Now I know where Cambodia's procurement officials learned their trade skills. 7 or 8 years ago the Cambodian immigration bought a very expensive (*wink*wink*) fingerprint system to be installed at all airports (at the time of installation, only airports serving Phnom Penh and Siem Reap had international flights but I believe they bought equipment enough for smaller provinicial airports no bigger than a postage stamp). The Korean supplier got paid in full before complete implementation and disappeared.As far as I know, it still remains largely a white elephant with no real function. How do I know? Well, if the system is functioning, having your fingerprints scanned would have brought your details on screen in a nanosecond if you already visited Cambodia at least 1 previous occasion, and it would have been the first thing you're asked to do by the officer.The process now involves handing over your passport, the officer looks and scrutinizes it and, if satisfied, stamps it, then asks, as an afterthought, for your fingerprints, of all fingers both hands. And what fooking system needs all 10 fingerprints?Today when you are asked to place your right 4 fingers on the fingerprint scanner, then your right thumb, and likewise your left, the data captured are not going anywhere it can be analysed, stored nor retrieved. Frequent visitors will tell you that requests for your prints are erratic, sometimes you're asked and other times not, sometimes only the thumb(s), or fingers or an assortment of combinations.Farces like these are expected in Cambodia but squeaky-clean Singapore, where the government would have you sued if you even think negatively of them?
