing without any fear or favour....

I don't miss LKY...but misses some of the better things he did for the country...the 'fruit' has fallen far from the 'tree' & that "FRUIT"...is a far cry from the "tree" that produces it.....

The downside of LKY legacy is, we face a lot of his policies that gave us problems today, like , population....for example.

Old man was what you would called a benevolent dictator with great vision, an effective bastard, an economic tyrant or in kind words a shrewd operator. One thing however is very clear - anything he does has favoured the family first and the question of personal and family sacrifice was never even a factor. He shaped laws to keep him in power and he had qualms to play dirty to remain in power. Crushing an opponent no matter how reasonable and sincere that person was was not a problem.

Bear in mind that he stayed in the Istana from 1959 to 2015 - a total of 55 years rent free even after he stepped down as PM and then held no official portfolios. He made sure that it had all luxuries that you needed including a beautiful swimming pool, a golf course etc. He also entertained privately in the Istana premises for family, friends, relatives etc all at state expenses.

To show that he was not taking advantage of the state, very early in his PM tenure he continued to sleep (not stay) in his house and have weekend meals with his children. This also accorded him privacy from prying eyes.

Herod the Great was also a benevolent dictator. Under him, Jerusalem become a thriving metropolis. He upgraded the modest second temple so that it rivaled the great Temple of Solomon. Paranoid with losing power, he deployed an army of spies to keep close watch on everyone. All threats to his power, family included, were ruthlessly removed. When he heard a potential rival had been born in Bethlehem, he ordered all children under the age of two to be eliminated.

When he died, Jerusalem was a sparkling jewel of a city. There was a however a huge income divide. The wealthy Jews lived mainly in Jerusalem. They looked down upon the poor Jews who lived in provincial areas like Nazareth. With their great wealth and beautiful city, the elite who lived in Jerusalem felt safe and secure. They made careful plans so that their wealth would be passed down from generation to generation.

It all turned out to be a vain dream of hubris.

So there is a parallel in history.

Yes.

LKY spoke with conviction and from his heart. LKY's NDR was always full of substance and singaporeans looked forward to it. It's best the SG reconsiders the need to try to imitate US' State of the Union speech

The Old Man never looked like an old man at his NDRs, even to his last one, he was full of life. That guy last night was old.
