Chitchat The gradual Islamization of malaysia

Not sure the thread title is the correct way to express what's happening. The Constitution of Malaysia guarantees freedom of worship and also makes Malaysia a secular nation in principle, even as it upholds Islam as the "religion of the Federation". And that was how society in Malaysia functioned, until recent years when the wave of radicalization reached its shores.

Political parties in malaysia, both the government as well as opposition side, have always used Islam as a tool. Talk about Hudud law has gone far back, way before I can remember, but never has it become an issue that the wider population need be concerned about. Now, PAS is pushing Hudud law with renewed aggression, further fragmentation an opposition that has already been wrecked by differences. (More on this below.)

There are distinct developments over the years that raised my eyebrows. First was self-appointed religious police who took law into their own hands. Their existence only became widely known to the region when their abuses were reported by the mainstream media and carried by international press.

Next, more recently, are the various cases of govt and quasi govt departments imposing onerous dress code requirements on both men and women. Auntie wearing knee-length dress was told to put on an additional layer before she could be allowed into a govt building. Here, the constitution here is clear that this space is secular and islamic codes of dress don't apply to non-Muslims. There have been many such instances. Who is giving govt officials the audacity to impose Islamic codes onto a secular space?

The Kelantan state legislative assembly has passed amendments to the Shariah Criminal Code that effectively pave the way for future implementing of Hudud Law. That is not the only thing PAS has done to Kelantan. The PAS has also in the past placed tough restrictions or outright bans on the performance of traditional Malay theatrical forms, as well as public performances by women.

And just last week, the Malaysian government had proceeded to fast-track a Private Member’s Bill brought forth by PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang. The Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) (Amendment) Bill 2016 in particular addresses the scope and form of punishments Syariah Courts can mete out and is seen by govt critics as well as other BN components as a step toward Hudud Law.

So here we have a Prime Minister making a politically unpopular move and acting in concert not with a member of his party but with a component member of the opposition. That's the part I don't get.

The gradual Islamization of Malaysia (if its appropriate to be termed thusly) is a national security threat and must be taken seriously. If this trend continues to deepen, which i suspect it will, it will become a tinderbox that can have grave implications on our own security.

The Malaysian Government from the onset has made sure that Islam is not hijacked for political reasons. Even as recently as Mahathir's tenure, he was very harsh on deviants and those who sought to use Islam to further the political agenda. However with the emergence of PAS, things are more difficult. UMNO began resorting to the Malay identity and culture as the rallying cry and even going to the extent of flashing the Keris .

Enter the next phase of Malaysian politics when DAP and PAS becomes bedfellows in politics, something no one would have imagined sometime back. Its like JBJ and Old Man playing snooker and then going for a beer. Fast forward to PAS tabling of a private bill to introduce Hudud laws in Kelantan and DAP's silence. To add to this explosive situation, Najib who is fighting for his political survival over 1MDB and without consulting his cabinet endorses the bill to be seen as more Islamic than PAS.

The saving grace is MCA's President courageous act of threatening to quit his cabinet post if the bill is passed. This is unprecedented. This was followed quickly by Barisan's component parties issuing the same threat to Najib and Umno.

The relief from the Malay quarters appear to come the Council of Rulers and the independent actions of the Royalty. As the formal custodian of Islam for the respective states, they know enough to separate religion and politics. And they do have a political agenda to pursue as they tenured for life so to speak. They are also not happy their powers as custodian of Islam has been usurped by PAS. It was no surprise that the Sultan of Johor went on the offensive recently when Govt agencies began acting on their own initiative to be more muslim than PAS.

This does not mean the day is saved and the Islamisation of Malaysia has been stopped. Even if the law is not passed, all signals indicate that the creep will continue under Najib

If Malaysia moves from a secular state to an Islamic State, Singapore will benefit in the short term by drawing talents from Malaysia from the minority race and even liberal Malay-Muslims as en exodus is is expected. We may even be an envious position to pick and chose similar to 1974 when Malaysia introduced Bahasa as the language of education which led to then exodus of some proportion. However in the long run, it will be Barbarians at the Gates scenario with Singapore being the proverbial bogeyman and the future will look rather bleak.

This is why religion is a cancer to humanity and free society.

Malaysia has Muslim majority and any politicians looking to get into power through the votes need to woo them and play favour.

Just like USA where it is suppose to be a secular country but you can't get into the white house unless you are a Christian cos the majority who vote in US are Christians.

Islam is the State Religion but it remains secular. Occasionally Malaysian politicians throw out comments to appease people during elections. Here is a story of Mahathir that I have told before.

Two trainee Malaysian police helicopter pilots returned to the camp after the usual weekend off in Islamic grab. They told their instructor that they are Muslims and will only wear the religious garb for training and then operational duties. This was escalated up the chain as no one seem to know what to do. That very day it reached Mahathir's desk. Apparently someone in the Police leadership hierarchy knew what he was. Mahathir told them to throw both the trainees and their belongings out of the camp and remove them from the Police payroll. It was immediately done. Both trainees broke down and cried and pleaded for mercy and promised to follow the regulations to no avail. As news spread, the people who were sporting beard suddenly shaved.

It was Mahathir who declared Malaysia is a Muslim country.

Najib is playing a dangerous game. He played the race card in the previous general elections and also Red versus Yellow clash. The direction the country is going under him is disconcerting to say the least. Mahathir had better sense even though he made chauvinist remarks and his blog chedet.cc has previously expressed views of a particular slant. It's good that he's onto Najib's corruption.

Najib is deviating from the course set by past administrations of keeping Malaysia on the sane path of secularism.

Irony of dual legal system (Shariah courts and judiciary), can cut both ways.
All this dumb political wayang by Umno is only stoking ethinic tensions

http://edition.cnn.com/2016/05/31/asia/malaysia-hudud-bill/index.html

Extract:
Those advocating hudud law in Malaysia argue it will be applicable only to Muslims and not affect non-Muslims.
However, Chandra Muzaffar, the president of non-governmental organisation, The
International Movement of a Just World,
says the implementation of hudud will create an unjust dual legal system.
"If you commit a wrongdoing, your punishment cannot be different
from another person. You have to be fair. If two people people commit robbery, one gets his hand chopped off and the other doesn't, it isn't right," he said.

He cited a hypothetical example of a Muslim man caught for raping a non-Muslim woman.
"Under hudud, the authorities will need to be presented with four male Muslim witnesses and the rapist can argue that he be set free if they are even short of one.
Can you imagine the reality that the non-Muslim victim has to face even if the rape can be proved through DNA testing?" he explained.

It was Mahathir who declared Malaysia is a Muslim country.
It was dr m that gave more powers to islamic courts. Previously, it was for family matters only, like marriage, divorce, inheritance.
Now, malays can be whipped, fined and jailed if caught drinking and fornicating.

The Islamization of Malaysia is the natural outcome of the rise of outward religious piety of Muslims. In the past, most muslim women do not wear tudung. Now, it is hard to find a muslim woman who doesn't. Most muslims silently support sharia because they believe that under sharia, they will enjoy better legal rights and perks as they are muslims. Of course, if their economy goes downhill, they can always blame it on the jews, christians and chinese as they usually do.

Currently some married couples are having problems with the muslim religious police. When husband & wife travel they are sometimes asked to show proof that they are married.

How many couples travel with their marriage certificates?

I remember one case in particular where a the women was married to an angmo & he got into trouble because the religious police suspected the husband of committing khalwat with his wife:biggrin:

PETALING JAYA: A Universiti Malaya lecturer got into a war of words with security personnel this morning after she was barred from entering the Palace of Justice since the dress she was wearing failed to conceal her knees.

Despite a poster prohibiting women with short skirts or dresses from entering the premises clearly displayed nearby, the woman, who did not reveal her name, was annoyed at being stopped by the auxiliary policeman and argued that the dress code at government buildings was inconsistent, The Rakyat Post reported.

However, since the policeman refused to back down, the woman was left with no choice but to tie a scarf around her waist and over the white dress she had on in order to be allowed inside.

She was there with Teratai assemblyperson Tiew Way Keng, who said that in her opinion, the lecturer was appropriately dressed. Tiew also said that she would send a letter of complaint to the ministry over the embarrassing incident.

The lecturer was there in support of her colleague, law professor Azmi Sharom, who was in court to hear the court’s ruling in his case for challenging the constitutionality of the Sedition Act 1948.

The dress code has been an issue since of late with mainly women being targeted for wearing skirts and dresses considered inappropriate because it revealed their knees.

Besides two reporters who were forced to cover up before entering the Selangor State Secretariat building in June this year, a woman was made to don a sarong in order to receive service at the Road Transport Department while a young girl was denied entry into a hospital for wearing shorts. She was only allowed in when she borrowed a towel from a patient and covered herself up with it.

Wow profound! This is something I can agree. They always blame others esp. the Chinese for their own failings and call them pendatangs and to balik China. Haha how stupid and backward is their thinking! Even racist Dr M knows the importance of having Chinese to shore up their economy.
