SINGAPORE: A Singapore Airlines (SIA) flight to Milan caught fire while making an emergency landing in Singapore, but all 222 passengers and 19 crew on board were safely evacuated with no injuries.

Flight SQ368 departed Changi Airport at 2.05am on Monday (Jun 27). About two-and-a-half hours into the flight, the flight was forced to turn back to Singapore due to a fuel leak, passengers onboard the flight told Channel NewsAsia.

SIA said there was an engine oil warning message, after which the pilots decided to turn back to Singapore.

After the plane touched down at Changi Airport at around 6.50am, the aircraft's right engine caught fire, SIA said. The fire was put out by airport emergency services.

Ms Lee Bee Yee, who was onboard the flight with her husband, told Channel NewsAsia the plane was leaking fuel about three hours after taking off from Singapore. She could smell gasoline, she said.

“The pilot said he was going to turn back because the engine is leaking oil on the right side. The captain said that they cannot turn on that side of the engine or else the plane will be vibrating. And they can’t fly like this to Milan…That’s why they turned back,” she said.

“We were sleeping and didn’t think too much about it,” she added.

After the plane landed in Singapore at about 7am, the passengers cheered and clapped. Then, there was a spark and there were “huge flames” from the right side of the plane, she said.

Mrs Mamta Jain, whose husband Amit Jain was onboard the flight, told Channel NewsAsia that the right wing of the plane burst into flames after the plane landed.

"When they landed, he said the engine was on fire and he could see flames. They were all inside the plane and they could see the right wing burning," she said.

Ms Lee said she and the other passengers were frightened. “I stood up, ready to run. But the announcement said to stay calm and to stay in your seats. Passengers were frightened, (but there was) no shouting and everyone was seated.”

It was an agonising five-minute wait for the fire engine and fire fighters to put out the fire, she said. When the fire fighters arrived, they sprayed foam and water on the plane and the fire was put out. It took about five to 10 minutes to put out the fire, she said.

All 222 passengers and 19 crew onboard the flight were safely evacuated, SIA said. Passengers disembarked the plane using stairs and were taken to the terminal building by bus. Passengers will be transferred to another aircraft which is expected to depart for Milan later on Monday, SIA said.*

Ms Lee told Channel NewsAsia that passengers were given the option to defer their flight or to take an alternative flight. Those who chose to take the alternative flight boarded another plane at about 8am, and those who chose not to fly would be put up at a hotel arranged by SIA.

Ms Lee said she decided to defer her flight, and to go home and “hug her kids”. SIA’s handling of the whole process was “very smooth, very good”, she added.

The airline said it will be cooperating fully with the authorities in their investigations.

SIA plane engine caught fire

https://www.facebook.com/premiummall...5644613137402/

I just escaped death!!!!
Our Singapore Airline plane was leaking oil 3 hours flying off and the plane had to turned back. After reaching Changi Airport, as the plane was landing, the engine burst into flames!!!! Huge fire was burning! See video!
It was a heart wrenching 5 mins! Waiting for the fire engine and fire fighters to put out the fire! They shot foam and water into the fire and eventually it was put out! We were so close to death!! I am still in the plane with all passengers. But I think we are safe for now....they will be evacuating us soon.
I thank God I am alive! I going home to hug my kids.... Europe Sale has to wait for a while. Sorry everyone!

Dealt with efficiently and effectively. This proves beyond doubt just how good the PAP is in dealing with a crisis.

Well done sg. From flooding to mrt breakdowns to lift breakdowns and now plane on fire. We are certainly in the right direction. Scdf must refresh their hotel new world skill. It could come in handy soon.

the pap has been letting in unqualified foreigners from 3rd world countries who cl;aimed they are doctors, bankers, construction workers, etc. These foreigners came in unchecked by the pap.

JEM and other new buildings have experienced many electrical, plumbing and building problems because of unskilled and unqualified foreign workers. Will a high rise collapse just like Hotel New World?

Re: SIA plane engine caught fire

If she had chosen a better plane to fly, this will not be happening to her.

Yes fully agreed. They are so good that while in the air for 2 hours plus, they can control and separate the sparks from the leaking fuel, not allowing them to meet. However, upon landing, they decided that its now ok for the 2 friends to unite so that the fire fighters can showcase their prowess. Great skill and control is certainly needed.

Just a number of tech questions :

1. How long does it take to throw fuel before landing?

2. What is the nearest airport at time of detection? ( klia?)

3. Is it sop to fly back to departure airport even if there is a nearer airport?

It is known fact that the tyres generates sparks like firework on landing and has great potential to ignite any leaking fuel. So do we think it is safer to fight the fire in changi rather than elsewhere because the captain has full confidence that the fuel will not catch fire during the 2 h flight back?

If the plane has four engines, they could have shut down one the plane can still fly n touch down. Alas the 777 has two engines, which means you are taking a big risk of engine failures.

Engines failure / fire are rare, the engineer that sign off the last check, FT or sleeping ?

From what I gathered so far, the crew did everything correctly and professionally regarding the air turnback. The engine caught fire after the landing and as to why the crew did not evacuate immediately, they must have had their reasons. Sometimes it could be Air Traffic Control advising them that the fire engines were coming....an evacuation at that point could hamper firefighting and allow the fire to worsen. Lets just wait and see.

It was an oil leak so there was no need to dump fuel or divert to another airport. The best thing to do is to turn back to where you have the best support in terms of engineering and passenger care which in this case was Singapore.
