Serious Jiak Liao Bee Tan: ITE and Poly kias are RUBBISH

It was reported that at an SDP public forum last Saturday (16 July), one of the panelists, Mr Tay Kheng Soon. told the audience that because his brother, the late Dr Tay Eng Soon, stood up to then Education Minister Tony Tan instead of becoming a “yes” man, his brother’s career was “truncated” by the PAP.

At the time, Dr Tay was the Minister of State for Education, reporting to Tony Tan. Tony Tan was the Minister for Education from 1985 to 1991.

Mr Tay said this about his brother, “As you all know my brother, the late Tay Eng Soon, was the Minister of State for Education, he fought for ten years within the cabinet to increase funding for the ITEs and Polytechnics, yet his career prospect within the party was actually truncated by it.”

“The reason was – he never told me what actually happened, loyalty to the party, right? After he died, his wife told me the real story. All the time, Tony Tan, that’s why I have no respect for Tony Tan at all. Tony Tan said to him all the time, all through the ten years, ‘Why do you want to throw good money after bad rubbish?’ I cannot stand this. This is the inherent elitism. You have to break that.”

So, according to Dr Tay Eng Soon’s brother, Mr Tay, who heard it from Dr Tay’s wife, Tony Tan then as the Education Minister was of the view that ITEs and Polytechnics are “bad rubbish”.

What ITE and poly are rubbish? Didn't PAP also criticise local degree holders? All are rubbish lah.

my years of experience working with both poly and nus software and hardware grads under my lead have convinced me that poly grads can hack it while nus grads cannot when it cums to devil-in-the-details work that requires deep problem solving. not that nus grads are not intellectually smarter (they are with pie in the sky, sound-bytey, lofty motherhood ideas) but they lack the hands-on tinkering skills and training that poly provides from day one without wasting time on other non-tech nonsense. i'd rather have a 2-year techie specifically trained on hacking tough i.t. issues, good at fpga's, and knowing how a system on a chip (soc) works than a 4-year uni grad who spends 2 years chasing pre-reqs and 2 years more scratching so called core subjects. when the same nus students cum to stanford for a 1-year stint, they are shocked their stanford peers are well ahead in software and hardware deep dives similar to those of poly training. if only nus armed their engineering students with poly basic skills, such as programming and designing chipsets and kernel software, will they be more effective and useful before their stanford stint.

Tony Tan is behaving as he should; he's a natural aristocrat.

Moreover it should be obvious by now that PAP only holds those with degrees from Mumbai University and Burmese universities in high regard. Your Sinkie compatriots should enrol in them.

That's too easy a way out for daft & humji sinkies. They should be slowly roasted in the PAP oven until perfection so that foreign talents can have a taste of their stupidity.

ITE? Only useless chow ah bengs

Knew someone who used his Spore poly results to get into the University of California. He never returned to Spore because after he finished his University he stay on to work in the US.

His doctorate is only an honourary doctorate conferred on him by his alma mater University of Adeliade, a 3rd class uni in Australia. He never studied one minute for it.

Poly is big fuck meh? I know people who got into a US uni with their O level results and a good SAT score.

ADELAIDE (Australia) — Singapore will continue to build on its excellent relations with Australia and explore new ways of collaboration, said President Tony Tan Keng Yam today (June 17). He was speaking at the University of Adelaide, where he was conferred an honorary doctorate, during his six-day State Visit to Australia.
Dr Tan earned his doctorate in applied mathematics at the University of Adelaide in 1967. “I was blessed that my wife could be with me during that period. Though it was not easy, it was most definitely an enjoyable and fruitful time for us,” he said. “Besides graduating with a PhD in Applied Mathematics, my eldest son was born here!”

Presenting the honorary doctorate, Professor Warren Bebbington, Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Adelaide, lauded Dr Tan’s “long record of outstanding achievements both as a leader in the Singapore government and in the business sectors”.
Thanking his Alma mater for the honour, Dr Tan said Singapore is a beneficiary of Australia’s open and generous education policy, with Australia remaining a popular destination for Singapore students. There are currently 130,000 Singaporeans who are alumni of Australian universities.
Dr Tan said Singapore-Australia education ties were forged in the 1960s, when Singapore students came to Australia under the Colombo Plan Scholarship. Recently, Australian launched the New Colombo Plan — to send its students to Asia.
“Singapore is happy to be amongst the four participants of the pilot phase of the New Colombo Plan,” said Dr Tan. “Over time, these students will act as yet another bridge connecting our two countries. I am confident that the New Colombo Plan will play an important role in strengthening our education and people-to-people ties. The New Colombo Plan also reflects the Australian government’s broader focus on enhancing its engagement with Asia.”
Dr Tan said education is just one of the key pillars of the long standing and wide-ranging bilateral ties that Singapore and Australia share, and Singapore will continue to work with Australia to explore new ways of collaborations.
Defence ties also remain strong, and both countries enjoy very “healthy and robust” trade and investment relations, said Dr Tan. Singapore is Australia’s largest trading partner in ASEAN and Australia’s fourth largest investor.
Earlier on Tuesday, while still in the capital Canberra, Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott called on Dr Tan at Parliament House.
Singapore’s Foreign Affairs Ministry says the leaders reaffirmed the strong bilateral ties, stressing cooperation is deep and multi-faceted across diverse areas such as defence, trade and investments, people-to-people exchanges and education links.
They agreed to explore opportunities to bring relations to an even higher level, and had a “good exchange” on regional developments. CHANNEL NEWSASIA
