I want to dispel some of your misconceptions about Nathan.

5) The whole Laju incident is really fishy. There is an untold hidden story there. Nathan was made to look like the hero, but actually, the 4 hostages were exchanged for 13 govt hostages, of which nathan was one. Technically, the other 12 should get equal credit. In the first place, u never negotiate with terrorists. He did. And secondly, you don't give the terrorist new 13 hostages for 4 old one. How stupid is that? nathan only agree to go as a hostage after 4 commandoes were disguised as part of the 13 hostages, they were basically his bodyguard. They had the opportunuty to overpower the terrorist after the terrorists surrendered their weapons. Why would the 13 of them get on a plane with the terrorists and fly all the way to Kuwait City and release them there and then fly back to Singapore. Shit, just shoot them dead after they surrendered the weapons. What is the problem? Really a fishy business.

He was a make- believed hero. The terrorists were already disarmed before Nathan and his gang took over and the risk was minimal. The only person whom I think deserved a medal was the driver of the mini bus who drove the hostages and terrorists to police HQ and then to the airport because the terrorists were still armed during that stage.

The govt was aware that his work with the Japanese could be a burden which was why they keep emphasized that he worked for the Japanese 'civilian police' instead of police.

1. If Nathan truly really "served" Singapore and put the nation before self ( as the PAP government and PAP controlled MSM would have us believe) than what about the huge pay packet he received from us, the tax payers, for 12 years? Interesting to know what his estate is worth? Mind you this chap never worked in the private sector. Compare the value of his estate to say Goh Keng Swee, Rajaratnam, Hon Sui Sen, Toh Chin Chye, Devan Nair, George Boggars, Andrew Chew, Sim Kee Boon and I think we may be in for a bit of a shock!

2. PAP government and the PAP controlled MSM would have us believe that Nathan was a "people's president" and much loved by the people. More like an UNELECTED elected president if you ask me!

3. Nathan was one of Harry's most loyal, trusted and obedient followers and probably Harry's biggest apologist as well. To Nathan, Harry could do no wrong.

4. Curious to notice in Nathan's family obituary in today's ST that not only is his daughter married to a chinese but his son's "partner" appears to be chinese as well.

That's how the real world works and it's sad but it's true.

Traitors are heaped honors to no end while patriots (most of them) get unmarked graves and the most famous war hero (Lim Bo Seng) in WW II gets a shitty grave at McRitchie.

TS is too kind to term him an enigma.
Nathan isn't any mystery.....he's an outright traitor dog through and through.

Your description of him as the "make-believe hero" is probably the best.

I have no idea why and what made the establishment and the press to make him a hero of sorts. I am aware that in SID they never actually accomplished anything significant. In fact their Malaysian counterparts as late as the 1990s compromised SAF personnel including a ranking individual and PA to the chief.

I think one could conclude that he wanted to be accepted by the people as their much loved President. He would every week be at the East Park in the mornings to meet and greet people. Ironically his minders were not aware the spot he always goes to is where the mineral water bottle holding gays gather. He also took up Mandarin in his first year and told the public this but it did not amount to much. His grand kids went to SAP schools, another LKY trait.

Nathan was the lucky beneficiary of an attempt by the govt to make standing for elections financially rewarding as no one with the appropriate qualifications was prepared to step forward after what they did to Ong Teng Cheong. Potential candidates knew that despite all the rhetoric it was a rubber stamp. I recall that was 2 massive hikes in pay to hit the sweet spot.

Nathan early start was a result of his close friendship with Tay Seow Huah when both served in Ministry of Labour as equals. Tay the father of Simon Tay, was trusted by Old Man and was the main lynchpin against the Barisan and he ran the Intelligence Services as well as being perm sec. . It was Tay that recommended and brought in Nathan and he was went to Mindef. When Tay died young Old man relied on Nathan. The person who can throw more light behind Nathan's ascendency and clout is our "Recalcitrant" blogger who with Tay and Nathan controlled Intelligence.

The son is a bigger mystery and interesting has even partnered Mahathir's youngest son in a JV.

And yes, Nathan made more than anyone from the public purse with no exceptions and the returns are well well below par. PE was Old Man's folly and Nathan was his trusted lap dog in it after OTC debacle.

ps. Nathan apparently was involved in match matching where Shanmugam's second wife is concerned.

The fainting incident at the National Day Rally and the passing of Nathan occurred unusually close to one another. Perhaps LHL should take some time to reflect on his actions and his life. Electorally he might have engineered the system so that the PAP will be invincible for the next 20 years. What however happens when life's journey comes to an end? Will he follow in the footsteps of his father? The funeral was magnificent but somehow LKY did not seem to be at peace. A man who is at peace does not ask his daughter to bring him to a jurisdiction where assisted suicide is legal.

Even the total dick Scroobal manages to write something decent once a while.

What a summary of his life achievements. Lived for so long, but can't really think of something outstanding he did.

It was not only sad but Nathan and his tenure became rather comical and became the subject of much ridicule. He getting his daughter that position was the talk of the entire civil service and he has only himself to blame. Even a PSC scholar made a mockery of him and he was given gentle rap on the knuckles. At least Philip Yeo threatened to sue.

Sleeping With The Enemy

When the Memorial to the Civilian Victims of the Japanese Occupation ("The Cenotaph") was spray painted with graffiti, many were howling and baying for blood about the sacrilege of the war dead. Some of those outraged may be blissfully unaware of two living individuals who used to cosy up to the Japanese occupiers of World War II.

One answered an advertisement in the Synonan Shimbun and went to work for the Japanese propaganda department called the Hodobu. His job, deciphering intercepted cables from Reuters, UP, AP, Central News Agency of China and TASS, may have contributed to the capture, torture and death of many a freedom fighter. One of the editors, George Takemura, was pal enough to drop in in the evening and give him a packet of Japanese cigarettes from his own rations.("The Singapore Story", pg 63,64)

The other met his Jap buddy by helping him to buy fish and vegetable at the market. Soon he became errant boy of second lieutenant "Amaya-san" for pineapples and papayas (no mangoes, this was way before Michael Palmer's time). Amaya's boss, lieutenant Kokubu, treated him to miso soup and Japanese pickles. He even helped them build the Bakri memorial for Japense soldiers who died fighting there, the last major stand of British and Allied troops. Before long he was made an inspector in the Japanese police department, who hunted down the Malayan People's Anti-Japanese Army (MPAJA).

No wonder, after the Japs were finally kicked out, and he was looking for a new job, one Major McLean made clear he disapproved of the fact he was an interpreter during the Occupation and accused him of being a collaborator. McLean explained that the MPAJA had fought side-by-side with the British, fought many running battles against the Japanese throughout the Occupation. In SR Nathan's mind, the MPAJA were the bad guys, and the Japs the nice fellows. Worse, he told McLean he would carry a gun for the Eskimo rather than carry anything for the British. ("An Unexpected Journey, Path To The Presidency", SR Nathan, page 122)
