Canada kicks Brazil's butt in soccer game!

It may be the women's team, but soccer is a religion in Brazil, and beating them in a game of soccer is a God-given honour and privilege. Doesn.t matter if it was the men's team or women's team. Soccer is Brazil's game, just as Ice-hockey is Canada's game. Must've been a glorious time for the Canadian side, especially for her little girls who are more fervent about soccer than their school subjects! Go for it Canucks!

Cheers!

It was one goal, just one goal — it didn’t win them a championship or anything shiny like a medal, but it meant the world to the Canadian women’s soccer team.
A 1-0 win over Brazil in an international friendly Tuesday night at TD Place — with Janine Beckie scoring in the final seconds of stoppage time — was big. Huge. Let’s face it, nils won’t take the defending Olympic bronze medallists very far at the Rio Olympics in two months.
Dramatic? Yes. In a very good way. And it was certainly a well-deserved win on home-country turf along the Road to Rio.
On the heels of a shaky 2-0 loss to the Brazilian side Saturday in Toronto, the Canadians were flying on Tuesday.
“We scored two goals against Brazil in the Algarve Cup (a 2-1 win in March),” said Canadian coach John Herdman. “In the game in Toronto, it looked like we weren’t going to hit the back of the net — no matter how long we tried. Tonight, it sort of felt like that again. We drilled that in in the pre-game meeting. These kids, these fans, they deserved something. That was the resilience, it was a mantra within the group … ‘Whatever it takes.’ You know, ‘Let’s keep pushing until that goals come’ … and they did.

“At some stage, you’d want that to be two or three (goals). That’s the dream for us — to put away a tier one team by two goals, three goals. Our current reality is the games are going to be tight, we’re going to have to fight and grit it out and hopefully, the quality comes through.”
Keep in perspective that Brazil, ranked eighth in the world, had just five starters — Barbara, Rafaelle, Andressa Alves, Thaisa and Cristiane — on the pitch to start against the 10th-ranked Canadians. Among those on the bench: Marta, world player of the year for five straight years (between 2006-10). She subbed in during the 70th minute.
But still, Canada controlled the pace of play, with several exciting runs down the pitch, and had the better scoring opportunities in front of a supportive crowd of 23,568.

Canada came close near the eighth minute with a shot sliding just wide of the left post. Then, in the 17th minute, Kadeisha Buchanan found herself alone and chipped the ball over the bar from in close.
With luck working against them, the Canadians failed to convert a great opportunity early in the 24th minute. A rebound off Deanne Rose’s shot slid to Diana Matheson, who couldn’t get the ball past Barbara (yep, get used to the one-name players).
Matheson had a brilliant opportunity 10 minutes into the second half, trying to chip the ball past the Brazilian goaltender who was racing out to try and knock it away. But the attempt dribbled just wide. Beckie raced in alone with a couple of minutes left, but couldn’t push the ball past the Brazilian keeper. On the final play before the ref blew his whistle, Beckie would make up for that with a brilliant chip shot over the head of Luciana, who had subbed in for the starting keeper.
With Canada beginning its training camp in Vancouver on July 1, the eyes are on the prize. It’s a young squad, with key veterans sprinkled in, and Herdman likes the enthusiasm.
“We’re living off the back of 2012 (a bronze medal at the London Olympics), the goal is to try and push (for) the podium again,” he said. “We’ll give it our best. Everything we’ve been pushing is around individual personal bests to try and deliver a team personal best — which will be to jump on that podium and see the flag rise again.”
“We expected a hard game, a difficult game,” said Brazilian coach Oswaldo Alvarez through a translator. “We chose not to put some players in. I have no regrets. We wanted to see the others. Canada was better than Brazil tonight.”
