You cannot apply tae kwan do nor karate when fight with alan as he will be using the piachui parang.
but if u fight with a paikia wearing knuckleduster and u stab and kill him in self defence, will u still be charged for manslaughter becos your weapon is more deadly?

IMHO Karate is the more effective martial art than TKD.
From my own martial arts practitioner viewpoint. I'm trained in both.

i dont mind spotting a submachine gun, a bazooka and 6 pack grenade to work if it can be licensed. but knifes and guns r out so one have to invent.
want to be a fighter? need to be a good observer. drape weapons and spot for weapons. a steel pen. a spoon, chopsticks, chairs, kitchen chopper. these will send you to long term jail.
with fist or palm, you can hit lethal spots without visible signs of injuries.

Both TKD and Karate are better than no form of martial arts training.
If you are serious about learning self-defence, you are better off training in MMA, muay thai, krav maga or bjj.
Any good self-defence training should provide you with a great work out, help you lose weight, build muscle, improve hand-leg coordination, easy to learn and provide ample sparring opportunities.
Most wing chun places in Singapore are crap. They spend too much time learning "forms" that have little application in real combat and very little time learning the practical stuff you need when you encounter a real assailant on the streets.
TKD is a sport, not a martial arts.
Most people are ditching traditional martial arts for practical fighting techniques like MMA, bjj, muay thai and boxing. They don't give you the crap about needing to practice for years before you reach martial arts nirvana or something. You will probably get raped by a nigger or AMDK by then.
this mimizuka (ear mound) or hanazuka (nose mound) as it was previously called in kyoto will tell you whether tkd or karate is better.

Well, Karate would be better than Taekwondo because, in Karate, they focus a lot more on hand techniques. You punch with your fists and block with your arms. Which is good advice for a street situation, because you certainly shouldn't perform flashy high kicks in front of multiple opponents. You could slip on the slippery floor and fall and probably die when the gangsters swarm around you to kick you while you are down. Or maybe while you are trying to kick the person directly in front of you, his buddy could attack your blind side and push you over while you have only one feet on the ground.
But while I consider Karate to be better than Taekwondo, I have to say, among all the available styles out there, it is not the best choice for someone who only has self-defense on his mind. If you are really keen on self-defense, you should pick a militant system like Krav Maga or Systema. Both are practised by the Israel army and the Russian special forces respectively. AND both styles are available in Singapore. You can do a Google search yourself, to find the location of the schools.
Now, why do I recommend Krav Maga and Systema just because they are practised by professional soldiers? Because professional soldiers can afford to spend only a small portion of their total training time on hand-to-hand combat, so whatever style they learn has to be a simple but effective one, with non-complex movements and direct strikes to vital parts of the human body and so on and so forth. Custom designed for self-defense.
With traditional styles like Karate and Wing Chun, you will need to put in a lot of effort to learn the basic movements, many of which are not meant for combat but to build up your foundation as a martial artist, before you can even think about sparring. And with a soft style like Aikido, it could take as long as 5-10 years before you can even think about using your skills in a street fight.
because if korea could easily be invaded by a bunch of dwarves who had to bring back decapitated heads for proof of kills by the hundreds of thousands, whatever "martial art" tradition she claimed was far inferior to dwarvish banzai. there were so many gook heads to be shipped back during the war that due to lack of space on the ships the dwarves resorted to cutting the ears and noses instead.
