Default Disgusting letter by Tan Hau Teck on Dr Allan Ooi's death

    By Tan Hau Teck

My sympathies go out to the family of CPT(Dr) Allan Ooi.

However, I totally disagree with some of the comments about how MINDEF is to blame for his death.

Now, it could be that Dr Ooi’s job in the Singapore Armed Forces was a rather stressful one. He probably wasn’t happy, and he didn’t want to be bonded. However, he was the one who signed on the dotted line. He knew what he was getting into when he signed the Local Study Award. And his extension of bond came about because he went for further specialist training - training which he consented to.

If he did not want to be bonded, why did he go for further training?

Some argue that he was too young to bond his life away like that. Well, that is a slippery slope argument.

If he’s too young to sign a bond, then how old must one be? And perhaps then we should increase the age for young men to serve National Service or to get married, as they are probably too young to hold a rifle or have a family too, right?

i think the crux now is whether Mindef unilaterally force him to extend bond(cos they say is the new policy must go for this special course...bla bla...) or whether he knowingly go and study some more despite knowing his bond will be extended.

First my sympathies to the family.
    Next the cold hard facts/questions:
    1. His family is very rich. Why he need to go on scholarship and deprive a less priviledge 18 y.o. boy a place?
    2. If he is too young to understand when he signed, then the same excuse can be used bu everyone who wants out.
    3. His parents are all highly educated. If they cannot advise him, then all the other people with less educated parent will have even better excuse to say that they have nobody to advise them before they signed.
    4. During the period when he went AWOL, what did his parent do? This is a mystery/gap that is not filled (or did I missed the details here?). Did the parent not try to find him? Or did the parent knew his whereabouts but did not inform the authority?
    5. Basically we cannot have the cake and eat it as I have been told many times.

I only comment as I see the episode.

What so disgusting about the letter? when you sign a contract , you are obliged to fulfuill your obligation. It is the rich and educated who try to wiggle out of a obligation.
It is lucky that he had departed, just imagine in times of crisis your MO awol and no MO attends to your injuries.
