Alleviating core business decline may be a losing battle for SPH: analysts
MEDIA & MARKETING | Staff Reporter, Singapore

Its newspaper ad revenues declined by 8.6%.

The media firm may have done every possible measure to try and revive the flickering flame of its core business, but analysts think it may be a losing battle for Singapore Press Holdings.

According to a report by OCBC, the group has been actively managing its cost base against persistent inflationary pressure which saw materials, production and distribution costs fall by 8.0% YoY to S$42.7m over the quarter, while the increase in staff costs was capped to 2.6% YoY.

“The group’s property segment pulled in a steady set of results over the quarter, as 3QFY16 revenues increased 1.6% YoY to S$60.3m on the back of higher rental and services income. Dividend uncertainties likely to foment headwinds for shares We update our valuation model for lower profit expectations and our fair value estimate dips 9.8% to S$3.41, from S$3.78 previously,” the report noted.

Additionally, OCBC adds that uncertainties remain in the firm’s future as the group continues to struggle with formidable market conditions, likely fomenting considerable headwinds for the share price.

Imagine a monopoly protected by state, chaired by an ex-cabinet minister, helmed by Perm grade CEO and yet struggling. They have only themselves to blame. No credibility here and overseas, many people just do not see the value they can offer. The most important thing about a national paper is domestic content and truthful analysis on what is actually going on. Nothing of that sort takes place.

The sooner they die the better. No value to Singaporeans at all. Even if they change now nobody will trust them. Totally out of touch with the modern world. Even if they are free I wouldn't bother to take them.

You obviously don't know what you're talking about.

Do you know that SPH sweeps the Asian Media awards every single year. They won in 5 categories this year and a looking to make a clean sweep in the not too distant future.

http://news.asiaone.com/news/business/sph-publications-win-5-awards-asian-media-awards-2016

Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) has won five awards for outstanding design for newspaper and magazine, photojournalism and community service at the Asian Media Awards 2016.

The awards were presented at the Publish Asia 2016 Gala Dinner by the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) in Manila, The Philippines.

The Straits Times (ST), clinched Gold for Best in Design (Newspaper Overall Design) for its launch issue of the redesigned paper.

To mark its 170th anniversary last year, the editorial team gave the products - print, website, mobile and tablet - a major revamp. The content is now drawn from a 400-strong, fully integrated multi-media newsroom, which includes experienced correspondents in Singapore as well as around Asia and the world.

The paper was also awarded silver for Lim Sin Thai's Para Games coverage under sports photography, and bronze for Alphonsus Chern's 'Black Knight', which featured the official aerobatics team of the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF).

Lianhe Zaobao and Lianhe Wanbao also won a silver in the category of best in community service for the project 'Reading Newspapers With The Elderly' (陪你看报纸).

Since August 2014, Lianhe Zaobao and Lianhe Wanbao have been helping the elderly to connect with society through the reading of newspapers with editors and reporters, and using newspaper cuttings, photographs and slides to increase their understanding of current affairs.

More than 100 volunteers from the two Chinese language newspapers read to the elderly at three locations for an hour every week. In 2015, the papers also organised eight special talks based on issues that are relevant to the elderly, such as enacting a will and Lasting Power of Attorney, managing personal finances after retirement and monetising home assets etc.

Mr Goh Sin Teck, Editor of Lianhe Zaobao, said: "Lianhe Zaobao, together with Lianhe Wanbao, is proud that such a meaningful community service activity is gaining popularity in Singapore, with thousands of seniors benefitting over a short span of two years. We are pleased to collaborate with new partners and look forward to even more engaging sessions."

The Peak Selections: Gourmet & Travel, a publication of The Peak magazine, also won a bronze for best in magazine overall design for its issue number 15.

The Asian Media Awards, presented by WAN-IFRA, saw 462 entries from all over Asia and the Middle East competing for excellence in printing quality, design, infographics, photography , editorial content, newspaper marketing and community service.

It is like owning an entire stretch of paved road with all facilities built for the road & it is free of maintenance costs, all the need to do, is to build a gantry on each need of the road, & whoever having to use that road ( advertising etc.. publishing etc) have to pay "toll" & that is in ONLY ROAD YOU HAVE TO TAKE.

How could a monopolists struggle to survive & they are not the only government "monopolists" struggling to survive? strange isn't?

SPH is not a media business. It is national propaganda and deserves to be shut down. Why do Singaporeans have to pay to read a political party's propaganda?

Likewise, SMRT is best nationalised. All its management shd be civil servants and be paid civil servants' pays. Nationalise SMRT and charge fares to recover operating costs and not to make money. that way, transporattion cost will be lower. National transport monopoly shd not profiteer at citizens' expense. Why do Singaporeans need to pay so much for train rides just to reward cronies and allow a political party make money to pay its cadres obscene salaries?

It's not only Singapore, all around the world the paper printing newspapers are facing this problem of low sales. With today's electronic news website, almost everyone with smart phone can access to latest news almost immediately when news happens.

The reasons people buy newspapers nowadays are mainly to look at housing or cars or maybe some supermarket sales discount. SPH has to come out with new ways to make themselves relevant or they can go look for other jobs.

The trend is certainly away from print worldwide and that a given more than 15 years ago. So its not a surprise. It is also a fact that even the best print publishers are facing a challenge as they make the transition and along the way hold on to their readership as well as bring in new readers. The difference is none of them are monopolies and none of them are protected by the state by legislated management shares except for countries like North Korea, Zimbabwe etc. Many people do not even know that the Govt has veto power on the appointment of editor and their tenure

If the newsprint publishers and their journalist have little or no credibility, the challenge is much more harder. After many years of giving away 6 mths bonus (blood money to toe the line), SPH began retrenching journalists, reduce recruitment because they could not afford them any longer. Unlike factories and manufacturing plants where you can reduce headcount by increasing productivity, in Journalism you can't.

2 of SPH's best paid and more loyal journalists holding senior rank were absorbed into the Civil Service in the senior grade because SPH could no longer afford to keep them. Many others were retrenched even some that were loyal to the Govt such as Bertha Henson.

Note the drastic reduction in quality content that is politically neutral.

Latest Glassdoor Reviews:

Pros

Good place to learn and build your network. Young and energetic colleagues as turnover is high.

Cons

Like a lot of companies in sg, scholars have a faster track. Long and irregular hours due to the job nature. Stress and fast paced environment.

Advice to Management

They should have enough feedback from those who left

Pros

Established system and defined work paths and work flow. Decent reward system.

Cons

Hierarchy and political issues; too much middle management complacency leading to underpaid, over worked underlings. Too old school and traditional, too many long-term staff who are no longer relevant - and worse, no longer interested in being relevant.

Advice to Management

Send the old timers for more upskilling and training, and be willing to pay and motivate younger or fresh employees - or watch brain drain happen.

I think this was the puzzle that many are stumped over. How can a total monopoly struggle. In its heydays, it paid the highest salaries for its journalists. Its also had an impressive overseas scholarship programme plus a mid career post graduate scholarship programme. It also went into theme parks, broadcasting, property development and were rolling in profits. Except for property development which largely benefitted their directors and senior people, the rest of the ventures failed.

Looks at what happened to Hardware Zone, I am told it is profitable but the desire to control online content has failed. They are anti-pap and worst still it is not the forum to go for a robust or serious discussions. Its is not even light, it childish.

They spent time so much of time toeing the line and saying the right things, they forgot how to run a business. In the print days, everyone had to buy the papers to find a job or buy a house (non-HDB). Instead of investing in job and property portals, they were navel gazing. 99.com is a runaway success as a property portal. And the entire concept was copied from a vendor from Perth. SPH thought they were invincible and are now paying the price.

But I can guarantee you that the Govt will make sure they do not fail. One area that the govt needs SPH is control over opinions and views even if news coverage is bad and not up to standard. One way to stop others doing it and the recent laws on online blogs covering contents has been overly restrictive.

Smart people will know where to go if they want more balanced coverage and opinions of local issues.

The "Smart Nation" initiative proposed by your Prime Ministar may not be officially launched as yet but there are hundreds of smart people already living in your country. They constitute the 30%.
