Chitchat Yaacob - a cabinet minister ?

With his latest comment about Pokemon Go plus all his gaffes in the past from meteorology to environment issues I seriously wonder how he even made the cabinet. All his siblings are bright, well educated and think before they speak. This guy on the other hand is a real wonder. His approach is to shoot first and then find out what is actually going on.

I doubt this guy would even make deputy sec in the Civil Service. I don't know if he is actually running the Ministry or the Ministry running him. People I have spoken to say that he is keen and hardworking but does not have the smart or the spine to do much. For an engineer the word logic is so far removed.

I am also wondering if the press is baiting him with the Pokemon Go matter knowing his past. They would not dare ask the Old man on such a trivial thing. Honestly for the amount of money paid to Ministers, is Pokemon Go a matter of importance by any measure.

PAP do not want smart people in cabinet. Skills they look for will be on a different type. Any normal people that shows some normalcy will make the CNA look bad.

Note his brilliant answer and how MDA is going to do it - "we can do it in such a way that it becomes a win-win situation.”" We pay them a substantial amount to focus on Pokemon Go. This is a cabinet minister. How come they did not think of "win-Win" when it came to CPF and plethora of things.

SINGAPORE - While Singapore fans of Pokemon Go cannot wait for the game to be launched here, the Singapore Government has said it will monitor the game’s impact on society.

The game, which has taken the world by storm, uses augmented reality technology to allow players to “see” virtual Pokemon characters as they view their surroundings through their smartphone cameras.

Minister for Communications and Information Yaacob Ibrahim gave his comments in response to questions on Sunday (July 24) about whether the Government would introduce any guidelines for the game, given that it has caused problems in other countries, from criminal trespass to traffic accidents as players hunt for the characters.

“We have to study very, very carefully whatever that is brought into Singapore,” he said, stressing that it must not harm lifestyles or the way things have been done here.

Prof Yaacob was speaking to reporters at the National Deaf Games at the Singapore Badminton Hall.

“We will monitor the situation, how this particular game is being played and... its impact on society,” he added.

“And if it's really something which we should be concerned about I think MDA (the Media Development Authority) will definitely decide on what are the things we can do best, if the game is really needed here, how... we can do it in such a way that it becomes a win-win situation.”

Pokemon Go is already available officially in more than 35 countries.

Japan, where the game was launched last Friday, has already issued a safety guide warning of heat stroke, dubious strangers and other risks.

Indonesian officials have even called the game a security threat, while some in Egypt and Russia have claimed that the game is a plot by spy agencie
What did he say about Pokemon?

In 2009, he famously said that the flood in Orchard Road was a freak event that occurs once every 50 years. And Orchard Road continued to flood year after year for sometime. His successor in the Environment Ministry and cabinet colleagues Vivian Balakrishnan gained notoriety for suggesting that it was a "ponding" issue. Both gaffes entered the national consciousness since and etched for posterity.

You forgot to mention of the tales that he spun, that titilate our senses, especially the part that stimulate laughter, on the FT workers swept leaves into the storm drains at Botanic gardens, thus choking the water at Stamford canal that flows through Orchard Rd. Later, after the 'storm' had cleared, they started to upgrade the canal again & install, "ponding" sensors...

There must be an award like the raspberries awards that they give out annually before the oscars, we should have a local version call the "chikus" awards for all these tall tales...
