Taipei, July 23 (CNA) Taiwan's smartphone sales in June were affected by an economic slowdown to fall to a low for this year, according to industry sources.

The sources said that as many international smartphone brands are in a transition period before launching new models to stimulate buying, many consumers remained unwilling to buy, which pushed down the sales for the month.

In June, only 607,000 smartphones were sold in Taiwan, down 5.3 percent from a month earlier, to the lowest level so far this year, indicating that the local smartphone market remains slow, the sources said.

In terms of sales value, U.S.-based Apple Inc. ranked as the largest supplier in Taiwan last month, taking a 41.2 percent market share on the back of the high-priced iPhone models, the sources said.

Samsung Electronics Co. of South Korea came in second with a 22 percent share, ahead of Taiwan's HTC Corp. (宏達電), with an 11.5 percent share, Sony Corp. of Japan, with a 10.5 percent share, and Taiwan-based PC vendor Asustek Computer Inc. (華碩) with a 5.6 percent share, the sources added.

In terms of sales volume, Samsung grasped the top spot, taking a 24.5 percent market share, ahead of Asustek with a 16.2 percent share, Apple with a 15.7 percent share, HTC with a 15 percent share, and Sony with a 7.7 percent share.

The sources said that Samsung and Asustek benefited from their efforts in launching low- to mid-end models to sell more units than other brands. Asustek is one of Taiwan's PC suppliers that has diversified its product mix by entering the smartphone market and is well known for its budget models.

As for sales of individual models, Apple's iPhone 6s 64G was the top seller in the local market in June, followed by the iPhone 6s Plus 64G, Samsung's Galaxy J7, the Galaxy J7 (2016 version), Asustek's ZenFone 2 Laser ZE500KL 16G, the ZenFone 2 Laser Ze500KL 8G, HTC's Desire 728, Samsung's Galaxy J5, China-based OPPO's FI model, and the ZenFone 2 Laser ZE500KL 32G.

Apple still topped the individual model sales rankings by taking advantage of its latest high-end iPhone models, the sources said. However, no high-end models in the Android camp entered the top 10 list in June, while only low- and mid-end models made the list, the sources added.
