India's PV Sindhu has assured the country of another medal at the Rio Olympics and this time it is at least a silver medal. The tall and lanky girl from Hyderabad beat Japanese Nozomi Okuhara 21-19 21-10 in the semi-finals of the women's singles badminton event at the Summer Games.
She has now become the first Indian to make the final of a badminton event in the country's Olympic history. She takes on World No 1 Carolina Marin of Spain in the summit clash in a bid to bring India's first gold medal in Rio Olympics.
Okuhara, current World No 6 came into the match against Sindhu with a better head-to-head record of 3-1 in her favour.
[h=3]Playing her first Olympics, Sindhu beat three higher-ranked opponents en route a final berth - 8th ranked Tai Tzu-Ying of Taipei in the Round of 16, World No 2 Wang Yihan 2-0 in the quarters and now 6th ranked Okuhara in semis. But on the big day it was Sindhu who used her height and reach to good effect over the diminutive Japanese.
Last shuttler to win an Olympic medal for India was Saina Nehwal, who clinched bronze at the 2012 London Games.
