BATON ROUGE, Louisiana (REUTERS) - A former US Marine sergeant who served in Iraq has been identified as the gunman who killed three police officers and wounded three others in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on Sunday (july 17), according to a government source with knowledge of the investigation.

Another source familiar with the investigation told Reuters that the suspect, Gavin Long, 29, was from Kansas City, Missouri. The source said there was reason to believe a 911 call may have been used to lure police to the shooting scene, and the possibility that it had been a conspiracy was being examined by investigators.

Officials speaking publicly have not yet released the name of the suspected killer or any details, beyond saying they believed the single shooter was killed in the shootout.

Long, who was black, was affiliated with the anti-government New Freedom Group, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing a person briefed on the investigation. A spokesman for the Southern Poverty Law Centre, which tracks extremist groups, said she had no information about that.

Sunday was Long’s 29th birthday, according to the Kansas City Star newspaper.

He served in the Marines for five years, from August 2005 to August 2010, and rose to the rank of sergeant, according to Ms Yvonne Carlock, deputy public affairs officer for the US Marines. Long was deployed to Iraq from June 2008 to January 2009.

CBS News reported that Long left the Marines with an honorable discharge. Carlock would not confirm that detail.

Public records show Long had lived in Kansas City and Grandview, Missouri, as well as San Diego and Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

In Kansas City, police cordoned off streets within a block or more of the house where Long lived in a working-class neighborhood of mostly black residents.

Mr Bob Phillips, 24, had lived across the street from Long for a month but said he did not know him. Phillips said he was surprised to hear that Long lived nearby. “It’s a quiet neighborhood, kids out playing,” he said.

Missouri court records show Long divorced his wife in 2011, with no children at the time. There was no criminal record for him in Missouri.

Long was a defendant in a case involving delinquent city taxes. It was filed in March and was dismissed in June, according to court records.

Long attended the University of Alabama for one semester in spring 2012 and made the Dean’s List, according to university spokesman Monica Watts. “The university police had no interaction with him while he was a student,” she said in an email.

Mr Brady Vancel, a witness to the Baton Rouge shooting on Sunday, said on CNN that he ran into the suspect, who was dressed in black, a few minutes before the police officers were shot. The man was carrying an AR-15 assault rifle and wearing a ski mask, Mr Vancel said.

The gunman “looked up and he saw me. We stopped, I froze, he froze for a second, and he turned around and ran in the opposite direction the same time I turned around and ran in the opposite direction,” he added.

I don't understand what the blacks are complaining about because if they are not happy they can always fuck off back to Africa where they came from.

I think Leroy is happy to be in the US of A. If he's an ordinary bloke, he could sell drugs and become rich, if he's talented, he could be on MTV, or playbasketball and become rich and drive a Cadillac. Back in Africa, if he's lucky he gets to join a militia as a child and they go hacking off other people's limbs, if he's entrepreneur, he can poach rhino horns or elephant tusks, or else, take a boat ride to Europe and become a terrorist. If he's gay, he gets beaten up. Good luck Leroy!

Cheers!

This fucking nigger and crooked Hillary Clinton are responsible for the recent spate of cops killing and they have got blood on their hands.

They support the 'black lives matter' movement and he even invited the movement's leader to the White House.

Obama's problem is that he tries to be all things to everyone. So he struggles to even contemplate breaking eggs to make omelette. Compounded by the fact that he inherited the mess that Bush and he Neo Conservatives buddies left him such Afghanistan, Iraq, and consequential ISIS. He did not move fast enough in the first 3 years when he had a majority in the Senate and the House. People got fed and voted the Republicans into Congress.

To date the strongest view that people can identify Obama with is not national building or any other things that spells leadership but his obsession with being politically correct. In that he was absolutely resolute. The fact that the guy does not have single blemish, stain, an innuendo, a hidden history or even political gaffe to his name shows that he is not a risk taker. And bear in mind that he never held a full time job outside of politics since the day he graduated. Interestingly his cabinet had made more waves than he did.

Don't give me this crap. Obama's problem is that he is totally incompetent at best. After eight long years still blaming Bush? That's rich. Oh, I forgot, liberals blame everybody but themselves.

And do you know that Bush was winning the war in Middle East and Afghanistan and actually bettered the lives of people, especially women, in Iraq and Afghanistan until Obama came along and overturned everything and handed the middle east and Afghanistan to ISIS and the Taliban on a silver platter.

There was no isis during the time of saddam. And taliban was there after US did not support afghans financially after soviets pulled out, but they giving arms to defeat soviets is ok.

Bro, the term "struggles to even contemplate breaking eggs to make omelette" means paralysis which leads to incompetence. When you say someone is incompetent you must explain why,. Thus the term.

the shooting of oscar grant at fruitvale bart station by a bart cop in 2009 was not the first but the most controversial killing of a black young man by police, especially white cops. it was unfortunate and avoidable. the warning signs and breakdown in training were very evident and precipitated later incidents that unfolded. the justice department and attorney general under obama could have learned from that event and prevented further escalations by instilling and imposing a national standard in police training, especially in the use of both non-lethal and lethal force. after all, this administration is quick to use executive privilege and executive orders to push its weight around when faced with congressional, state, and judicial resistance. why not catch and prevent the issue from blowing up when it's budding instead of waiting till end of term to start calling for townhall meetings of reconciliation and kumbaya kumfoolery? it's too late and does not logically, scientifically and factually address the issue that has already reached no-turning back emotional breakpoint.

the oscar grant "accidental" shooting is symptomatic of police departments not training their officers well and professionally. i've trained with cops and deputy sheriffs at the shooting range and i know they are not fully prepared to handle the use of lethal force let alone non-lethal force including the use of tasers. if the federal admin were to learn from the oscar grant lesson, many of these fatal cop on black shooting would have been prevented. if even a national set of advisories and guidelines (don't need mandates) were to be disseminated to all law enforcement units on correct use of weapons on would be suspects, especially blacks, unfortunate incidents could be minimized, not eliminated.

for example, at the time of oscar's shooting bart officers were carrying both tasers and pistols on the same side of their belt, one up and one below. this is called the "strong" side. but why? cops are telling me instincts cause their right hand, typically the "strong" side, to reach for a weapon. so they holster both taser and pistol on the same side. how stupid. told them accidents would happen as taser grip and pistol grip were identical to touch without visual. in times of stress and emergencies, no cop would have time for a visual check. moreover, the weight of both weapons was too much on one side, causing overcompensation to their bodies and undue physical stress over the long term. what was wrong with training cops to use their weak side (left hand for most) for non-lethal weapons like tasers? no, no. they wouldn't hear any of this. cops must have degrees of freedom to do whatever they want with the carry and use of weapons, so they insisted. after all, their lives were on the line. anyway, if bart cops were to get a directive or advisory from the justice department concerning weak-side strong-side separation of taser and pistol, oscar grant and many other unarmed black and hispanic kids would still be alive today.

the next example had to do with blacks, both men and women, mouthing back, using expletives, and resisting arrest when being held. if cops had overpowered black suspects by pinning them down, they could ignore their mother-laden expletives and not get emotionally and physically upset. after all, sticks and stones can break bones but words can never hurt. many times cops pulled out weapons after getting cursed in order to shut blacks up or teach them a lesson in submission. if they didn't carry tasers, they used their primary weapon. and either accidents happened or intentional shooting ensued. all these basic life-and-death confrontational training tips could be advocated by the justice department and attorney general the last 8 years. but no, zero, zilch, nada advisory and guidance to assist with law enforcement training ever came from the obama admin. they were burying their heads in the sand.
