The speed these missile travels is MACH 5~6 which is 2X the speed of muzzle velocity of assault rifles bullets!

How to think of intercepting or dodging from that?

Russia’s military-industrial complex has shortened the timeframe for the introduction of the hypersonic missile by four years, moving the mass production of Zircon rockets from 2022 to 2018, TASS reports, citing a source in the industry.

“We plan to complete official tests in 2017 and start serial production a year later,” the source said.

In February 2015 it was reported that a special fuel formula that allows hypersonic aerial vehicles to fly five times faster than the speed of sound had been developed in Russia, Sputnik cited the deputy defense minister, Army General Dmitry Bulgakov, as saying.

The highly secretive new missile is expected to be able to fly at least five to six times faster than the speed of sound, which is over 6,125 km/h, making it practically impossible to intercept.

With a rumored range of at least 400km (1,000km, according to other reports), the new missile will be able to find its target in a matter of minutes, making it impossible for a naval vessel to escape its reach, which is a common problem with modern subsonic anti-ship cruise missiles.

It was reported in February that the Russian Navy’s nuclear-powered guided-missile cruiser Pyotr Velikiy (Peter the Great, Project 11442) would be armed with hypersonic cruise missiles by 2022.

Another vessel of project 11442, the nuclear-powered guided-missile cruiser Admiral Nakhimov, has been undergoing a general overhaul since late 2014 and will be completely refurbished and rearmed with brand-new Zircon and Kalibr NK missile systems.

Zircon missiles will reportedly also be mounted on the newest fifth-generation nuclear-powered Husky class submarines, currently in development.

Russia is also actively developing other hypersonic systems, such as BrahMos II, a short-range ramjet missile based on the P-800 Onyx. The joint Russian-Indian project BrahMos is currently producing missile which travels at speeds of Mach 2.8 to 3 (or up to three times the speed of sound), widely believed to be the world's fastest anti-ship cruise missile in operation.

First trials of a sea-based Zircon hypersonic cruise missile have begun, a top defense industry source told RIA Novosti. The secretive missile is said to be capable of flying five to six times the speed of sound. It is launched from a 5G submarine.

“Zircon hypersonic missiles are already there, and testing from a ground-based launching site has begun,” a senior defense industry source told RIA Novosti on Thursday.

The new, highly secretive missile would be able to fly five to six times faster than the speed of sound, the source added.

Zircon missiles would be mounted on the newest fifth-generation nuclear-powered Husky-class submarines.

Features of the new hypersonic missile are not found in public sources. Earlier in February, it was revealed that the Russian Navy’s nuclear-powered guided-missile cruiser Pyotr Velikiy (Peter the Great) would also be armed with hypersonic cruise missiles by 2022.

A military source told TASS the cruiser will be refitted with the brand new multirole 3S-14 vertical launch systems, which house three types of anti-ship missiles, including Zircon, Onyx and Kalibr.

Zircon will probably replace P-800 Onyx and Kalibr NK missiles. Both have supersonic anti-ship capabilities, while Kalibr can cover long-range distances of up to 4,000 kilometers and carry a 500kg warhead. The combat-proven cruise missile was seen in action last year, when it was deployed against Islamic State’s (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) defenses in Syria.

Russia is also actively developing other hypersonic systems, such as BrahMos, a short-range ramjet missile based on the P-800 Onyx. A joint Russian-Indian project, BrahMos is a portmanteau formed from the names of two rivers, the Brahmaputra and the Moskva. Traveling at speeds of Mach 2.8 to 3, it’s widely believed to be the world's fastest anti-ship cruise missile in operation.

Hypersonic weapons are missiles and aircraft capable of reaching speeds of Mach 5 and more – or five times the speed of sound. They are extremely difficult to intercept due to their overwhelming speed and maneuvering capabilities. Hypersonic technologies in general, used in weapons systems and prospective aircraft, were seen by experts as a game changer in future warfare.

Slower bullets chasing up to hit the 2X faster bullets ah? No chance lah.

I was admiring a 3~4 years old boy at food court chasing up birds that were eating from the unoccupied tables' leftover. He tried to increase his speed, but could never beat the birds.

At 2X the speed of assault rifle bullet, the missile has very strong kinetic energy. It can destroy a warship even without an explosive warhead. Missile itself is few hundred kg, with rocket engine, remaining unfinished rocket propellant fuel, guidance & communication electronics. It is a very HUGE and heavy extra fast Bullet itself. Impacting the middle of a warship at 5~6X speed of sound @ few hundred kg can break the ship into two parts, much like a torpedo blast.

Isnt that what a rail gun is already capable of? Just a pc of forged steel less than 5kg can bring down a plane, punch thru hardened hull or tanks one end to the other.

Russia should share this with friend China against USA, Japan and Singapore. Should mass produce 100,000 of these missiles to protect Chinese sovereignty especially around the Diaoyu Islands and South China Sea.

5kg projectile carries very small energy compared with few hundred kg missile.

Rail gun projectile at muzzle (max) velocity is 2520 m/s, but it rapidly lose speed along the trajectory after leaving the rail. when it reached target say 15km away could fall to 1000m/s

max case for zero distance trajectory - target at point blank energy:

5X2520X2520/2 = 15,876,000 J

at 1000m/s energy:

5x1000x1000/2= 2,500,000 J

Missiles gains speed along trajectory as long as there is fuel, speed starts low at beginning and pickup speed on the way by burning fuel. Weight decrease along the way as fuel spent. Usually at max speed before impact on target. Predecessor of Zicon is Brahmos which is 3000kg at launching. After near max range the fuel near finished it is still at least 500kg, with speed MACH 5~6 MACH 1=340m/s

Kinetic Energy at 500kg @ MACH 6 speed:

500X(6x340)x(6x340)/2= 1,040,400,000 J

The kinetic energy of Zicon missile impact compared with rail gun is 400X to 65X

Certainly, for anti-ship missile it will carry a warhead of typically 200kg included in the 500kg calculation (estimating 300kg of rocket engine, remaining fuel and missile shell etc), the 200kg assuming be TNT @ 5 MJ/kg will be 1GJ blasting power. If 200kg warhead was C4 explosive then approx 6MJ/kg reaching 1.2GJ blasting power.

The 5kg rail gun projectile is a magnetic solid without any explosive. Kinetic energy is all it has.

The destructive power of rail gun on the ship hit by Zicon missile is 2GJ to 2.2GJ, and by rail gun is only 2.5MJ to 15.8MJ.

Lots of difference.

In the extreme case the Zicon missile carries a tactical nuke warhead to kill aircraft carrier, then the energy level is huge in TJ or PJ level.

im sorry currently the youtube video i saw of amerca's "rail gun" is still in developmental phase and is only capable of punching thru pieces of wood, let alone hardened steel or titanium.

furthermore rail gun just like ship cannons are outdated ancient 1800s pirates of the carribean technology.in order to aim a gun u need direct line of sight, and the gun can only aim out to 5 or 10km before the surface of the earth dips below the horizon since the earth is not flat.missiles can be directed across any complicated flight paths, can have their height, velocity, angle of attack adjusted anytime and have range of hundreds of km.

thirdly what is a 10 inch or 20 inch projectile going to do?make a nice little hole in ur football field size battleship or submarine?can it break the back of a ship like a torpedo and make it warp from the force of the explosion?
