Despite NATO’s intense military buildup in Eastern Europe, the largest since World War II, US officials warn that, in the event of an invasion, alliance forces could be overwhelmed by Russia in less than three days.
The ongoing military buildup along*Russia’s borders has been criticized as*an unnecessary provocation that threatens to*destabilize the region.

Why the Europeans Have Signed Up for the US's 'Insane March on Russia'
"There has never been such an amassing of*hostile military force on*Russia’s Western frontiers since*June 1941 when Hitler invaded the Soviet Union and that’s the way the Russians see it," Professor Stephen F. Cohen said in*a recent interview with*The John Batchelor Show.

But despite*this strong military presence, the US Deputy assistant secretary of*defense for*Russia, Ukraine, and Eurasia, Michael Carpenter, suggests that it’s still not enough.

During a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing earlier this week, Senator Cory Gardner (R-CO) asked Carpenter about*a report from*the RAND Corporation think tank declaring concerns that Russian forces could overtake NATO in*just 60 hours.

NATO is Possibly About to Make ‘One of the Biggest Mistakes in Its History’
According to*Carpenter, the recent buildup has not alleviated those fears.

"By the end of*2017, when we implement all of*the ERI [European Reassurance Initiative] funding that is coming online, that we will be much better poised to*address the challenges and much better poised to*deter Russian aggression in*that region than*we are now," he said.

"I don’t know that we’re significantly more advanced now than*when the RAND report came out, but*I am confident by*the end of*2017, when we have an additional armored brigade combat team worth of*force posture on*the eastern flank of*the alliance, that we will be."

Carpenter’s warning comes as*NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg seeks greater defense spending for*the military alliance.

'NATO is No Threat to Russia': Ex-Alliance Chief Told Sputnik Military Buildup Near Russia Regrettable But Necessary
"Tensions are going up, we are living in*a more dangerous world, we see a more assertive Russia to*the east and we see all the turmoil and the violence to*the south," he said during*a Thursday press conference.

"It’s ok to*reduce [spending] when tensions are going down*as long as*we’re able to*increase defense spending when tensions are going up, and that’s what I expect NATO allies to*do."

NATO has repeatedly called on*its members to*spend a minimum of*2% of*their GDP on*defense.

The alliance has been reinforcing its military presence in*Europe, particularly in*Eastern European states, since*the outbreak of*the Ukrainian instability, citing Russia's alleged interference in*that conflict as*justification for*the move. The US Secretary of Defense’s deputy assistant said that Russia could potentially overpower NATO forces in the Baltics in 60 hours, adding that with its greater budget the chances of deterring such “Russian aggression” is set to significantly increase in 2017.

Capitals of the Baltic states are presently vulnerable should Russians decide to conquer them, but after 2017 the threat would decline thanks to recently-approved US defense expenditures, believes Michael Carpenter, deputy assistant secretary of defense for Russia, Ukraine, and Eurasia.

“I don’t know that we’re significantly more advanced now than when the RAND Corporation report*came out,” Carpenter told Senate’s Foreign Relations Committee. “But I’m confident by the end of 2017, when we have an additional armored brigade combat team worth of force posture on the eastern flank of the alliance, that we will be,” he assured.

The report*of the RAND Corporation, partly funded by the US Department of Defense, published in early February, maintained that NATO “cannot successfully defend the territory of its most exposed members,” urging the deployment of nothing less than seven brigades to the Baltics to protect Tallinn and Riga from potentially being overrun in less than “60 hours.”

The report came as the Pentagon announced plans to quadruple*its spending in Europe in 2017.

“Russia clearly possesses a time-distance advantage, if it were to decide to be an aggressor in the Baltic states,” Carpenter said. “We are making the investments … to have forces prepositioned, along with more fighting equipment, so that we are better able to deter Russian aggression in the first place.”

‘Absurd’: Russian envoy to NATO ridicules allegations of plans to invade Poland
Ahead of the NATO summit set to take place in Warsaw in July, Poland is hosting unprecedented war games*on its territory, which began on Monday. Over 31,000 troops from 24 countries are taking part in NATO’s Anaconda 2016 war drills in Poland – the largest war games in Eastern Europe since the Cold War.

Lithuania is hosting*another NATO military exercise, the Iron Wolf 2016 war games, which are the largest this year. The exercise started on Monday and involves some heavy military hardware deployed for the occasion by visiting members of the alliance.

The West claims that the string of recent military drills is to assure eastern Europe of NATO’s full commitment to defending them against Russia. Meanwhile Moscow maintains it has no plans at all to interfere with any country in the region, and expressed concerns over the destabilizing and threatening NATO military build-up along the Russian borders.

Russia vs NATO: Putin’s military might could overrun NATO forces in 60 hours, defense official warns
JUNE 10, 201611:21AM

The biggest military exercise since the end of the Cold War

Debra Killalea and wiresnews.com.au
RUSSIA could steamroll NATO forces in just 60 hours, a leading US defence official has warned amid rising tensions with the west.

The alarming claim comes as Russia has deployed troops westward as part of its ongoing stand-off with NATO.

US Deputy assistant secretary of defence for Russia, Ukraine, and Eurasia Michael Carpenter

told a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing that the West and NATO were currently not ideally prepared to deal with a Russian threat.

He said Russia had a massive geographical and time advantage but by 2017 the US would be in a better position to defend its allies.

The warning over increasing Russian aggression comes just four months after non-profit global policy think tank RAND raised “concerns about its larger intentions” and speculated Russian forces could reach those areas in 60 hours.

It warned NATO cannot successfully defend the territory of its most exposed members, the Baltic republics of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.

It did however suggest it was possible to avoid a rapid overrun of the Baltic States with a force of seven brigades.

This would include three heavy armoured brigades backed by airpower along with land-based support.

Senator Cory Gardner asked Mr Carpenter if the RAND warning made last February was still accurate and if NATO is prepared to deal with the threat.

“I’m confident by the end of 2017, when we have an additional armoured brigade combat team worth of force posture on the eastern flank of the alliance, that we will be,” he said.

TENSIONS RISE

NATO is taking part in a war games exercise in Poland intended to shore up security on the alliance’s eastern flank.

The 10-day exercises come as member states have been spooked by Russia’s increasingly assertive actions.

Nineteen NATO member nations and five partner nations are contributing troops to the exercise that will train and test their swift joint reaction to threats on land, sea and in the air.

The exercises are certain to increase tensions between the two sides with Russia deploying its troops westward, Reuters reported.

The move is part of an increasing military build up in the region with Russia also building an army base near its border with Ukraine.

Russia is continuing to build up its forces along its western frontiers while NATO conducts its exercises on the east.

The coalition’s head of the exercise, US Lt Gen Benjamin Hodges, said the exercise represented the commitment of the participating countries to “stability and security in Europe.”

“We want as many to see what we are doing as possible so that they won’t be nervous,” he said.

Russia considers the presence of NATO troops close to its border as a security threat.

President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, said earlier this week that the military exercise in Poland “does not contribute to the atmosphere of trust and security on the continent.”

Poland and other nations in the region, as well as NATO leaders, argue that any military presence or exercises are purely defensive and deterrent measures.

The drill is being held just weeks before NATO holds a crucial summit in Warsaw expected to decide that significant numbers of NATO troops and equipment will be based in Poland and in the Baltic States.

Created in 1949, the US-led NATO alliance is considered to be a way of countering the military might of the Soviet Union, and preventing the rebirth of the militant nationalism that had led to Europe’s two world wars.

‘END THREATS’

The warning comes as it emerged Russia is working on setting up a joint air defence system with all of its ex-Soviet military allies.

“The merger of regional air defence systems will pave the way for creating a common air defence (system) over the entire territory of the Collective Security Treaty Organisation,” Nikolai Bordyuzha, the head of the Russia-led alliance of six countries, told a press conference in the Armenian capital Yerevan.

CSTO, which is largely regarded as Russia’s answer to NATO, includes Russia, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan.

Moscow has a joint air defence system in place with Belarus and Kazakhstan, and the agreement to create one with Armenia “is being considered for ratification” by the two countries’ parliaments, Mr Bordyuzha said.

Moscow has stepped up military co-operation with its CSTO allies since becoming embroiled in its worst standoff with the West since the Cold War over its 2014 annexation of the Crimea peninsula from Ukraine and the subsequent start of a pro-Russian uprising in Ukraine’s east.

Russia has accused NATO of expanding its military reach close to its borders.

In May, Russian President Vladimir Putin warned Washington that Moscow will consider measures to “end threats” from NATO’s antimissile systems in Europe that are based essentially on US technology.

The Western military bloc’s missile shield includes the progressive deployment of missile interceptors and powerful radar in eastern Europe and Turkey.

NATO and the United States said this spring that they will switch their defence doctrine from assurance to deterrence in eastern Europe in response to a “resurgent and aggressive Russia”.

Russia could overrun Eastern Europe in THREE DAYS because NATO has been caught napping by Putin and would be hopelessly outgunned, according to US military predictions

Think tank of army and civilian officials fear US and allies would be overrun
Research suggests NATO has been caught napping by a resurgent Russia
Russia could take the Baltic States in just 36-60 hours by launching two-pronged attack on Latvia then Estonia, according to series of war games
NATO would have to rush to protect Riga and Tallinn, the capitals, but they do not have enough heavy armor in their ground forces to rival Putin's fleet
All 27 of Russia's battalions have battle tanks; NATO's 12 have none
Russia could overrun Eastern Europe in just three days because NATO has not been bolstering its fleet since Vladimir Putin took Crimea, according to US military predictions.

Testing every possible scenario in a series of war games, a US military think tank has concluded it would take a resurgent Russia between 36 and 60 hours to push its 27 heavily-armored battalions past NATO's lightweight 12 to occupy the Baltic States.

Most likely, the study found, Russia would start by launching a two-pronged attack across the Latvian border, sending heavily-armed battalions in from the north and the south.*

These battalions would push past the light-weight Latvian and NATO battalions before uniting to take the capital of Riga.

Once secured, the remaining part of Russia's 27 maneuver battalions would cross the Narva reservoir into Estonia to take the ethnic Russian north-east before heading to Tallinn, the capital.

NATO's only hope would be to concentrate its forces in Tallinn and Riga while stationing some delays along the main routes. But eventually, the West 'would have to launched a belated nuclear attack'.*

'The outcome was, bluntly, a disaster for NATO,' the report*concludes.*

This is a map of how a US military think tank believes Russia could overrun NATO to take the Baltic States in just 36-60 hours. Even with a week's notice, NATO's 12-strong fleet would be no match against Putin's 27

NATO report claimed Russia's military drills have now reached levels 'unseen since the height of the Cold War'

RUSSIA'S FLEET*

27 maneuver battalions

Heavily-armored battle tanks in every battalion

Light-armored vehicles in 8 airborne fleets*

Troops stationed in Kalingrad Oblast, surrounding the Baltic States

NATO'S FLEET*

12 battalions - 7 of which are the domestic fleets of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia

No main battle tanks

Only one, a single Stryker battalion, has heavy armor

NATO has adequate airpower but this would be futile with weak ground forces*

The report warns, NATO's ground forces are no match for Russia's. They do not have any battle tanks; all of Russia's do. And NATO would have little room for maneuver, annexed in by Russian forces in Kalingrad Oblast.

In the scenario given by the study, NATO would have one week's notice to defend Eastern Europe.

The study, carried out between 2014 and 2015,*suggested even a combination of US and Baltic troops combined with US airstrikes would not be able to prevent Russia advancing.

Seven of NATO's 12 battalions in Eastern Europe are domestic fleets of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. They only have one heavy armored fleet, a single Stryker battalion, and no main battle tanks, the report explains.*

Though NATO's air power could put up a strong defense, it would be futile as its lightweight ground forces would be plowed down by Russia's.*

'The games' findings are unambiguous: As currently postured, NATO cannot successfully defend the territory of its most exposed members,' the report said.

The U.S. is now reportedly turning to its ally Canada to help develop a new NATO force that can help defend eastern Europe against possible Russian aggression. This comes after one U.S. defense official admitted that NATO is not completely prepared to take on Russia. In fact, it’s possible for Russia to overrun NATO forces in a matter of 60 hours should it exercise aggressive actions in the Baltic region.

NATO is now having a hard time in rounding up the rotating force of 4,000 troops that would be stationed in NATO’s eastern flank in Poland and the Baltics. The buildup has been slow with the only Germany and Britain willing to contribute 1,000 troops each while the United States committed to providing a third of the necessary forces. That means, NATO badly needs another country to supply the rest of the required forces.

A senior NATO diplomat has told Reuters that the rest of the NATO allies in Europe just don’t have the resources to contribute to this rotating force. “They’re thinly stretched, at home, in Africa, in Afghanistan. They just don’t have the money,” the NATO source says. With Russia ramping up its aggression despite saying that it has no plans to invade a NATO ally, it is necessary to complete the force as soon as possible. This is especially true when one U.S. defense official is saying its current force is not enough to hold off an all-out Russian advance.

According to a report from Mail Online, Michael Carpenter, Pentagon’s Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense with responsibility for Russia, Ukraine, and Eurasia, the NATO alliance is currently not ready for anything Russia might have up its sleeve. He also admitted that an earlier RAND report about NATO’s eastern flank and Russian deterrence is accurate.
Like us on Facebook

The said report has determined that it will take Russian forces around 60 hours in order to invade the outskirts of Estonia and/or Latvia, leading to a “rapid defeat.” Moreover, the research also found that with its current set-up, “NATO cannot successfully defend the territory of its most exposed members.”

Today, NATO defense ministers are expected to meet next week in order to formalize the plan with regard to the four battalions that will be deployed in the critical eastern flank. Britain is expected to deploy its forces to Estonia while the U.S. will station its troops in Latvia. Meanwhile, German forces will be deployed to Lithuania.

It remains to be seen if Canada will say yes and deploy its forces to Poland.

Common tactic for united shit to sound the alarm with the intention of making it allies depend on USA even more and secondly sell more arms.

The only thing NATO fears about Russia is it nuclear arms and not conventional force
