ISTANBUL/ANKARA (Reuters) - Turkey's military said on Friday it had seized power, but the prime minister said the attempted coup would be put down.
If successful, the overthrow of President Tayyip Erdogan, who has ruled Turkey since 2003, would amount to one of the biggest shifts in power in the Middle East in years.
Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said the elected government remained in office. There was no immediate word from Erdogan. The Turkish sister channel of CNN said he was "safe".
The armed forces had taken power in the country to protect the democratic order and to maintain human rights, the military said in a statement sent by email and reported on Turkish TV channels. All of Turkey's existing foreign relations would be maintained and the rule of law would remain the priority, it said.
The state-run Anadolu news agency said the chief of Turkey's military staff was among people taken "hostage" in the capital Ankara. CNN Turk also reported that hostages were being held at the military headquarters.
Turkey, a NATO member with the second biggest military in the Western alliance, is one of the most important allies of the United States in the fight against Islamic State.
It is a principal backer of opponents of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in that country's civil war, and host to 2 million Syrian refugees.
The country has been at war with Kurdish separatists, and has suffered numerous bombing and shooting attacks this year, including an attack two weeks ago by Islamists at Istanbul's main airport that killed more than 40 people.
After serving as prime minister from 2003, Erdogan was elected president in 2014 with plans to alter the constitution to give the previously ceremonial presidency far greater executive powers.
His AK Party, with roots in Islamism, has long had a strained relationship with the military and nationalists in a state that was founded on secularist principles after World War One, and which has a history of military coups.
Yildirim said a group within Turkey's military had attempted to overthrow the government and security forces have been called in to "do what is necessary".
"Some people illegally undertook an illegal action outside of the chain of command," Yildirim said in comments broadcast by private channel NTV.
"The government elected by the people remains in charge. This government will only go when the people say so."
Those behind the attempted coup would pay the highest price, he added.
Footage on local television channels showed military vehicles blocking bridges over the Bosphorus in Istanbul and tanks deployed at the city's main airport. In the capital Ankara, warplanes and helicopters roared overhead. A Reuters journalist heard gunshots.
A Turkish official who did not want to be named said soldiers had been deployed in other cities in Turkey, but did not specify which ones.
Dogan News Agency reported the national police directorate had summoned all police to duty in Ankara.

[h=1]Singapore plans to invest $900 million in Turkey[/h]ANADOLU AGENCY
ANKARA
Published March 18, 2015

Singapore plans to invest $900 million in Turkey, a senior official said on Wednesday.

In an exclusive interview with The Anadolu Agency, Second Undersecretary of the Singapore Ministry of Foreign Affairs Albert Chua said that "Turkey and Singapore can do more together."

"The current investments of Singapore in Turkey are about $300 million, which is not a large amount," Chua said.

"We are working to improve relations in all fields between Turkey and Singapore," Chua pointed out.

Chua said Singaporean investors are interested in the Turkish market, which has a high potential. Banks and certain non-financial companies are the most high-profile targets for the time being, he added.

The geographical distance between the two countries is not important, Chua explained. "What matters is that the two countries share the same perspective."

Chua visited the Turkish capital of Ankara to hold bilateral talks with the Undersecretary of the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Feridun Sinirlioglu, on economic and political issues.

According to the Turkish Foreign Ministry's website, Turkey established diplomatic relations with Singapore on February 12, 1969. The total trade volume between Turkey and Singapore has maintained a steady level of $1 billion. At present, there are 49 Singaporean companies operating in Turkey.

[h=1]Temasek Buys Stake in Turkish Bank[/h]

By P.R. Venkat And
Emre Peker

Dec. 5, 2012 2:41 p.m. ET
Singapore state-investment company Temasek Holdings Pte. Ltd. has bought a stake in a Turkish government-owned bank and is looking at other lenders as it makes its first entry into the fast-growing economy, people with knowledge of the process said.
With a portfolio of more than $160 billion, Temasek is looking to expand into emerging markets both within and outside Asia, with a focus on buying banks as a way to benefit from the rising spending by the growing middle class. Temasek already holds stakes worth $18 billion in China, mostly in state-owned banks.
The Singapore firm bought shares in Turkiye Halk Bankasi AS , Turkey's second-biggest state-owned bank by assets, during a secondary public offering last month, the people said without detailing how much was spent. The Turkish government raised $2.5 billion selling the stock that increased public ownership to 49%, with the offering more than 2½ times subscribed. Temasek is also looking at the country's largest state-owned bank by assets, TC Ziraat Bankasi AS, but a decision on whether to invest hasn't been made, the people said.
Turkiye Halk Bankasi didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. A Ziraat Bankasi executive denied that the Ankara-based lender is being looked at by Singapore's state investment firm.
Turkey has emerged as a hot destination for foreign investors as the economy grows quickly and as it successfully brings down its high inflation rate. So far it has remained largely immune from both the debt crisis in Europe and the nearby political problems in the Middle East. Last month, Fitch Ratings became the first of the three major credit-rating firms to upgrade Turkey to investment grade for the first time since 1994.
In July, Turkey's Economy Minister Zafer Caglayan said he met Temasek officials during his visit to Singapore. He added that the state investment firm was closely following his country's banks.
Turkey has continued this year with its plans for privatizing the remaining three state-owned banks. The country's Deputy Prime Minister Ali Babacan said last month that Ankara has begun work on the initial public offering of state-owned Ziraat Bankasi. The government is also working to transfer shares of Turkiye Vakiflar Bankasi TAO, or VakifBank, the country's third-biggest state-owned bank, to facilitate a second public offering.

For Temasek, the banking sector has a strong upside potential, the people said. The investment in Turkey will give Temasek indirect exposure to Europe, the country's main trading partner.
The Singapore firm is following in the footsteps of other cash-rich emerging-market countries investing in Turkey. In September, Russia's Sberbank, which is majority owned by the central bank, acquired Turkey's DenizBank AS , a privately owned lender. Last year, Malaysia's state-owned investment company Khazanah Nasional Bhd., through its unit Integrated Healthcare Holdings Sdn. Bhd. , bought a majority stake in Turkey hospital chain Acibadem.
Temasek's investments in Africa, Central Asia, the Middle East and Latin America have remained unchanged at just 3% for the fiscal year ended March 31 compared with the year before, according to the company's latest annual report. Singapore, and the rest of Asia excluding Singapore, take up the bulk of its investments at 30% and 42%, respectively. North America and Europe account for 11%, with Australia and New Zealand taking the remaining 14%.

If Turkey had Ah Gong's scholar system in place, there would not be any coup. Now you see Ah Gong's wisdom in cultivating and winning the support of the generals in the SAF.

There is no need for a military coup in Singapore because the military is already running the country.

PM, DPM are generals. Most ministers are senior officers as are senior civil servants and heads of stat boards.

Our DNA is such that even a cookhouse corporal would not turn up for a coup. We would all be ready for a good battle with the Malaysians and Indonesians if it comes to that but not for a coup. Nothing to do with fear. The man in the street would find no reason to pass control from one bunch of over paid idiots to another, both of whom were cut from the same cloth.

My former general is now a highly placed politician. If he says the word, many of us old soldiers will gladly bear arms for him once again even though we have MR years ago.

Even a hawker who was on the ball in his NS and reservist days would not bother as there would not be a material change. Lots of coup do not have the backing of the people because of this and our is not a volunteer army.

If however ISD staged a coup and executed PAP MPs and People Association Staff, the whole country will come together and rejoice. The main reason is that there is clear material change, the yoke of oppression has been lifted and there is a genuine expectation of change. Whether the country sinks or swims is all together a different matter. We might even end up as a banana republic but there will be short period of rejoicing and celebration. I even dare say that people in HDB estates may even form vigilante lynching mobs that will go after grassroots leaders and their families. It will be a release valve for the pent up emotions.

A bloodless coup is also not possible because there is no viable faction of any size in any part of government or even in the private sector.

Sinkeepoo fake generals are only interested in thinking of how to organize the next NDP parade successfully. A "military general" in Sinkeepoo has hit the apex of his career if he is given the task of organizing the next NDP. After that, they move into politics, not to change the lives of others, but for self gains and money.

Staging a coup and topple a corrupt and authoritarian gahment? Sorry, not their ambition.

Looks like the attempted coup has failed. I always knew that Erdogan would win! The Islamist party and its supporter have removed the powerful military and Turkey is now firmly Islamic!

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Turkish officials said Saturday morning the government had appeared to have repelled an attempted military coup following a night of explosions, air battles and gunfire across the capital that left at least 17 dead, according to state-run media.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in an interview over FaceTime with the CNN Turk station, dismissed the military action as "an attempt at an uprising by a minority within our armed forces." His office declined to disclose his whereabouts, saying only that he was in a secure location.

Turks took to the streets of cities across the country waving national flags throughout the attempted coup to show their support for the government.

By Saturday morning, a top Turkish official said the coup attempt appeared to have been repelled. The senior official told The Associated Press that all government officials were in charge of their offices. The official requested anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue.
