I recall reading a report of someone turning down scholarships in the past because her daddy felt he could afford the fees.

More importantly, he felt that there were many others who deserve the scholarship more, given the $$$ problems in their families.

I am quite sure it was father of He Ting Ru.

I know of folks like that.
Their kids were brilliant enough for scholarship but chose to self fund forgoing the prestige.
Rich folks but with social consciousness....something vile pappies do not have.
Good exanple is Rear Admirer Teo Chee Hean.....family is among one of the richest here but greedy fuck grabbed both prez and saf scholarships. Utterly shameless.

There are more $1 million dollar AStar scholarships given out to foreigners than sinkees. Those scholarships fund tertiary studies from undergraduate to Post Doc in any top universities. Two requirements from the foreigners ....become naturalized sinkee after first degree and serve a bond of 5 years. Sweet heart deal for foreigners.

And B grade only can apply right? No need AAA grade like locals.

Schooling and his family has done enough for the country.
He should not feel obliged to stay in Sg.
He should go Anywhere he wants to and be happy.
Although I'll prefer he stay but If he chooses to leave its a big slap on pappies fuckfaces. I like

Yes he is not obliged to stay in SG.

You raise an interesting point and there is a corollary to this too. Not only are the PAP giving free scholarships to shit useless FTs, they themselves take it too. Lets face it, does Lee Hsien Loong and Li Hongyi, both from the richest family in singapore really need a scholarship to study overseas? How many MIW and their cronies from rich families took scholarships from the govt? Lets face it, scholarships are not unlimited resources. they only give out a restricted number every year. So when one of these already rich fucks take one up, there is one less for a really needy student. There is no means test for scholarships like in many countries.

I agree.
Bond or without bond, those from the financially rich should decline the scholarship after it has been awarded to them, and indicate that they will pass on it to allow another financially needy student to have the privilege to study overseas.

Back then the govt gives out scholarships to our 'poorer' neighbors as form of goodwill / help. I believe there were no other agendas and locals were also not impacted as the scholarships were just a handful and under a different program.
And our neighbors have since become not so poor anymore....
Vile pappies then started giving out to the tiongs and nehs and all sundry with the agenda these foreigners will come work and settle down in Sg. Quotas for scholarships to locals shrank too when priority were given to foreigners.
This is a traitor govt.

In the late 1970's and early 1980's, the Singapore government was giving many scholarships to attract the "smarter" Malaysian Chinese to attend SU and NUS.
I believe that after graduation from university, a majority of those Malaysians stayed in Singapore.

20% of University places are reserved for Malaysians across all faculties. That quota is sacred and cannot be touched even if Singaporeans have higher grades. Then there is the Asean scholarships to do the A levels and hostels are provided. When they graduate, the move on to the PIPs scheme where they can rent 3 room flats for peppercorn rent. The majority remain. Circa 1993, the Elite Admin service was open to foreign fresh graduates and PR but they are required to become citizens.

For Malaysian Chinese school students who complete O levels they can sit for entrance exams and be admitted to course in the Science faculty at the age of 17. This cohort however is very small.

With new citizens coming in with 2 years of gaining PR, this whole topic is rapidly becoming moot. The first batches of new citizens have already acquired OMS nearly 10 years ago.

Holy shit 20% for mudlanders! And they study for free some more right? We have been feeding them with school, jobs and HDB and yet smug and haughty like hell and expect everyone to accommodate them even in Spore and full fledged barbarians when in their home country like my barbarian MALAYSIAN CHINESE MISTRESS neighbours. Not a hint of grace, only take for granted all kindness and give to others only their shameful shit of slander and lies and litter and dog poo and their used CONDOM.

What is the rationale for reserving 20% of the university places for Malaysians?

It will be Schooling's free choice to decide which country he chooses when he turns 21. What is it that attracts him to Singapore? He' can't smoke pot here, whereas in the US, it is slowly becoming legalized. BTW, so what if he decides on the USA? His friends in the USA will be scratching their heads if he chose Peesai!

Cheers!

To tap into non-bumi talent which naturally is looking for an outlet due to discrimination. It did serve us well for many years. For the first 25 years, Singapore faced a serious shortage of labour and talent to many our rapidly growing economy, factories etc. We even had to bus Malaysians from JB daily to man factories in AMK, Woodlands etc. Close to 90% of renovation workers, carpenters, workshop mechanics etc were Malaysians. For non-tertiary educated Malaysians, the policy for getting Singapore citizenship at the that time was 10 years.

The policy flaw was not accommodating more Singaporeans when the Malaysians entered with lower A level qualifications.

Very sad that the SG government implemented such an unfair and illogical policy to allow Malaysians with lower "A" level qualifications (to SG universities),
which probably resulted in SG citizens to incur much higher expenses to send their children overseas.

I can guarantee you that the USOC and the INS will paka paka and offer Schooling a Green Card followed by a quick US shitizenship right about now. They need to replace Phelps and he is the ideal candidate. The INS has a fast track system for extraordinary ability.

It was mooted by LKY from his close lifelong friendship with Penang born Hon Sui Sen since they were teenagers.

Hon Sui Sen was a nice genuine religious catholic man. He would have been turning in his grave if he saw what Old fart and his son did to the country. It was interesting that HSS met Albert Winsemius when he was posted to the UN and requested Winsemius to lead the UN mission to Singapore. the rest is history as they say.

Many might want Schooling to emigrate and give the pappies tight slap.
But sorry to spoil the party. Even if schooling goes and the US wants him for their swim team.
It will take at least 3 years after he becomes a US citizen.....that's because he has represented another country before internationally. That's as per fina rules. 3 years is a lifetime in competitive swimming.
