SINGAPORE — Indonesian authorities have arrested six terror suspects for allegedly trying to hit Marina Bay with a rocket they had planned to fire from Batam, according to local media reports.

The suspects, aged 19 to 46, were arrested on Friday morning (Aug 5) by Special Detachment 88, Indonesia's elite counter-terrorism squad. The group is said to have links to Bahrun Naim, the alleged mastermind behind the attacks in central Jakarta earlier this year.

According to an online report by Batam Pos, the suspects were arrested at various locations across Batam, including the Mediterranean Housing Block FF1 Batam Centre, Complex Masyeba, Cluster Sakura Botania, Carina Park Complex, and the Komplek Taman Indah Batuaji.

“It is true that we are holding six people,” a senior police official, Boy Rafli Amar, was quoted saying by Batam Pos.

The report identified the six suspects as Gigih Rahmat Dewa, 31, Trio Syafrido, 46, Eka Saputra, 35, Tarmidzi, Hadi Gusti Yanda, 20, and M Tegar Sucianto, 19. All of them work at a fabric factory except Trio, who is reportedly a bank executive. An Indonesian TV station identified Gigih as the ring leader.

One of Gigih's neighbour said he got married four years ago and did not show signs of suspicious behaviour. “He rarely goes out, in fact, we don’t know anything about them. So far the couple has been good,” the neighbor was quoted saying by Batam Pos.

On Jan 14, the bomb-and-gun assault at a Jakarta shopping plaza killed eight people, including four attackers, and injured more than 20 others.

Bahrun Naim, an Indonesian militant, is well-known to security agencies. Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam said in March that Bahrun Naim was suspected of encouraging attacks in Singapore.

Indonesian national police chief Badrodin Haiti has also named him as one of the region’s core leaders in the pro-IS network.

If they can build a homemade rocket to cover the distance they would not be terrorists but Nasa scientists instead

And if bankers and sewers can build, launch and successfully hit with a home made rocket, well pigs can really fly on their own too.

Sources say large quantities of coca-cola and mentos were found stockpiled at their secret rocket lab

which part of marina bay were they planning to hit? Also how much explosives did their rocket contain? Suffice to say assuming they actually managed to successfully hit marina bay it would have probably hit the seawater and went out with a loud bang like fizzle like a firecracker which would have caught the attention of a few ppl with their boats parker there for a few mins before they went back to fishing.

SINGAPORE: Indonesian authorities have arrested six terror suspects, including the group leader who had plans to fire a rocket from Batam in an attack on Singapore’s Marina Bay.

The men, aged between 19 and 46, were arrested at various locations across Batam. A stash of weapons was found at one of the locations, a housing complex, according to Indonesian media reports.

The six were allegedly from terrorist group KGR@Katibah GR - whose ringleader Gigih Rahmat Dewa, 31, is said to be behind the plot to attack Marina Bay.

The other five suspects are: Trio Syafrido, 46, a bank employee, and factory workers Eka Saputra, 35; Tarmidzi, 21; Hadi Gusti Yanda, 20; and M Tegar Sucianto, 19. The group is suspected of harbouring two Uighurs, according to Indonesian police.

“Yes, there were indeed plans for the attack. But the plans did not materialise,” Indonesian national police spokesperson Boy Rafli Amar was quoted in reports as saying.

The plan to fire the rocket missile from Batam was hatched with the help of Bahrun Naim, an Indonesian fighting for Islamic State in Syria, reports said. Bahrun is believed to be one of the masterminds of an attack in January in central Jakarta, in which eight people were killed including the four attackers.

Gigih Rahmat is suspected of receiving and channelling funds for radical activities sourced from Bahrun.

Mr Boy Rafli said police had yet to determine the motive behind the plot or when the suspects were planning to launch the attack with rocket missiles - evidence of which has not been found.

The suspects are currently being investigated at special counter-terrorism squad Densus 88's headquarters for their involvement in Islamic State's Indonesian terror network.

SINGAPORE "AWARE" OF TERROR PLOT

In response to media queries, Singapore’s Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said it is aware of the attack plan and has been working with the Indonesian authorities since the discovery of the plot.

“Our security agencies have been coordinating closely with the Indonesian authorities since the discovery of this attack plot, to monitor the activities of the group and to apprehend those involved. We are grateful for the good cooperation by the Indonesian authorities and their actions to apprehend the group,” the ministry said.

The Singapore police and other agencies have stepped up inland and border security measures in response to this threat and the “prevailing security situation”, MHA added.

“This development highlights the seriousness of the terrorism threat to Singapore, and the importance of the SGSecure national movement. The public is advised to remain vigilant.”

Our mat neighbours in Putrajaya have been supporting the Thai Muslim and Phillippine Moro insurgencies for decades. Malaysia has been playing a very dangerous game for a long time. We are fortunate Johore has a relatively liberal Muslim Sultan. But this may change. For Indonesia, all we need is a conservative like Erdogan to come to power and we will be facing a hard time with Islamic expansion. This is why it is important to have China around our neighbourhood. The US and Indonesian government have a history of working together solely for Indonesian nationalism. If Indonesia wants to reclaim Singapore then I won't hold my breath waiting for US support. They will more likely not attempt to stop the Indonesians. The Chinese are our only hope.

Sultan got rich because of us. If supporting the extreme Islamist can make him richer, he will have moved on to lend the support.

This Johore Sultan is like your Practical business man. Only thing he is a Malay.

Same thing can be said of the Sultan of Brunei. He has now turned into a very conservative Muslim and has served Shariah Law to the entire country. One could argue that he finally realized it was Islam that first allowed him onto the throne and it's the best way for him to stay on the throne. There is always another side to look at, from. I do feel the current Johore family is quite liberal but you never know when they may turn into a taliban and as they age this always becomes a possibility.

It is just to save face lah.

You can tell that MHA was caught off guard, embarrassed and had to issue a statement to save face.

That's why sinkapore shows NO appreciation to the Indons for nabbing these terrorists.

Help me get around this - which missle are they aiming to shoot ? RPG ? I don't think there is a missle in Indon army that can reach us from Batam.
Next they will foil an attempt to shoot ICBM from Jakarta to Singapore

Maybe RPG fired at 45 degrees facing MBS. No hit MBS will also hit one of the tankers mooring between Batam and Singapore. Then you have the modern day Red Cliff and haze for months. Teehee!
